I bought a Magic Mouse to go with my MBP as long hours of trackpad use were getting uncomfortable. Great little device and design, but does it come in an adult size?
Return that shit, pronto. Worst fucking mouse I've used in a long time.
I'd love to hear your reasons why. I use the Magic Mouse on a daily basis and it's a dream come true. Sticky scroll wheels are so 90s.
Of course when gaming I switch over to the Sidewinder, but the Magic Mouse isn't marketed as a gaming mouse so I can't fault it on that.
I found both products to be a pain since I was using a MacbookPro and it put more distance between my cursor controller and my keyboard.
Obviously, not a big deal in other situations.
Maybe six months back Merlin Mann talked about some app he used that hide other apps that weren't focused, but my Google Fu is failing me. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
I've been using Spirited Away for that for a long while, but it's buggy with full-screen Flash movies.
edit: he's talked about Spirited Away, but I'm pretty sure he mentioned something else as well.
So I'm a little torn between upgrading my current macbook and selling it to buy a newer one.
I've got the 2009 white 13 inch macbook with the 9400m graphics, the last one before the unibody macbooks. If I keep it I'll probably need a new battery (current one is only good for ~2 hours now), double the ram to 4 gigs (not a big deal), but I'd want a new hard drive, the one I have is pretty small.
Are there any obviously awesome HD brands I should look at? Do they make solid state drives that fit my macbook? Would I be better off just selling it and buying a unibody? Going by ebay prices, I should be able to get $500 fairly easy, it's in great condition.

You should wait until Thursday, then decide.
All signs point to new Macbook Pros being released on the 24th.
Do not do that. You will probably ruin the keyboard and probably the Macbook as well. Shut it off, remove the battery, and clean it with some isopropyl alcohol.
I'm (expecting to be) disappointed. Pictures of the supposed new MBP boxes surfaced today and the 13" MBP still has a 1280x800 native resolution. The 13" Air is 1440x900 though. If they're really not going to bump the res on the 13" MBP I'm going to be one whiny sumbitch.

I have heard the 13" model being bandied about being called the "low-end" 13" model though, so don't be too worried quite yet.
The thunderbolt port is an intriguing idea if true; I wonder how much of the industry outside of apple will get behind the mini displayport-sized connector?
edit: and if it is REALLY good, will one port be enough?

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
Well, word on the internet is that Intel's been testing LightPeak prototypes that are Hybrid USB 3.0/Light Peak cables as well, so I think it's safe to assume we'll see Light Peak implementations that take on a few forms.
Intel has also showed off the ability in the past for light peak devices to be daisy-chained together, kind of like USB can be, so one port could be enough...for now.

The next CinemaDisplay models better have these ports on the back of them; along with USB and firewire, since LightPeak has all the bandwidth in the world to handle that kind of throughput. that would make it a simple two-cable connection to a macbook to provide a full-on docking station... which is pretty sweet.
And yeah, Lion hasn't been seeded to developers yet; chances are nonexistent that we will see anything more than a dev seed in the next month.

Yeah the only information kicking around about Lion is that they are (maybe) using it at Apple, and that the dev seed is coming soon. They are probably going to be pretty firm with "Summer 2011". Maybe at the same event the next iPhone is announced?
I guess I count "out" as Apple having updated the MBP pages with the specs and features of the new, refreshed laptops. The spec page was enough for me, I certainly don't need to the store page anymore.
I have no idea why I'm this frustrated by this (probably because I wanted to buy an updated MBP), but it's some BS that the 13" Air gets a dedicated graphics card and a 1440x900 resolution but a "Pro" laptop gets an integrated GPU chip and a 1280x800 res. Oh and, I believe, the 13" has suddenly lost 3 hours of battery life. This refresh is confusing as fuck.
I feel like this update is something they rushed out the door to get LightPeak / Thunderbolt / whatever in the market, and standardise i5/i7 chips across the MBP range. Especially since it's released without a keynote or anything. It's an incremental update. In, uh, some ways.
I'm really confused about why they removed the option for a higher-res screen on the 15", though. I'd thought the upgrade to 1680x1050 would be a no-brainer, and now it's not even possible?
And it seems the 15" and 17" models have slower processors than the 13" (in GHz, anyway). Granted, it looks like they're quad core chips but customers won't understand that...

The 7 hour battery life is a little irritating for me, since I'm intending to buy come this summer. But am I crazy, or did they actually double the battery recharges? I was under the impression that it used to get about 500 recharges on the average battery, and now they're advertising 1000? If that's actually true, the loss of 3 hours may be worth it.

Now I definitely don't regret pulling the trigger on the 13" air last fall. What a disappointing development on the resolution - you'd think they'd want to standardize that as much as possible so they can design UIs consistently across platforms.

Basically it looks like they've adopted a different standard of testing, and it appears to be more taxing than their previous tests (since it actually includes Flash video).
You'll probably still be able to eke 10 hours out of it.

Hmmm, interesting. I got a 15" at the beginning of the last update, so it'll be a while before I start looking at a new machine, but I'm curious to see what happens with Thunderbolt. Data + HD video (i assume sound is in there too) is a pretty tasty package; hopefully by the time I'm in the market its potential will be widely realized.

Huh, they switched to using Radeon GPU's. The 6750M they're using in the higher end Macbook Pro's seem like a decent jump from the GeForce 330M in last year's. Some rough estimates on benchmarks from Notebook Check. Rough estimates, since they don't have actual results on the card itself:

Yeah, I was a bit quick to make that call — was basing it on the Tech Specs page, as the Store still wasn't up. While they list both Glossy & Antiglare screens, they only list resolutions down from 1440x900.
Those are some impressive spec bumps across the board. Nothing groundbreaking, but a nice little refresh. Hopefully the next update will make the MBP line more attractive compared to the MBA, because there are those of us who care more about weight, screen res, etc than which generation the processor belongs to.

Some of the rumors sounded promising, like hybrid HDs - SSD for the OS, HDD for storage. Also, now that the App Store is up and running, I'm just waiting for them to drop the Superdrive completely from the MBPs. They're not going to put Blu-Ray drives in, and the Apple digital distribution monstrosity provides for every thing you'd use the drive for (if you buy everything again). I'm curious to see what the design team could manage with all the extra space they'd get from ditching the optical drive - if nothing else, you could get a monstrous battery in there.

let me count the bits
I have a 500 gig USB disk hooked up to my Airport Extreme. Today I grabbed Plex and played around a bit with the Airport as a media server.
Works like a charm. Though it's utter and total overkill for my actual setup. :P
Got my printer hooked up over USB for now.
Just gotta get a USB enclosure for a 1TB drive and hookup a USB hub to get time machine working for the wifes macbook (and my future mbp)

Looks like it's a hybrid between what's available now in .6 and .6 Server. Quite possibly a step in an interesting direction.
