Harmonix have always had One Vision - to deliver fantastic music games. But with poor sales of Green Day Rock Band and The Beatles Rock Band they're really Under Pressure to push more units. Sales of Rock Band 1 + 2 made it look Almost Easy. In The Meantime, all we can do is hope that the company is Still Alive at the end of next year.
The Bee Gees are coming to Rock Band 3. The iconic 1970s tight-pants disco trio is bringing six of their most famous tunes to Rock Band 3 as downloadable content, including, of course, pro versions of keyboard, bass, guitar and drums. Here are the tracks:
“Jive Talkin’”
“Night Fever”
“Stayin’ Alive”
“Nights on Broadway”
“Tragedy”
“You Should Be Dancing”
They will be available on November 16.
Even if you're not old enough to remember doing rails at Studio 54, I defy you to not enjoy these tracks. Not only are they among the catchiest pop songs ever recorded, they're really fun to play in Rock Band 3.
To test out the songs, I created my own Disco inferno by recruiting a full band of G4 hoodlums to play all these tracks, and even those who don't have a sad fascination with pre-drum-machine disco like I do could not deny the funk and flava of these massive hits.
The selection of tracks will provide a workout for every member of your band. The disco drums are particularly tough on "Nights on Broadway," but when you actually get the groove, it feels more like dancing than playing an instrument. The bass lines, too, are more tricky, and much more interesting than the majority of Rock Band's rock tracks. Fake-bass players will be very happy with this collection.
Of course, the most defining feature of the Bee Gees tunes of the late-1970s are the vocals. The Gees (as I call them), were notable for their high soprano vocals that sometimes veer into registers so lofty only dogs can hear them, so squeaky voiced stylists will really shine here. Of course, it will probably be more fun to force your friend who doesn't sing high to soldier through these tunes. We made Attack of the Show's web goddess Moye Ishimoto sing "Jive Talkin'", and it was hilarious (No offense, Moye.) Even G4's resident pro vocalist Mike D'Alonzo admitted defeat at the prospect of doing a passable version of "Tragedy" -- Wuss.
No. We couldn't do the harmonies. They're ridiculous.
My favorite track is "Staying Alive," with its impossible to deny hook and squirrel screech vox. Breaking out your Saturday Night Fever, polyester suit dance moves is a necessity and will make you the hit of the party. Just commit to it. Girls will like it, I promise.
The verdict: This is an awesome, party pack guaranteed to make people laugh and/or dance, as well as provoke a little musical revisionism about the worth of The Bee Gee's music.

I don't think their time in the Limelight is over yet. I mean, they're no longer bigger than Godzilla anymore but they still can put out a Smokin' product.

I'm privy to some internal information that I can't disclose, but it doesn't seem like the company is Flirtin' With Disaster. On the contrary - this could be an Epic move, and it sounds like this is actually going to bring Peace Of Mind to many Harmonix staffers who might have seen this news as a Bad Omen. Most of the Hysteria from the fans is down to uncertainty, made worse by the sort of Troublemaker who likes turning this kind of news into Poison.
Wouldn't it be great if whoever buys Harmonix from Viacom actually gets the product, and wants to put money into getting some of the bigger holdout acts (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd... I'm sure you all have others you want in RB that are clearly holding out...)

Games based on bands aren't a good way of gauging whether or not to keep a company around. Even if the game is amazing, the demographics are going to kill you. I love Rock Band, but I don't like The Beatles. I'm sure there are people out there who love The Beatles, but hate Rock Band. Then there are the people who love both, but don't want to (or can't) spend $texas to prove it.

I don't think the idea that if Beatles/Green Day did well it would keep the company around. Well, maybe. But we're saying that if they did do well, maybe Floyd or Zep would say "well... ok, maybe you can have a couple of tracks."
Releasing band-specific stuff is an incredibly limiting, decidedly dangerous thing to do. Music games are a niche market as it is., and band-specific titles will always sell less than the core titles because the Venn diagram of "people who play music rhythm games" and "people who are fans of band x" will always have a limited amount of overlay.
I know of people who bought B:RB because they're Beatles fans and had never touched a plastic guitar before in their lives. Similarly, I know of people (like me) who bought the AC/DC Live track pack and Green Day Rock Band because they wanted more songs in their game. But I don't know many of these people. Certainly I don't know anyone who went out to buy Green Day/Beatles RB and was so taken with the premise that they went out to buy a core title. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but the conversion rate is so minimal as to not really be worth the effort.
Don't know if this was mentioned, but Harmonix is up for sale. Ruh Roh
Also, what's the deal with the RB3 career mode? I get 90-95% on all the songs on expert but I don't always get "streaks", so I have to do roadshows twice in order to unlock the next stages. Am I missing something? I don't like this new system they have, I just want to go down a list of songs and unlock them bit by bit. Does that even exist anymore, or is it considered outdated at this point.

Outdated. If you just want to play songs, just play songs. Career mode just unlocks clothes/instruments now. And videos staring your band. Penthouse Party is my favorite.
All the songs are unlocked from the get-go??? No way..
Also, I see my DLC and RB1 content, but how do I import my RB2 songs on here too? Tell me RB2 supports that feature..
In the RB3 DLC store menu there's an option to put in codes. Put the code on the back of your RB2 manual and pay the $10 export fee to get your RB2 in RB3.
I had tried to link my game to the site when the feature first launched. It took my code, but still says that my game isn't linked. If I try to link it again it tells me that the code's already in use

And this lame game aside, I'd bet that HMX knew about Viacom's intentions for some time now.

This is what your "State of the Official Rock Band Forums" posts felt like, except even more drawn out.
Now do you see?
I also don't do them anymore. And besides, it's easier to laugh at others. This song shit is just sad.
I don't get this one, can someone explain the song reference?
