Aren't hellions only 75 each? 225 minerals for 3 hellions that demolish lines and lines of lings is definitely worth it!
Of course, this is all theorycraft. I've had this happen to me a couple times but I'm sure it was more of an accidental thing like "I'll just get a crapload of units" and hellions happened to be in there. If I made more roaches and less lings, it wouldn't have mattered as much.
Speedlings are my curse. I love them so much but they're really quite fragile.
I just finished this longish (20min) game of TvT on Shakuras. Both of us on three base. I'm going mass Viking for air control and Tank/Thor for ground (don't ask.) So, not a lot of action, so I fly over his base to discover a billion Marauders. Then it occurs to me that I only got shot at by like 3 Marines.
I plop down two more Starports and a Fusion Core. As the BC's are making, I scan the middle of the map. Money scan reveals he's taken the gold minerals and has his entire army there. I see a bunch of Vikings, Marauders, and Tanks. I fly my fleet of Vikings in and engage him. We wipe each other out, but he reinforced with 2 Vikings. His army moves towards me as the BC's finish.
2 BC's begin raining hot death on his army as I try and get my Thors to stay back (with no success). After completing panic mode, he stim runs in his remaining Marauders into my Tank line. They evaporate.
"If only TvT required skill"
Your opponent has left the game.
After the game, I messaged him. I only managed to save the end:

EDIT: 100 each. 300 minerals for 3. Not too shabby still.
Sorry, I don't play terran and don't know all the costs. So yeah, 300 minerals isn't too bad if you make it an early investment.

they are good for early poking and with blue flame they are amazing either on the front line or running into a mineral line during a fight. although zergs I've been facing know it's coming because well... it's probably not gonna be reapers and you have to do something... so ace spinecrawler placement 100% shuts it down.
still, have a poke and try to keep em alive for later, get the blue flame, destroy lings.
Do people really get mad when you don't gg? I played a game where I threw everything I had at this guy after 40 min of small skirmishes. He destroys my army, and continues on to my second expansion. After 40 min, I can't be bothered and quit. I knew I would lose, and I didn't want to drag it out.
After the game, he sends me a msg saying "Good sportsmanship :P".
What did he want me to do? Fall at his feet, heaping praises on him?

Seriously though, I don't gg and the people I play don't either. It's really not that big a deal because (1) we're not pros and (2) we're not getting paid/sponsored.
@Jars: I agree, even though I wish it weren't that way. Like at the beginning when people say "gl hf". It really doesn't mean anything after all you face is cheese and/or all-in for months.
1. Shakuras doesn't have any gold minerals.
2. I've seen people talk about how they see no 'gg' as a rage quit, especially if they cheese. I always 'gg' when I lose, to keep them from thinking they got to me and to remind me not to let them get to me (It doesn't work well sometimes). I really don't care if a person says glhf/gg or not, but I'd prefer that to be the limit of their conversation because people on b.net rarely have anything more interesting to add.

I don't either unless it's people I know. In the pro community where you will see your opponents again (if you're lucky) I think it's worth establishing a respectful and polite environment.
B.net is mos eisley, I'd rather cut somebody's arm off when I lose.

Just one my last game of the night. TvZ using the Hellion/Thor build. I'm really digging it so far. The best part is my money is staying really low due to the absurd cost and supply of double pumping Thors and pairs of Hellions.
Thors: not only great for battle, but keeps the economy rolling!

I always "glhf" and "gg" in every game. It's just who I am I guess. As for everyone else, YMMV.
I would like to keep a positive atmosphere when I play so I always glhf and gg, it just seems to nice compared to Halo where the only exchange is balls in your mouth or screaming into the mic.

I always GG when it was indeed a good game. If it was something fucking stupid like "lol voidrays" I don't gg, even if I win, because it's not a good game. It's a stupid game.

When winning, I often forget to reply to the gg. I'm usually not sure if they're still fighting at that point and don't see it until it's too late. But I glhf/gg whenever I remember.
I watched a few replays where I fought stalker/chargelot/colossi with roach/hydra.
Made me realize how much 2 infestors would help in those big late game battles.
I can think of only one zerg game I won in T2+ where I did not build any infestors (and I'd have to check the replay, because I probably had one in my main just kicking it as I was in T3 in that game). They are so tits up awesome it's hard to NOT make them (and research burrow). With a mobile army, fungal allows you to a) delay/run away as reinforcements pour in while he stressed on micro, or b) split his army. All while doing damage.
Alternatively, 2 infestors can sneak in an clear and expansion's mineral line in no time.
My best micro move so far was using 3 infestors to kill ~6 mutas that were harassing my expansion. Fungal+infested terran makes me feel so gosu.
That said, I play random. By which I mean I play terran, becuase roughly 75% of my freaking games I roll terran. Which isn't bad for my win record as it's my best race, but my protoss play isn't getting any better this way.
edit: just checked... yeah, so I've won one solo ladder game as zerg since going random. I guess all my other zerg games were against people I know and team games. I know nothing! NOTHING!
