Just because it might have gotten lost on the page bottom:
Is there any way to get the song select page to display your high score, instead of just your personal best notes hit and stars? It doesn't make sense they would take that out, but I can't find it. Like, I literally can't find what my best score is on a song on any screen.
The RB3 interface is otherwise really really good, but if they took out all high score tracking...
So...yeah. Wow! The answer is 'No'.
At least there is no obvious way to view the highest score without pressing the yellow button for 'more info'. It seems they forced the page to show star tracking rather than score or both. (Frankly, I hated it in LRB when it would cycle automatically and thus made it difficult to either quickly scroll through the stars or scores. Having to pause and wait sucked.)
Maybe the blue button does something? I don't know why they'd do it without letting the player tab between the choices. Other than their seemingly binary design meetings...
I suspect bass will swap with keys. Drums and Vocals switch (if gender appropriate). Not sure if this is global or if it will switch up on the next boot. Might be interesting to see what other people have when they use a different instrument.
Okay, more info for those who like to have set players:
This list above is true, though I still haven't tried keys. But in songs with keys, so far just the same four instruments as RB1/2. No CPU avatar seems willing to look like a full-on goon. When you place your characters into a slot, it does not have to be in order. Filling the slot is enough.
I did a little testing and discovered that not only to vocals and drums shift (based on song gender) but the band members will rotate around the stage if you select a new instrument without switching a character. It appears to be clockwise with the vocals staying the same.
Example under spoiler:
For my example, here are the players and their instruments (Bold is the instrument I was playing at the time.)
It appears that so long as you remain within the 'career' and you manually switch instruments/characters and start rotating people around, it will keep the last configuration. But dropping out to the main menu will reset the band to the original positions. It will probably swap (C) and (D) for vocals songs when appropriate when the band has rotated.
There might be more tricks and switches depending on the instruments chosen and when, but it definitely appears that you can have a relatively stable band line-up. Why they chose to do it the way they did and not make any of this a little clearer is beyond my ken.
I'm not gonna blame the game because there's really no other way they could have done it
but the whole thing where it only displays a part of the keyboard note highway really throws me
I see a note coming at the far left, I reach for the far left of the keyboard. Except I'm looking at the right section of the highway so the note's really somewhere in the middle of the keyboard. I overshoot notes constantly.
I mean it's not like I'd be doing well even if that were gone, but it definitely adds to the incline of the learning curve by a lot

with guitar as the active instrument, and that's what's working for me.
By the way, does it strike anyone else as odd that a band in RB3 is essentially now a five person band, and yet only four members are on the stage at a time, and you can still only assign four fill-in characters?

Hmm... Well, my explanation is working for me. Maybe I'll see what happens if I put my default avatar choice in a different slot but still play guitar.
As far as the four/five man band thing, that's as designed. They stated a while ago that there would only be four people onscreen at a time. Bass and Keys will swap depending, I suppose, on if you have the keys connected and play that instrument (instead of keys as guitar/bass).
Perhaps it might be possible to have five characters and only four slots filled with the fifth avatar as the keyboard player who might then take up slot 2 during actual gameplay...
Like I said, it seems things are relatively stable all told.
It is impossible to have guitar + bass + keyboard + vocalist. The game asks if you want All Instruments mode turned on the moment the keyboard is switched on, and if you elect not to then it doesn't register the keyboard.
So if there's only four of you and noone wants to play drums, the vocals don't count. That seems pretty shitty to me.

I was having a hard time with the medium keyboard tutorials but I managed to get through them
then I start the hard tutorials and they're throwing multiple three-note chords at me with difficult finger configurations and that's not even what the lesson is about

The only think I can think of as a reasonable explanation why, is that they're still using some old RB1 code and adding the keyboard, in any way, just complicates things. So they just force AIM and shrug their shoulders.
It's probably for the best. I believe that vocals are the least chosen instrument. I don't know why, though, the keyboard can't be viewed as a different instrument so long as the drums or whatever are turned off.

Are they gender swapped for the songs? Because my second female avatar is supposed to be the drummer. She ends up out front on female vocal songs. (The vocalist is based on the Venus Flytrap looking dude from RB1 who had his head shaved in RB2.)
Pro Keys is insane!!! I am sucking it up and going to struggle through medium for a bit until I get more used to the hand positions and stuff. Has anyone else booted up Bohemian Rhapsody on Expert Pro Keys with no fail mode on? That shit is crazy, I was just flailing around for the entire song. I didn't even get 1 star....

Nope. The vocalist and drummer are both male. My bassist is female, but she didn't move. And I wasn't playing any female-sung songs.

Hmm... Too many possible factors to do this shit unpaid. It seems the best result for a stable line-up might be to just put the 'main' avatar in the first slot and everybody else where you want them. It's still all bullshit, but at least it's a starting point.
This game is as awesome as I was expecting. The thing is that my library is probably not as large as a lo of other people's here (I'm at just over 350 including the RB3 disc songs), but it's definitely large enough that I've forgotten half of what I've bought, and scrolling through the song menu is beginning to become really daunting. The new sort options are long overdue, but oh so welcome.
I bit on the keyboard (aside: If you didn't know already, Best Buy has a $15 gift card with any purchase of the game along with standalone keyboard, effectively making it the same price as the fictional keys bundle) and it's really strange to wrap my head around. I played piano for roughly 10 years as a kid, but putting it in a Rock Band note highway context is so disorienting! Loving it, though the early songs on keys are ridiculous for sitting around half of the song doing nothing.
Well, the website is finally up, though the linking page is still under construction.

The drummer and vocalist always swap when you play different gender songs, regardless if your drummer is female or not.
The only time this changes is if you're playing on drums, in which the vocalist swaps with the bassist.
Also, doing a Keys+Guitar+Bass trio pretty much limits your song choices to RB3 songs with keyboard. It's kinda crappy that they won't give Keys an option to do a guitar/bass part if the song has no keyboard part and the other guitarists have selected.

I ended up getting them to switch my game+keyboard preorder for just game only and to refund the difference, and then ordered the keyboard on amazon. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets here before the normal shipments since they didn't even know when they would get them in
