The entire DLC library can be played in Rock Band 3, and 95% of the songs from the previous disc titles also export and are still playable in Rock Band 3. Even though DLC is over for RB1 and 2, that's still 2000+ DLC songs available.
Or did people expect Rock Band 1 to be supported into eternity?
Up until Rock Band defined it, everyone always assumed music game DLC was specific to that game and exporting the tracks into future versions 3 years later was unheard of.
DLC is done for RB1 and 2?
And yeah, they made it sound like if you bought RB1, you could play all the DLC through the end of this console generation. They almost made it sound like they weren't going to do yearly iterations, though I understand that'd be kinda ridiculous.
It would have been awesome if there was ONLY RB1, 2, and 3 and none of the other junk that's come out. Perhaps disc-only add-ins for stuff like Beatles (impossible, I know, but still) or band packs along with the single-track DLC that's been in steady release, but none of these ridiculous side-games.
It's nice that the DLC is downloadable (mostly) from the other discs, but it'd be nice if they made the tracks downloadable individually from the store too (do they? I haven't really looked myself, but as far as I was aware if it was on a disc it wasn't in the store).
I wish they would make a downloadable digital version of the game with no songs for like $5 or something, and then you can just pay for the DLC songs you buy. That would be cool.
They never actually said anything about DLC being issued forever for 1. All they ever said is that the songs would be playable and forward compatible in future titles, which they are.
There's also the fact that some artists will only release songs if they come on the disc and are not singles in the store (AC/DC).
And to be very honest, you wouldn't want to be using Rock Band 1 still, even if you bought every DLC track. The interface is crap and 2 and 3 blow the usability of 1 out of the water.
edit: there's also the fact that bands can still release DLC for 2 via Rock Band Network.
And to be very honest, you wouldn't want to be using Rock Band 1 still, even if you bought every DLC track. The interface is crap and 2 and 3 blow the usability of 1 out of the water.
I hear this a lot, and honestly, I haven't played them very long outside of parties, and outside of having to back all the way out to change instruments if you want to keep linked to your Live account and characters, I never had any issues with 1 and didn't really see much different in 2. I could find songs and play them just as easily in both.
But I'm sure if you play all the time you'd notice the advantages.
edit: I'm not saying it would be feasible, advisable, or financially responsible to do what I suggested, I'm just saying that to me, it would be a plus and incentive to buy the game.
Rock Band (2007)
Rock Band 2 (2008)
Rock Band Unplugged (2009)
The Beatles: Rock Band (2009)
Lego Rock Band (2009)
Green Day: Rock Band (2010)
Rock Band 3 (2010)
7 games in total
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (2007)
Guitar Hero World Tour (2008)
Guitar Hero 5 (2009)
Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock (2010)
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (2008)
Guitar Hero: Metallica (2009)
Guitar Hero Smash Hits (2009)
7 games, 8 if you include Band Hero.
Why does Activision get so much flak for "running guitar Hero into the ground" when Harmonix are just as much to blame. Activision also never nickel and dimed their customers with DLC either.
also claiming to boycott a company got old in 2008 when the people on this forum were frothing at the mouth at EA buying up the NFL license.
There should be a few more Guitar Heroes, right?
Guitar Hero: Van Halen (2009)
Guitar Hero On Tour (2008)
Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits (2008)
Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades (2009)
So that's 11 or 12. Although, I do get what you're saying.
Also, don't forget the phone games:
Guitar Hero Mobile (2008)
Guitar Hero 3 Backstage Pass (2008)
Guitar Hero World Tour Mobile (2008)
Guitar Hero 5 Mobile (2009)
It was really the 2008/2009 period that everyone rags on Guitar Hero for. In those two years, three GH games came out for DS, four came out for phones, and five (!) were released on consoles. That's a glut of product.
In that same two-year period, Rock Band released one PSP title, one mobile title, and three console titles. I think everyone agrees that they shouldn't have released Lego Rock Band; if they hadn't, then you would have just had RB2 and Beatles in those two years, which wouldn't have been bad at all.
Edit: I know the speculation is that it's been canned, but wasn't Guitar Hero: Megadeth supposed to be released this year as well?
You guys forgot Band Hero.
And the difference that you can play 99% (outside of the Beatles) of Rock Band DLC, RB1, RB2, Lego, and Green Day tracks all in the current iteration of the game.

For starters:
1: jumps back up to the top of the list every time you change the sort style
2: stays on the song you had highlighted
2: lets you quickly jump up and down the setlist by holding a button and moving from say A to S instead of scrolling all the way from A to S song by song
1: no quick jump
1: lots of DLC means it takes 5 seconds to move from song to song in career mode
2: doesn't happen
1: If you're playing with someone online, you have to manually scroll through all the greyed out songs on your setlist, taking about 2-3 seconds to get past each one as it attempts to load the preview.
Also, only the host can ever choose songs
2: You can at least jump past the greyed out songs using category jump and everyone chooses songs round robin style
3: everyone can make song selections at the same time
1: the only way to record scores in solo play is to go to Career, then slowly scroll down to the bottom of the career song list, then slowly scroll down your DLC list GH2-style
2: solo scores can be recorded solo in quickplay or career
3: solo scores can be recorded solo in quickplay or career and even in band mode now.
1: only the singer can be animated to sing in a song. Breaks Clint Eastwood because the drummer just stares at the camera.
2: everyone can move their mouth to sing in a song. Clint Eastwood makes it very apparent that the song was tuned for RB2 with this.
3: each band player can now animate their mouth individually
1: band sort, alpha sort, year sort, difficulty sort, maybe genre? only can see the band name and song name
2: all of the above, plus year/album art, genre sort, location sort, stars earned sort
3: all of the above, plus filters like length, family friendly, source game (RB1 and 2 consider all exports DLC, 2 only recognizes 1 as a seperate source), and all sorting options can be stacked (so you can do Long Songs, 70s, Metal for example)
1: characters were locked to a specific instrument
2: characters could play any instrument, but you could only modify the instrument they used if you were using that one
3: characters can play any instrument and you can modify all their possible instruments from any instrument
The last time I was forced to use RB1, I wanted to shiv myself.
tl;dr Some people's idea of what the Rock Band "platform" thing meant was completely out of touch of the realities of design evolution and song rights contracts and a 3 year old codebase for a console game. The fact of the matter is, if Guitar Hero had even close to the same support, we'd still be able to buy new tracks for GH3 up until a week ago as packs or singles, and all of 3's tracks would be usable in GHWT, GH5, WoR, and Band Hero.
I wonder how RB3 will do. When I ask around my usual circle of friends, most of them are expecting ME to buy it. Previously, everyone was really excited and wanted a copy.
I like what HMX has done but if RB3 bombs this holiday season I don't see how it could go on.
Instead of converting dollars to yen; Nintendo should put their dollars into the Seattle Mariners and American game development. Both would make me happy.
Although the article I read had an analyst that made the loss in conversion sound like a paper loss. So maybe those dollars are sitting in a bank and Nintendo gets a huge profit some year in the future when the Yen isn't as strong.

I really hope it does well thanks to HRMs continued support, the inovation and pro modes in the game, and the fact it's gotten a perfect/nearly-perfect review score from everywhere (except IGNorant).
Tango Gameworks, the new studio headed up by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, has just been bought by Zenimax Media, the firm which also owns Oblivion developers Bethesda and Doom creators id.
Mikami, whose last project was the just-released Vanquish, will remain in Tokyo with his team, where he will stay on as the head of the studio and take the role of creative lead on "all future projects". Tango's games will be published by Bethesda Softworks, whose most recent title was Fallout: New Vegas
Seems like a strange fit, but in this day and age - when Dead or Alive's creator is making games for THQ and Konami has Spaniards make a Castlevania game - anything's possible.
From Kotaku
Mikami burns through yet another development group and will now have his games published by Bethesda.

I suspect it will do decent (better than any recent Guitar Hero), but not as good as say, Rock Band 2 thanks to interest in the genre dying down.

Could this be a reason for the 3DS delay? Take a hit on holiday sales, then sell the 3DS in 2011 when the economy has realigned.

Still disappointed that they aren't just release Super Mario All-Stars on the VC for say $15 since I don't really care about the extras included with the game, but at least it's discounted somewhat from a regularly priced Wii game.

I imagine that even with the earlier released devkits, the 3ds will still be a wasteland of good games until fall 2011 at the earliest

More units from the factories; more games ready for launch or ready for release soon after launch; belief that it will sale all units regardless of when it is released.
Also, gives them one last holiday for the DS and allows them to concentrate on Wii marketing for the holidays. I'm sure there are lots of other possible reasons but it comes down to the fact that the 3DS will sale* out no matter what month it is released.
* Unless the price point is crazy of course.

Yeah they don't really *need* to sell 3DS during the holidays. It will likely do well regardless of when it comes out.
This gives them a chance to ensure stock is there - I don't think they want a repeat of the problems Wii had (not that the scarcity hurt the Wii, but I imagine Nintendo would have liked to sell that many more Wiis to people that first year). I kind of suspect some components like those fancy screens may take longer to produce which slows things down.
On the issue of support Activision: Have you guys ever heard of social choice theory? The aggregation of individual decisions absolutely matters. Support of any kind - even to Blizzard- is still support. The aggregated "vote" of each individual is a dichotomous variable. Either you support A-B or your do not. From the view of the corporate monolith, there is no third alternative.
More like downgraded graphics on the SNES version.
Do what?
Are the graphics on the Wii collection downgraded from the SNES compilation?
No, it's a basic port of the SNES collection.
Not sure what he was talking about.
It's XoB, he likes to hold unpopular opinions.
I'll probably buy the disk version of SMB All-Stars since it's not highway robbery or anything, but I would have preferred a Wii VC version instead, for the reduction in price & the convenience of having it on the Wii at all times.
The Super Mario games of the NES era were flawless classics and they were not particularly in need of remakes. At the very least, the deserved better than the treatment they got on the SNES. The new aesthetics are awful, particularly in the original Super Mario - the color palette is hideous and many of the graphic changes, such as giant Mario pictures in the coin rooms and World 6-3 being in color instead of black and white, are moronic.

Some people are looking at it sort of the opposite way: it's probably guaranteed that this disc will work on the Wii's successor, while download transfers may be a hassle.
So, bearing in mind that we're the #1 game store in my district, our buyer ordered 4 Kinects and 12 Kinect/360 bundles for the launch. But, hey! 16 fucking Tony Hawk Shred bundles for the Wii!!!
Microsoft is just treating this like a new launch. :P

The way my mind works, I'm quite happy it's getting a disc release. I still like my physical media.
Plus the extras and such make it a much better deal than you would find getting All-Stars on Ebay and the like.

True, but that's still probably a ways off. Given Microsoft & Sony's attempts to extend the generation and Nintendo probably being focused on the portables in the immediate future, I don't really see a Wii 2 for many years.
And to be honest, even if the Wii successor is awesome in theory, I'm definitely going to adopt a wait and see approach to it to see if the 3rd party situation looks any better than what the Wii ended up with.
I won't...but that's mostly because I own Nintendo consoles primarily for their first party stuff. :P
Yeah, I used to feel that way, but this generation has been very disappointing to me as far as first party Nintendo games, with new games feeling like same-old/same-old (Mario & Zelda), a step-back (Metroid), or just not for me (Wii X). The new Kirby game sounds pretty awesome though so I'd like to give that a try sometime.
I wonder how RB3 will do. When I ask around my usual circle of friends, most of them are expecting ME to buy it. Previously, everyone was really excited and wanted a copy.

It is sad that interest is dying. If more people had Rock Band parties like I do it would still be blowing up the charts. I am still getting new people into it all the time. It seems like Rock Band 3 should do well enough to keep the franchise alive but honestly I don't think it will sell as well as it deserves.

It has surpassed my expectations to be honest...but then to be fair, I also skipped the last two generations of Nintendo consoles...so much of the 'same ol' that people complain about doesn't feel the same to me.
Universal Studios is working on more than just a Michael Jackson game, with word slipping out yesterday that an MMO based on mythical monster hunter Van Helsing is also in development.
Handling the game will be a partnership between SEE Virtual Worlds and Entropia Universe creators MindArk. There's not much else to tell at the moment, other than the fact some of the monsters featured will include the "Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, the Invisible Man, the Mummy and the Creature From the Black Lagoon."

Seriously. I just can't believe people keep throwing money developing mmos that are obviously going to fail.
Edit - MJ game is going to bomb terribly as well. Poor Universal needs to get their shit together.

I want to have a career as a video game / movie seer.
Show me your ideas. I can accurately predict whether or not it will be successful. Seriously. I can do a 500% better job than whoever the hell is approving this garbage. Guitar Hero X? Just stop. Splice? No. Nightmare on Elm Street remake? Go away.
And really, MMOs? There hasn't really been a successful MMO since WOW got its fangs into those who are at all interested in that kind of thing anymore. I think the genre needs to be completely ravamped, with a focus on the redundant time sinks.

I like what HMX has done but if RB3 bombs this holiday season I don't see how it could go on.
Ah, yeah I haven't played long enough to notice really. Cool to know now though.

God, finally. Took them long enough to announce this!
Still disappointed that they aren't just release Super Mario All-Stars on the VC for say $15 since I don't really care about the extras included with the game, but at least it's discounted somewhat from a regularly priced Wii game.

So don't buy it then :P The original titles are all available on VC, just not the updated graphical versions. Personally I'm buying it *only* for the extras.
The superior original versions costs 5+6+5+5 anyways, so it's nine dollars more for the SNES versions plus an artbook and a CD.
Thank you Sporky!
I am now one super happy camper.
Edit: and yes, I'm pretty much buying this for the extras, and as a self proclaimed Mario whore. :P

Damn, yall got me riled up on this.

Some people are looking at it sort of the opposite way: it's probably guaranteed that this disc will work on the Wii's successor, while download transfers may be a hassle.

Nintendo Q2 results.
Seriously. I just can't believe people keep throwing money developing mmos that are obviously going to fail.
Edit - MJ game is going to bomb terribly as well. Poor Universal needs to get their shit together.
