Did that Hydrophobia patch ever come out? Anybody try to updated game?
I downloaded the updated version, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. If nobody else posts about it I'll give it a check later today.
FWIW I'm also interested in impressions!
I grabbed the patch and finished the last half of the game with it. The good news is that it played markedly better. The controls are much improved; the jumping/swimming/shooting mechanics are closer to what you would expect from a 3rd person game. It seems to run more smoothly, and changes like making sonic rounds lethal if fully charged make the game much more forgiving if you screw up an environmental attack on dudes. The new HUD checkpoint system completely removes the need for the map (a good thing, it was useless).
The sound design (outside of the water) is still awful, though; most weapons sound like what a computer emits when you hold down too many keys on a keyboard. There's no real feedback when you get shot beyond the bloody screen thing. No noticeable sounds when anything gets hit, no noise when gunfire flies over your head; in fact the game often only makes comprehensible noise when one of the characters talk or if water is rushing in. Every single mechanic is still beneath any good 3rd person game I've played this side of the N64. The AI is fucking retarded and will fruitlessly shoot at you through walls forever if you allow it.
The main character is terrible; about 80% of her lines literally consist of gaggling her partner Scoot's name at him on the radio over and over and over and over and oh my god I hope she drowns. The story has no ending; it literally cuts to black in the middle of some glass breaking and water rushing in, which you've seen and dealt with a thousand times already and could not possibly be worried about.
So yea, the patch improves quite a few things that made it bearable enough for me to finish, but I can't recommend it unless you already made the purchase. The water is the only notable thing the game does, and they only use it in two or three different ways in the entire game. Bioshock did more with water in it's first ten minutes.
I don't have a single one of these games (even Geo Wars 2...), hmm...I kind of have my fill of these sort of games from XBLIG (Score Rush, Decimation, etc)...and Galaga Legions DX is supposed to come out later this year. Space Invaders is tempting, can't you make it play to a custom soundtrack? Ah, yes, thank you Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders_Infinity_Gene
Sounds like Space Invaders is the sure bet of the bunch, unless you like FPS then Serious Sam was awesome way back when, don't know about these.
Xbox LIVE Deal of the Week** :
Week of February 7 – Retro Shooter:
Duke Nukem Manhattan Project, 400 Microsoft Points (50 percent off)
Space Invaders Infinity Gene, 400 Microsoft Points (50 percent off)
Yes. For 400 points, you wont feel ripped off. The game isn't good, but it isnt terrible either. The game does feel a little unfinished, like they left out features they meant to put in. I beat the game, and tried the "challenge" room. The instructions say to keep moving, and "don't forget to use your hydrokinesis!"...wat?
Also, I was still annoyed that Pacman was winning the deal of the week vote... until I tried the demo. Come on Pacman! I figured it was just another pacman game...

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
How is Galaga Legions? Me and my Dad love to play the original, is it worth the fivebux?
I love that game dearly, but I'm warning you right now: It's Ikaruga hard. I can't get past Stage 3. Deliciously addictive though. And if you feel like seeing the later levels, Stage Select is always available.

Yeah, I hated it when I downloaded the trial after it first came out, but the new patch actually makes it fairly enjoyable. I definitely wouldn't have paid more than 400 msp for it though.

I don't know. Hydrophobia had no ending. It didn't even have a middle; it was an introduction and then they ran out of money.

I really like fucking around with the water. It doesn't move that well, but the fact that you can mess with the water level between rooms is very neat to me.
I would love it if the Raw Danger team licensed this engine.
Geo Wars 2 is one of those games I'd buy for everyone I know if live let you gift stuff.
It's a must-have for this price IMO.

Not only is Geo Wars 2 a fantastic game that is great for [strike]penis[/strike] high score measuring, but going for the achievements puts a fascinating twist on most of the game modes.

Hey dude, I just got to the challenge room. They explain Hydrokinesis in the practice section.
Hmmm...I will have to get Geo Wars 2 I guess...Galaga Legions also sounds tempting since I'm sure DX will be 800 or 1200 points (Ikaruga is not really the hardest shooting game by the way, it's more like a puzzle game or Super Meat Boy at the end of the day where you just have to remember to do the right things at the right time...Guwange is much harder). I've always had this XBLA Unplagged disc with Wik, Backgammon, Bejeweled and Geo Wars, it always pisses me off to have to go insert that DVD to play those games so I never played Geo Wars 1 as much as other people did. I think I would rather they make the retail sold XBLA games fully installable - there must be a reason they can't do that (well, if you could install it you could just round robin the game to all your friends). Must be still kind of a tricky thing to work out, prevent piracy and make it user friendly at the same time.
Was looking at videos of the Duke Nukem Manhattan Project game...Wtf it's a side scrolling beat em up?? It looks kind of like Comic Jumper, or a NES style game so I'm interested in it now. Some of these games flew under the radar when they were released, too little advertising and just kind of lost in the hype of more major retail games.

Well I used to be able to beat Ikaruga in five lives. But leaving everything at default changes things.
Stacking comes out tomorrow. Greg from Double Fine used the Stacking Merch and stop motion to make the most adorable promo ever.
The Xbox LIVE Arcade House Party kicks off February 16th with the release of Hard Corps: Uprising and continues into March with a total of 5 releases. Here is the full schedule:
February 16 Hard Corps: Uprising, 1200 Microsoft Points
February 23 Bejeweled Blitz, 800 Microsoft Points
March 2, Beyond Good & Evil HD, 800 Microsoft Points
March 9 Torchlight, 1200 Microsoft Points
March 16 Full House Poker, 800 Microsoft Points
Going to have a hard time not buying all of these.
And Stacking. And I've not started Hydrophobia yet, because I've not finished Deathspank : TOV yet.
I bought Geo Wars 2, Space Invaders, and Galaga Legions. Thanks for pushing me to get Geo Wars 2 - I thought it would be a small upgrade from the first but it's not...it's a gazillion times better. Game journos have really failed me, since reading Twitter more and participating here I am finding games I like in a much more reliable way
Space Invaders oozes style but the gameplay is not much better than the best indie games. it's probably worth $5, not $10.
I was hovering over the buy button for Duke Manhattan but stopped because the screens look so bad...maybe it looks better in motion?? Haven't tried the trial yet
I'm... not convinced I need to buy BG&E HD. I already have the PC version, and I'm not seeing the "HD" part as anything but a resolution change... which I can already do.
Maybe for the achievements?

I keep thinking that if I keep handing over money for the game, then they'll finally make a sequel for me.
This will be the third time I'll buy Beyond Good and Evil. :?
Why not? How many times have you bought Zelda? ;-)
Seriously, though, this'll be my second time buying BGE, and I'm happy for the chance.
Oh, I wasn't really complaining...I mean heck, the game is worth the multiple purchases, tbh. :P
That's more like it. The PC version of the game seemed a little...lacking (it did not scale to higher resolutions very well, at least in my opinion). Likewise, it felt better with a gamepad.
But hey, I'd buy it even if it didn't mean supporting a sequel release. I like the game that much. But possibly helping fuel the sequel? No question.

And I'll definitely be picking up Stacking but I might wait for a sale. I have a ton of other stuff to play.

Noice.

Damn fine indeed. Better make sure I've got enough points on hand to get it on the day.
