anybody actively gaming with Vista ? Anything obviously broken? How is the sound card driver issue working (or not working) out ?
has anyone gotten through all the vista install poodoo and realized that a fav game or a vital piece of hardware doesn't work, or is severely gimped ?
If you're wondering about specific hardware or games you have installed, MS's Vista Upgrade Advisor should at least tell you if your hardware, games, and installed apps will or will not work. It won't tell you if games are slower or not, however, and I don't have Vista yet so I can't say.
so...all programs in my start menu appears to have emptied itself..of..everything today..and vista doesnt appear to let you manually re-add program linka to it..so...yeah.... :?

I don't know if you've realized this, but Vista's start menu works a little differently: you just type some letters in to find what you want.
Or do you mean that after you type letters in, you still can't find what you're looking for because it vanished?
Just installed Vista. Did an upgrade and most of my stuff still works. Seems to be a tad slower, but not by much. Snip tool will be incredibly useful.
I copied some folders and there were a bajillion dialogs. Turned UAC off, now it's less of a hassle. Alt-tabbing between games seems to be a bit more flickery now. Guild Wars works fine at least.
Icons are big! Kind of a nice change with a 1680x1050 desktop.

no..the all programs button above the search, brings up a start menu just like xps..except now..its ..empty..the type to bring stuff up search really doesnt do me much good, as if i try to index enough things to make it useful to me, it slows to a crawl

Got the Home Premium Vista for myself, installed it flawlessly with no snags at all.
World of Warcraft runs like shit on it now. I used to have the resolution settings completely maxed and 40 man raids wouldn't slow it down a bit. Sadly, even with "updated" Nvidia drivers, I have half the graphics settings that I ran with XP and still getting shit framerates when I'm not even in graphic intesive areas...
Pretty upset really, I hope there is something I can do to increase performance.
So, I've uninstalled Vista, and I don't think I'm going back to it. I just had way too many problems with colours, font, excessive glare (which I tried to fix countless times, and couldn't get it right), so now I'm back on XP, and I can use my PC without feeling like I have to vomit.

What card ? If this is the case with my vista install shortly, it will go in the 'install later' bin until SP1 .... Although I have an ATI card, and drivers came out like *yesterday* for it.
I'm really looking forward to custom themes in Aero, as soon as somebody cracks it. It's true Aero itself is kind of hard on the eyes. Too many colors, too many things that are so shaded from top to bottom you can't read one side as well.
My video card arriving is holding up the party, so i can't yet speak first hand... but i am getting VERY conflicting reports on the state of gaming in vista.
Things range from 100% everything is great & wonderful to big slowdowns to sound not working to I can't even get Vista ON the computer.
I really have no idea what to expect.. I just don't want to have the install go fine, and get to the point where I port everything over to the vista box .. only to have it nosedive.

In my experience: DirectX-based games take a small performance hit, but it's not so bad, especially if you turn the sidebar off. OpenGL-based games take a huge performance hit.

I think a lot of people saying 100% fine have fairly good systems. Performance drops are much more noticeable on the ass end as it were.
Would an A64 3500+, 1 gig of RAM, and 7600GT system be in the ass end of the spectrum?
On a different note: Anybody weirded out that Vista Business doesn't come with any games in the Games Explorer?
It makes sense, but still. More space for me I guess.

I REALLY want to try this, but I don't have $100 to waste, and I only have 1 system other than my main box to test in, and it's kind shitty, so I dont think Vista would run on it.
Maybe when I get a pay raise in the spring, I'll get a new machine with Vista on it. We'll see.

I'm running a 2400+ (2ghz winchester) 1gb Mushkin ram and 9800 pro and it's not ass-end at all.
Guild Wars runs maxed out and Half Life 2 runs as good as it did on XP. There might be that 10% hit or whatever but I don't benchmark and my superhuman skills are not as such that I can notice 5 frames missing in a second.

Nvidia Geforce 7700 (and 2 gigs of RAM) which about 8 months ago was top of the line. It should be able to handle wow at max settings easy, hell, it did on XP. I'm wondering if I need to bite the bullet and by myself a new motherboard/quad core processor in order to run this OS (and games) effectively.

Well, now I am done upgrading my system.
A 5.3 overall computer, with 5.9 in my memory and graphics capabilities.
I can run NWN2 smooth as a baby's ass on max settings, no slowdown whatsoever.
And yes, Steam games show up on Games Explorer/

Make sure it's not just the memory. Vista uses more of it and it can give you a huge performance hit if you're pulling stuff on and off of the hard drive from paging. Check your available physical memory after you start the game; if it's low, this could be the problem.

A lot of people saying that performance is abysmal are on RC1, too, so.
So, even on Power Saver mode, Vista is draining the hell out of my battery really quickly.
Then again, I suppose this is a three-year-old LiIon battery I'm talking about, but still, I would swear that it wasn't this bad under Linux.

Retail Vista on a clean install shows a minimal to pointless drop in games performance (10,300 3dmark06 on XP, 9,980 in Vista), and everything Non-game related seems to run better.

Everytime I drag link there, nothing happens.

It doesn't work like that.
It should autmatically search your programs list / running apps, and index it accordingly. I have not had to drop any of my games into the explorer; it's done it all for me.

I just started up Steam and they all dropped right in. But for some reason, it stopped downloading cover art after they got there. Weird.
EDIT: Also, not sure if this is the place for this, but I was using Office 2007 and the new Outlook is awesome. I put in a gmail address and it just worked. I didn't need to go look up gmail's pop3 and stmp servers and what kind of authentication they used and all that crap. Then again, that probably won't work for smaller e-mail servers that aren't in Microsoft's database or whatever. Still, worked great for me.

Huh, does it do that when Windows starts up?
The last time I tried installing Steam on Vista was when I ran it with the old 40 gig I have. You know how that turned out. (Wouldn't boot after the first time)
Going to try again with Counter-Strike: Source.

My point is that it's expensive. I don't know why you'd think stating that would be stupid unless you're living at your parents place or installing false boobs for a living.
