I'm excited about the announcement of the Demon Hunter but I was really just aching for a release date.
I know a lot of people care about PvP, but I don't. And I don't think I'm in the minority.

This would be the silliest of times to be wanting a release date. The game is far from finished.
I don't try to look forward to games for this reason, waiting sucks. I don't watch trailers, teasers or any of that stuff...well at least as much as I can.

It might actually be further along that we think. This weekend Jay said that the game is playable from start the finish now. It might be missing chunks here and there, but its still possible to play all the way through. And theyre giving a 1000 people beta keys already. I'm thinking/hoping beta in the spring, release in the summer.
Realistically, I'm thinking holidays next year. I read SC2: Heart of the Swarm is pinned down as an early 2012 release, so good chance of D3 coming out before then.

Keep in mind it's not multi, if that's something you're wanting. Torchlight 2 will be though, and it'll be out before D3

Ugh, it was exactly the wrong place, between "serious" and "over the top." I enjoy good "over-the-top", like Devil May Cry or Duke Nukem. But the Diablo series (cow level aside) has pretty regularly been on the "serious" side. That cinematic could have been directed by Zack Snyder and John Woo. Why even have crossbows if they're just going to be either Uzis or shotguns?

I have a feeling this is partly because Blizzard North is out of the picture. This Diablo is being made by the Warcraft/Starcraft people and they've always liked their over the top action and silliness.
Remember these are just animatics. The other animatics they had showing on the big screen over the D3 play area for the monk and wizard were pretty srs bsns, just like D2. I'm sure the CG will be super serious deepdank grimdark.

Well, the key people responsible for the first two Diablos are now making the Torchlight games and those aren't exactly grimdark either.
Although, the scene with the king and the queen in the 18 minutes of footage was plenty dark, so the people going all "omg it's action rainbows" are being a bit silly.

I hope the actual in game cinematics are a little more... basic. Not crazy badasses doing sick stunts and DBZ stuff in the air. The Monk and Demon Hunter are the worst offenders
I loved D2's cutscenes, the forces of Hell just seemed so overwhelming, and they were! By the end, the heroes are broken. I think I'd prefer to see the Demon Hunter just barely scrape by fighting all those demons.
I guess they're just more realistically portraying the actual gameplay

This is where D2's decision to present their story through an independent, vulnerable narrator really helped to sell the danger and seriousness of the world without causing a cognitive disconnect at the fact that you just killed like 500 hellspawn

Yeah mine too, when I think of my favorite cut scenes from games diablo 2 and starcraft, and that one really cool warcraft 3 one are always at the top. Nothing really comes close.

No, what? No, guys, the character trailers for the wizard, monk, and demon hunter were created specifically for their announcements. They WILL NOT be in the game in anyway. And they are created using the in game engine.
The monk one was worse than the Demon Hunter one, in my opinion. Not in terms of cheesiness but in terms of animation. It looks like it was made the same way as the WoW cutscene things with the Lich King. Which some people think are awesome, I guess.
Then I saw the gameplay of Monk and all was forgiven.

Yeah, the machinima didn't write shitty dialogue and choreography.
The opening cinematic is more promising, hopefully the game's flavor is more in that line. Lots of hordes of Hell, small chance of hope, large chance of going insane - Diablo 2's cinematics had it exactly right.

They actually asked Jay on the live stream at blizzcon about it and he said he expects the game to be released about 6 months after beta starts.
