... Bwhaha. The final unlockable cameo (for beating all the other dungeons) makes me smile. Well played, sirs. Well played.
So I'm at about total level 1050 or so. Haven't finished the last boss, and the boss of Mastery 1's MINION killed me in a hit, to say nothing of the Mastery-1 boss.
If you've managed to hit L99 in the first mastery dungeon, you should pretty much be walking all over the "final" boss.
I wouldn't worry about "grinding" to unlock the rest of the shadowgram, it'll come naturally anyway.
Make sure you get the tiger den up and running though, the game is alot less stressful once you have 9 smith/9 lunchboxes/9 caravans/9 deliveries!
Not sure what rank highly levelled zombies will drop, but I suspect even if they were level 9999, they'd still be rank 1 and drop trash. I could be wrong however.
I hit floor 60 in the mastery dungeon, but only because I abused the zombie trick to hit like, level 75. I was level 35 when I got to the last boss.
I know in one of the cameo dungeons, the zombies were dropping rank 2 robot masks, and ONLY rank 2 robot masks.
I guess what I should do right now is farm the Mastery Dungeons for Tiger Den levelups, and once I have a few higher level NPCs, see what that does for me. Maybe work at finding rank 2 stuff for my shadowgram, if nothing else.
Anyone know how the insurance thing works? Due to the Tiger's Den, my Insurer now holds 3 items without me paying them -- is that 3 random equipped items, or 3 items randomly from my inventory + my equipment? I know for a while there it was saving my highest + item (I had a +10 hat) but a loss of power while out and about cost me that, so, I can't test if it's just gear or what.
Me and my productivity felt the need to come in and say FUCK THIS GAME SO HARD.
I WANT MY LIFE BACK!
seriously, so fun. I dunno what it is about 2D sprite level grinders, but NIS has my number so bad.
*also reading back through this thread ... FUCK why did I not recruit the first 1/1/1/2/1/1 human I saw, I let the guy walk away sad... I forgot about the tiger's den-that-I-do-not-have-yet. >_>
What is it with suddenly spiking damage from enemies, anyways? Here i am, rocking through the 8th dungeon (i think it's 8...the jungle one anyways), the Snake Ladies, Pigs, and Golems aren't even doing a point of damage...then i catch a special attack from a Dragon and it's 1500points and goodbye for me. wtf...
Saa...
i know i asked this before but...when exactly does the Shadowgram open up more? i'm still locked in with just the chest section available, and there's only so much you can do with that.
i wish my Excavator would pull up the rest of the Dengeki cards already...i've got 1-5, and he seems to have got stuck there (though he does pull up some decent equipment). i've got Toro doing the job, and his stats are 10across the board, but haven't gotten any better with the Tiger's Den (while everyone else has gone through the roof)...i wonder if i ought to swap him out...
The reason he hasn't gotten any better is that the Caravan requires two stats, I believe, and those go up at half the rate the others.
In addition, they round DOWN. So if you don't gain a stat up, you don't get anything.
So in order to level up those guys with 1-5 in their stats, you have to make a dive down to like, floor 50 -- going to floor 10 5 times doesn't count. Once they get in the mid teens - 20s, you can start doing floors 1-10 over and over for levels.
In fact, one of the Degenki dungeons is a Hookshot dungeon, which means if you really want to, you can set the caravan to like, floor 10, then run off the edges of the world over and over again for fast levels.
i know i asked this before but...when exactly does the Shadowgram open up more? i'm still locked in with just the chest section available, and there's only so much you can do with that.
YOU have to unlock it more. It's a menu selection in the Clinic, Unlock Territory or some such.
So I've been grinding for Innocents for the ladt FOUR FUCKING DAYS and I have a total of three of the fuckers. Anyone have any ideas on how to get them?

Fully explore every floor in a Mastery Dungeon. You'll find more.

Here's a tip, exploring the entire floor isn't worth the time unless you want the recruit to also use. It's faster to just go down another floor then explore. It really is. If you hit a hero ambush room and there isn't one there it's not worth exploring. It's completely random, you just want to maximize the number of monsters you see per minute.

Jesus I'm going to be slammed with games for a while.
The question is to Start this game before I finish EO3, if I start it I will likely never return to EO3. Also another question do I start this Before Golden Sun DS or after.......First time in a long time that I have had too many games to play.
Are recruits shown as purple dots on the mini-map, even if they're in an unexplored room on the other side of the map? I know that elite fodder characters do. I'm not entirely sure about recruits because I keep forgetting to look for the dot when starting a new floor.
Seriously though, just keep grinding the floors, you'll run into them eventually. I usually cut out at floor 5, 10, or 20. Now that I have a Caravan with multiple stops, though, I'm aiming for 55.
i know i asked this before but...when exactly does the Shadowgram open up more? i'm still locked in with just the chest section available, and there's only so much you can do with that.

Oh...My...God...
i've been sitting here looking at the 開放 option for a week now and never once actually translated it out to "Unlock". Everytime i selected it, the cursor was over already opened territory and didn't do anything...
*massive forehead thwack*
Alright...now let's see how we do on the Mastery Dungeons with this Fully Operational Battle Station.
Thanks for the patience with my lazy foolishness all.
The boss of Mastery 1 can still eat a dick, even with me being stored level 2000+ and level 100, still get one shotted.
On the plus side, my caravan is now to the point that I can have it show up every 5 or 10 floors all the way down. I now have the Unlosing Sword (Rank 1), which has Sword Mastery 3. I thought forcing it with another item with 2 an 1 would get me some dual wield skill, but it actually appears that it gives you special attacks when you dual wield two items, with Sword Mastery 1, 2 and 3 on all of them.
I might just merge my Longsword +11 (Rank 2) into it. It looks nice. There's also a laser sword in one of the dengeki dungeons that's +50% to attack, even at 0% condition that'd be great.
Insurance is up to 9 items saved, which may be the max. I don't know the algorithm (does it go after your equipped gear first? i.e., am I at the point that I can't lose my gear?) but I didn't lose ANY equipped gear when I went in last.
Also, got a booster item that gives + to XP, and another one that gives + to HP regen (which I can't find space for yet, it's 3x3). Got one that gives 3% of my max HP in WP whenever I kill things, but that's honestly not that good.
I wonder if I get a different source of hero energy later on.
Just got an Absorber -- 2x2 Booster item. Causes your items to ignore condition damage if you take no damage from an attack. There's apparently another one called Energy Saver that reduces EN usage.
It apparently stacks with Appetite Engine -- combined, you don't lose EN unless you're dual wielding, lifting, or using special attacks?
We should start putting together a useful FAQ for the OP.
Heres what me, a newbie, thinks would be useful.
1) A list of all the different 'random rooms' (anti-gravity, treasure, anti-hero etc)
2) How to make yourself not so EN starved all the time.
3) How do you decide if a weapons better then a different weapon.
4) Money. I'm on level4 and unless i find a treasure room or am very lucky, i barely break even after repairs. Does this problem go away at a certain level?
5) Difficulty. Should we be using the church early on to get better drops (possibly solves money problem?)
6) A list of total levels recommended for each story level would be useful.
7) The body modification...while i get the basics of it, I'm sure theres plenty of things i could improve on. Right now im mostly just digging out the hero power sources and feeding a container and a right arm.
8) Did i mention EN starvation issues and suggested solutions?
Last night i was so pissed. I starved myself accidentally. ran into an anti-hero room with 0% EN. I kicked all there asses, didnt take any damage so wasnt paying attention to my health. killed the last monster, moved one square then died of starvation. Lost my only centar body which i was loving.
4) Money. I'm on level4 and unless i find a treasure room or am very lucky, i barely break even after repairs. Does this problem go away at a certain level?
No, it goes away when you learn it's a waste of time to repair. Just go in every dungeon naked and you'll find plenty to equip. The only thing I take is an Appetite helm and a Paw in case I'm going after a boss.
Once you start doing the higher level dungeons, money is trivial.
Once you die 10 times you get the insurer. He always saves at least 1 item, and as you level him up (not pay him) he saves more. Mine saves 9 items -- the first 5 are always my equipment. After that, 4 random items from my pouch.
I don't believe the Church affects drops. I could be wrong.
Appetite Engines (from the first dungeon) are good for EN issues. You can synth them with a better helmet (the Robo Mask from Zombies is good) and move the skill over to the new helm. I usually run around with one on right now. I do have a Snake Helm with the other ability (gain EN upon killing things), but no use out of that as of yet.
I'm loving the Absorber. Take no damage? Take no item damage, either. And since your items aren't getting damaged, no money issues and you take less damage, longer.
2) How to make yourself not so EN starved all the time.
A lot of people swear by skill No Pain No Gain, which halves EN consumption and is found on the Appetite Engine, headgear dropped by Spinies. It's unfortunate that it has a cost of a whopping 8 skill points - the cap on most items - and takes up your head slot, which has some of the best skills in the game. Personally, I get by on edible item drops. Head skills are too good to give up.
3) How do you decide if a weapons better then a different weapon.
It's a judgement call based on the bonuses does the item confers - SAT/LAT and HIT are the most important - potentially useful skills, and range. The range and penetration on spears is fantastic, so I'll typically take a sizeable hit to my stats to wield a spear.
4) Money. I'm on level4 and unless i find a treasure room or am very lucky, i barely break even after repairs. Does this problem go away at a certain level?
Your items are currently utter trash and not worth repairing, or insuring.
6) A list of total levels recommended for each story level would be useful.
You can tackle each story dungeon as soon as it opens up. I beat the story mode without setting foot into any optional dungeons, and I only racked up four deaths.
7) The body modification...while i get the basics of it, I'm sure theres plenty of things i could improve on. Right now im mostly just digging out the hero power sources and feeding a container and a right arm.
Chip yourself appropriately. It's a Nippon Ichi game, so building your character for all-out offence is the only valid strategy. Choose between SAT or LAT and specialise - they each have their advantages, but in my opinion LAT doesn't shine until the post-game. Add some HIT squares as required. Add token and equal amounts of SDF and LDF so that you don't get pasted by trash. SPD is terrible. Against tough opponents, your defensive attributes are meaningless, so don't dedicate much of your Shadowgram to those.
I wouldn't worry too much about your Hero Energy before you get large components, a good insurer and some customised equipment. For now, direct everything to your container so you can carry more chips home.
Also note that you'll be overwriting your Shadowgram constantly as you acquire better chips and units.
Shiren the Wanderer DS is my favorite non PC roguelike. The one released in the US with the shitty cover that you can find at your nearest Best Buy for peanuts if it is anything like mine.
The Wii Shiren game isn't quite as good and is a bit rarer and newer.
I haven't played too terribly much of this game (not owning a working PSP would do that, but I played about three hours this weekend on a loaner) but the game is about on the same level as the two Izuna: The Unemployed Ninja games. This one has an edge if you're into gratuitous N1 references as opposed to gratuitous lesbian and boob references.
I tried Shiren but the setting was just too dang boring. I loved Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (believe me I'm as surprised as you about that) but ZHP is probably one of my favorite roguelikes so far. But I totally adore grinding for stats. I think it's better then Izuna tho; I have both of those and I didn't get very far into either before I got bored of them.
Game just crashed. Or rather, the PSP did. I was running it off USB -> PSP power and, well, it's not enough to keep up with the PSP.
Lost ALL my gear, although my items in storage aren't affected. Still, it's a huge blow.
Edit: Anyone know where I can find a battery for the PSP-1000? Pref high capacity? Even fully charged, I get about 3 hours, that can't be right... can it?
Beat the main storyline. Newgame+ automatically fires off, you can select NOT to go to the last battle after beating the final dungeon, but, yeah. Well.
Ending was cute.
Thoughts:
- Difficulty isn't NEAR as bad as what people say. It's hard in spots, but reviews make it sound like it's NIS's punishment for the unbelievers or something. It's not. Although I do admit to having played Roguelikes a LOT, so...
- Tiger Den breaks the game. Having a Delivery guy who can take 4 items at a time 9 times, or an Insurance guy who keeps all your gear + 4 random other items for free is freaking broken.
- Cosplay gear (like Excalabog) may not be worth it. It's EXPENSIVE to do anything with (15x more than anything else).
- Christ, this is great. It's not PERFECT, but if you're looking for a portable RPG or Roguelike or even a quick Disgaea fix, ZHP is ideal.
Simply put, this is the most fun I've had with my PSP yet. This should be picked up by anyone with the system.
Already got my first alternate ending.
Beat Darkdeath right after getting the belt, and Etranger's mother told Super Baby to kill me. So she turned herself into a Godzilla sized baby. Roll credits.
I'm about 250 total levels in and on story level 4.5. I like that i can pull it out and do 7 levels of the master dungeons on the train to work, port out via the caravan, and it contributes to my overall game. I was afraid that this was going to be another slow moving grid game like disgea, which can be fun for a while but the grinding feels so much longer when every fight you do is so structured.
At first i didnt get it. Now i really see the Nethack/Roguelike method to the game and find it a great adaptation.
I kinda hope that Disgea 4 is going to do this same method of fighting.

I completely missed the fact that Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai is one of the cameos (it's the one that has corridors collapse as you walk on them). Wonder how they translated that one. The raw translation is something like "My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute".

BTW. Whats the anti-gravity room do?
1. Carrying things doesn't cost extra EN (Common Sense Theory)
2. You get 2 moves for every one (Inverse of what Super Gravity Room Does)
Not sure yet.
Pretty sure it was the opposite of Super Gravity, because iirc I was getting two moves to the enemy's one.
I WANT MY LIFE BACK!

There are better roguelikes on the DS and Wii anyways, and if you go pc then you get to the realm of better FREE roguelikes.
Name them.
No, really, I love these. Except for the PC, no interest in that.

Newbies. Duel Wield seems awesome. However it will drain you massively compared to not.
dual wielding I couldnt go more then 6 levels down without running out of food/health items.
NEVER dual wield. It's just not worth it unless you're fighting a boss.
And if you go in naked, bring meat or at least the Appetite Helm.
Not "reduce to 0", destroy. Outright destroy.
What. The. FUCK.
Holy Cats!
What/Where was it? i've yet to see any thing like that.
