The worst offender though was Top Gun, the landing sequence was damn near impossible with a steady hand and a control pad, it was ludicriously bad trying to do it with the U-Force's flight yoke attachment.

I could never land in Top Gun anyway, no matter what controller I was using. Fuck that landing sequence. :P

Also, I had forgotten about Crystalis. That was another one of my favorites when I was younger, my grandmother and I played that one together. She also really liked Dr. Mario and was a fucking wizard at it, she'd put it on the hardest difficulty and keep beating the last level over and over and over and never lose. It was insane watching her Zen out to it.

edit: she also really liked Puzznic, though that one was a lot harder than Dr. Mario.

River City Ransom is my wife's favorite game.

Metal Storm was badass - I rented and beat it after I read the Nintendo Power article on it. [Ed: Don't know why I typed "bought" there.]

Free Dragon Warrior was the best free game, ever.

My brother and I used to rent a game called Sky Kids from time to time - anyone else ever heard of it? Kind of a co-op sidescrolling biplane game. We used to "accidentally" shoot each other, which resulted in us "deliberately" shooting each other, which resulted in us fighting, which resulted in us not getting to play the Nintendo for the rest of the day. We'd still rent it out again a couple weeks later.

Sky Kid is actually available on the Virtual Console if you're interested.

I was always intrigued by Faxanadu. Never got around to play it. Never beat Ikari Warriors 2 either.

Faxanadu is a neat game. Pretty difficult, mainly because the physics are awful. You fall way too fast coming down from a jump, and you increase in speed too slowly from a dead stop. If you ever let go of the d-pad for a second, you'll have to slowly slide up to top speed again.

But I love the textured look of their graphics:

    FaxanaduU_003.png

And I like how that pillar's shadow falls closer on the giant tree root than on the wall behind. They put some thought into it.

The enemies are creepy and it has some nice music, I recommend trying it out sometime.

I have to admit something. I never understood the hatred for Top Gun and its landing sequence. But that might be because my dad was the one who played that game, not me, and even though I would embaress him at pretty much any other game when I was 5, he could actually take on Top Gun. Ninja Gaide? He lost in the first or second level. Street Fighter? I would have to try to lose. Top Gun? Motherfucker made it to the FINAL LEVEL.

Granted, he never beat it, but considering from what I hear most people have never even seen the second level, I have to admit thats some impressive shit right there.

I love the NES so much. I have asked my wife for one of those newfangled top loading ones off of Amazon for Christmas. I mostly want it because I have never beaten SMB3.

My list is simple for favorite games:

Kid Icarus, River City Ransom, Tetris, Karnov, Golgo 13 (which blew my mind) and Journey to Silius. I also watched my neighbor's dad beat LoZ and Castlevania 2 and marveled at how he did it (FYI, found out later that he called the help line).

The worst games that I owned were Rambo, Bible Stories, and this game that I can never remember the name to. It was a blue cartridge. It was kind of a Narc knockoff except that there were like side scrolling boat or driving parts. It might be something like Agent 2012 or NARC 2050.

If you are blowing a cartridge in this day and age you are doing more harm than good.

90% alcohol + qtips will get the majority of carts. Spending $10 and 15 mins replacing the 72 pin connector is a good start also, do this before you clean any carts. Putting clean carts in and old and possibly busted connector is going to just create double work.

It's also just as easy to crack it open and bend the pins back to make them more springy. A quick examination ought to show most people what needs to be done. :) If you're brave enough to open it, you'll be able to get it fixed. There are tutorials online.

    Here's maybe a better guide:

I am too much of a purist for that. :P

Make sure you do your research if you go that route, some of them can't handle stuff like Castlevania 3, etc. due to being an imperfect re-creation. A real NES has some strange behavior that is really tough to duplicate correctly, and some games rely on that strange behavior.

Would a retro gaming thread fly in the face of the "no megathreads" edict?

I've seen them on a few other forums (sa, i think gaf has one but that place moves too fast for me), it can be days/weeks between posts but they seem somewhat popular.

Ask a mod. I think it would depend on whether it's a Nintendo thread, or a Genesis thread, or just anything from 8 or 16 bit era.

This is sort of a NES megathread I guess.

I'll be honest. I beat Zelda 1 (I think the cartridge is still gold! I'll have to check that out) but I NEVER EVER found the damn Red Ring. This was before Gamefaqs by the way. I had to beat it using the old "kid in the other class that beat the game" instead of a game guide.

Also, screw you Blaster Master. One day I will beat you.
