Disgaea isn't dissimilar, however. You can hit up an item world dungeon for 10 levels, get the gency, and then port out. You get slightly better gear, the occasional innocent, etc etc.
Beat the main storyline. Newgame+ automatically fires off, you can select NOT to go to the last battle after beating the final dungeon, but, yeah. Well.
Ending was cute.
Thoughts:
- Difficulty isn't NEAR as bad as what people say. It's hard in spots, but reviews make it sound like it's NIS's punishment for the unbelievers or something. It's not. Although I do admit to having played Roguelikes a LOT, so...
- Tiger Den breaks the game. Having a Delivery guy who can take 4 items at a time 9 times, or an Insurance guy who keeps all your gear + 4 random other items for free is freaking broken.
- Cosplay gear (like Excalabog) may not be worth it. It's EXPENSIVE to do anything with (15x more than anything else).
- Christ, this is great. It's not PERFECT, but if you're looking for a portable RPG or Roguelike or even a quick Disgaea fix, ZHP is ideal.
Simply put, this is the most fun I've had with my PSP yet. This should be picked up by anyone with the system.
Already got my first alternate ending.
Beat Darkdeath right after getting the belt, and Etranger's mother told Super Baby to kill me. So she turned herself into a Godzilla sized baby. Roll credits.
Tiger's Den breaks the regular game, but it's absolutely required for the post game. Since Tiger's Den really doesn't kick in until then it's perfect.
Money is absolutely worthless. You can get millions in 20 mins in the Dengeki dungoens.
Okay, i just played some levels in the first mastery dungeon. have some questions.
1) I got an item called 'Gator Bite' which describes itself as an item that lets you devour dying enemies and steals there skills. Is this really as powerful as it sounds? does this permanently grant me new inherant specials?
2) I also got *two* dengeki cards from the same run (digger) my caravan was on level 7, and i just checked it before i logged off. found two cards on it. So does it matter what dungeon i unlock? Are they of variying difficulties or should i just pick two at random.
I'm really enjoying it. Although I dunno if part of it's because I named the main character Tavros and is running around with a spear and robot boots and dies horribly a lot.

Just go random. But unlock the Magic Index dungeon first; that's where you can do the powerlevelling cheat.
On the one hand, this is a really easy game and power-levelling isn't at all necessary.
On the other hand, the whole point of this game is to break it in new and exciting ways. The game balance is intentionally a train wreck, and that's okay!
On the other, other hand, power-levelling is the most boring means of breaking the game and the bonuses it confers are pretty terrible compared to all the other things you could spend your time doing. If you want to trivialise the game, learn how to best use the Shadowgram.
Also: Apparently the Dengeki gear is all 1 star... BUT... counts as "Final Boss Tier" -- i.e., you can synth it up to +99. This is as stupidly overpowered as it sounds, and is why it costs so much to work with them.
Just finished watching the Disgaea anime series for the first time, I think I need to extract money from the wallets of everyone I know so I can buy this. Although I'll probably actually need to buy a PSP first...
The charm of these games is just too much to handle.
Beat the boss of the first Mastery dungeon, after I discovered a level 120ish zombie near a mirror. GLEE!
Even stole the 2 pieces of Darkdeath Evilman gear she had on.
So. Darkdeath Body is +10% to evrything except SDF and LDF, which is 20%. It has an attack spell built in.
Darkdeath RA is ... +10% to everything except SAT and SDF, which is 20%. It has "Dual Strike" -- your regular attacks hit twice in a row.
... Holy shit. Why would you ever NOT use this stuff?
Edit: Holy crap, the hero's theme song when wearing the Darkdeath gear? It's a gothic choir.
I'm on the boss of level 4.2. I'm confused how im suppose to set up these mirrors. I've moved them around and had them both pointed at the bosses shell but it wont break. Whatsup?

You have to direct the two beams of light into the big mirror behind you. That confused the heck out of me too.

Hahah. I did the same thing.
Try the opposite way.

... what?
Make level 9999 zombies in Index dungeon. Bring along some items with the skill to eat non organic. Kill zombies ad nauseum. Eat their equipment. Pick up their money. They drop 800k every couple of kills or so.
BTW the Index dungeon is not the best place to level, the 17th Dengeki dungeon is. You can get to 9999 in under 15mins there. Doing that in index takes 4-5 hours.
To all the people complaining that powerleveling breaks the game: Have you beaten the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th mastery dungeon?

Yeah, but 17th is hard to unlock.
I can't get past about level 30 in the 2nd Mastery dungeon. I'm only stored level 4000 or so, however. I might go back to Church+9 and the 2nd Mastery, 3 star gear starts dropping down at the bottom then.
Also: Apparently a Large Expansino Booster is the best way to break the game early post-game, as with the proper energy you can get it up to, say, +255% to all stats that your expansion gives at least 1% to (this is the real point of rare metals), and Unlosing Capes are... +3% to all stats.

So just what total level /shadowgram stuff do you need before starting the 9999 zombie thing?
Basically, the Index Dengeki dungeon causes any monsters next to each other to merge.
It has mirrors on every floor (clones any monster in front of it every 6 turns)
And Cinders (they stand back up after dying a 15 turns later).
So basically you keep killing Cinders until you can insta-kill them, then clone them ONCE, and let the two merge. You then kill that one until you can insta-kill them again. Then clone them ONCE. And keep it up.
With the EN Preserving Shadowgram addon, you can use the Silk hat with 1 (technically 1.5) Cinder and keep yourself at break even food point. Without that addon, you need 3.
I think it's 3, anyway. 3 (1.5) might be the "gains EN over time" point, where you actually get MORE food for killing than you lose.
The intro was the funniest thing ever, and I'm advancing well - but holy damn, "heroes don't get paid" has never been more true. I just started Chapter 3, and up to now I've barely managed to keep my equipment repaired. I opened up the block-modifications thing, but I don't actually have the money to pay for Mods to put on the many Chips I've managed to set.
I think I'm going to have to go and do some Pauper runs in the previous dungeons, and see if I can find more items to sell or something.

Don't repair stuff, just chip or sell it. You should go in every dungeomn for a good while completely naked. I just go in with an Appetite Hat.

Given my uncanny skill to not find any pieces of armor, ever (seriously, in all this time, I've found one Dwarf Helmet and one LongRange Cannon. That's it) that seems kind of suicidal, unless the armor bonuses are lesser then I thought.

Its not really suicidal cause you start at level 1 every time anyway. Also, this isnt a standard rpg where your characters weapons determine his damage. The weapons can boost the basic stats of your character, by the % on the weapon description screen, but as you gain levels and put stuff in the shadowgram, your pumping your base stats .
This took me a while to understand, but its really kinda simple.
say a weapon has +20% SAT 5%SAD (That is 20% meele attack and 5% meele defense).
So your damage is your characters basic STA numbers x shadowgram (without a weapon). With this weapon your doing your characters base STA damage x shadowgram bonus x + 20% weapon.
Sure it adds up but early levels it really doesnt matter. When you unlock the shadowgram, work mostly on filling it up with SAT or LAT (your preference). Hit/Defense/speed numbers can help also but early game its kinda negligible. Just give it a try. Put 2 meat chunks and a healing item in your inventory, remove all your equipment and just go in like that (Appitite engine would be the only suggested item because it cuts your EN usage).
I started the game going in with full equipment and unless i had a lot of meat drops, i was constantly running out of EN/health no later then 4-5 levels down. When i started going down naked I had a much easier time because the EN usage is cut massively.
When you get to a boss, wait until your almost on top of the thing equip two weapons and one or two shot the guy. Later (much later) when you start to get into mystery dungeons or synthing items or really deep dungeons, it starts to be worth wearing specific equipment.
Also, for quite a while gold has little serious purpose except to repair/synth or enlarge your storage and there are lots of fast money gaining tricks you can do later on when you really need it so dont feel like you need to save it. Just build up your storage until it gets crazy, if you have a favorite weapon, repair it, keep your appitite engine repaired. Once you start feeling really comfortable with the game mechanics, then go looking for Faqs about how the deeper gameplay stuff works out.

You don't need anything at all but time. No food, no gear, nothing. Kill zombies, trigger unlosing mode, pick unlosing LDF. It's HP positive with 2 zombies.
P.S. I don't buy the argument this stuff breaks the main game since dengeki dungeons and mastery dungeons are designed as post game content to begin with, so how is that relevant?
This was taken from the Game Faqs message board. I take credit for none of this.
I'm sure the people responsible will eventually make them official FAQ's.
Powerleveling Ranger!:
Let's look at the details.
1) Synthesizing combines 2 pieces of equipment of the same category to create an improved item.
2) The item you choose first is the base item and thus determines what the item becomes.
3) After an item is synthesized it gains a green +Number, this number is limited by the rank of the item.
- Rank 1 items max at +9
- Rank 2 items max at +19
- Rank 3 items max at +29
- Rank 4 items max at +39
- Rank 5 items max at +49
- Rank 6 items and Dengeki/Boss items max at +99!
4) Rank of items determines how much condition boost they recieve, e.g Rank 1 recieves 1 per synthesis level,
Rank 6 recieves 6 per synthesis level.
5) Synthesizing an item with another synthesized item will give a condition boost equal to that item's synthesis level, e.g If I choose a Dengeki Item as a base 'Box' and I synthesize it with a Rank 6 item which has a synthesis level of 99, which equates to (99 x 6) a condition bonus of 594%!!! So I will end up with 'Box +99' with a condition of 694%!!!
6) In order to get a max condition of 694% you must choose a Dengeki/Boss or rank 6 item which has not been previously synthesized or has only been synthesized with Rank 6 items.
7) Condition on an item is a multiplier for that item's base stats, e.g a Laser Blade with 694% Condition will be 6.94 times as powerful with a Satk aptitude of 347%!!!!!
8) Negative aptitudes also multiply, hence avoid synthing with items which have negative aptitudes.
9) Rare metals can be synthesized which will increase the base aptitude by 1% of its relative stat. These use up 1 point of Synthesis level on an item.
You can assign skills and specials onto your synthesis weapon provided that there are enough points for the skill allocation and that the skill isn't exclusive to an item.
Step 1: Get to level 8 in story mode and go to the boss level, steal Noire's 6 star Skull Mask.
Step 2: Farm lots of head-gear for synthesizing, I reccommend doing Index Dungeon cloning the zombies for lots of 2 star.
Step 3: Synthesize the Skull Mask to have whatever skills you desire, Let's give it No Pain No Gain and the special move Bone Cold which comes with the Skull Mask, so Synthesize Skull Mask with Appetite Engine.
Step 4: OPTIONAL - Synthesize your desired outcome Headwear with Rare metals to either gain or increase the Headwear's base aptitudes. E.G I will use Lucilia Ornament and fuse it with a rare metal which increases Satk by 1%.
Step 5: Synthesize all the Headwear you collected, first on eachother i.e Robo Masks & Curse Bands to their limit, if you collected the 2 star ones from Index Dungeon they limit at +19.
Step 6: Synthesize all the synthesized (+19 Curse Bands/ Robo Masks) onto the 6 Star Skull Mask (it's cheaper this way than synthesizing all the headgear directly onto the Skull Mask 1 by 1), Remember to always choose the 6 Star Skull Mask as the base and to always re-select the skills you want, Keep synthesizing til you reach +98 (Don't need the extra +1 because it's redundant on the final synthesis).
Step 7: This is the final Synthesis for your Uber Headwear. Synthesize the +99 Skull Mask on your desired Dengeki/Boss/6* Headwear, Remember to re-select skills. Profit!
In my example I used a Lucilia Ornament with 1 time synthesis with a Rare-Metal which increases atk. The resultant is :
Condition: 689% (I lose 5 % because I used one level of synthesis for the rare Metal)
SATK: 6% (Originally 1% from synthing with Rare Metal)
SDF: 137% (Originally 20%)
LDF: 137% (Originally 20%)
LAT: 137% (Originally 20%)
Now the reason why I synthesized with a Rare Metal is because of the boost you recieve from Mod Parts, You will recieve a percentage increase provided that the item has at least 1% gain in a stat. However for each Rare Metal synthesis you forego the extra 5% condition you would have recieved from just synthing soley with 6* items.
Now lets say we have an L - Head Mod chip that we've boosted to 255%, let's add that onto our Lucilia Ornament.
The final result is:
Lucilia Ornament+99
Skills: No Pain No Gain, Bone Cold
Condition: 689%
SATK: 261% (Lucky I synthed in that Rare Metal or else this would be zero)
SDF: 392% (Originally 20%)
LDF: 392% (Originally 20%)
LAT: 392% (Originally 20%)
(The extra 255% isn't visible when you look at the item, but it's noticeable when you look at your stats)
Ideally you can synth rare-metals for all missing stats or just to massively boost 1 stat of your choice.
Tip: For synthesizing swords/axes/staves/spears the best place to get fodder items (Items you collect just to increase the synthesis level) is level 8, there will always be at least 2 Hook shots per level, and it's always in the room you start in, so just dive and collect, rinse and repeat and you will have spiffy uber
Swords/Axes/Staves/Spears in no time. However getting 6* items in the first place to fuse with is the tricky part, You can always steal a 6 star Sword off Laharl however it requires trekking all the way to the bottom of the dungeon. Please list if you know of any ways to gather 6* items sooner.

In conclusion:
Employees with high stats rise quickly, while employees with low stats rise slowly.
Employees with an ability level of 5, will require you to be on floor 20.
Employees with an ability level of 1, will require you to be on floor 100. (1's are pretty much worthless)
So with an ability level of 6, you need 17 floors, and when it becomes 7, 15 floors, level 8, 13 floors, level 9, 12 floors, and 10, it will rise with 10 floors.
This is this other tidbit I got but I can't make sense of it.... Search up those two Japanese letters... DAMN.
The mascots, Toro and Koro both have a starting ability of 10 in everything.
Because of the fusing aspect of the Dengeki Index dungeon, grinding levels here is a bit more complicated than just using Mirrors to duplicate Zombies. Here's a VERY detailed method on how to do this efficiently and safely.
REQUIREMENTS
First, you'll need to have the Index Dungeon unlocked. (duh) Set your caravan to around floor 15 or so then jump down the Mastery Dungeon and hope that your excavator has a dengeki ticket. Next, you'll need the following items:
Silk Hat - use this ONLY when you've cloned 10 zombies already. Unequip it when fusing to avoid COND decrease. Might want to bring extras just in case.
Curse Band - use this in the first few floors to slip past enemies while looking for the proper grind area.
Gas Mask - once you're done grinding, this will protect you from poison fields left by the snake ladies.
Bring a couple of meats, a few potions and 1 or 2 weapons as well. I'll leave the facilities up to you.
PREPARATION
Have the cape and Curse Band equipped. The zombies start appearing on the 2nd floor, so rush through the enemies (curse band helps) and find the stairs. On the 2nd floor, you'll want to find an area that resembles this diagram:
Q - free space
< - mirror facing left
= - clear straight path exitting the area (preferably towards the stairs)
This is just a recommendation. The most important thing is to have at least 2 free walkable spaces all around the mirror. If you can't find one, head to the next floor. Just hope that you find one early since zombies disappear in the later floors. I suggest backing up your savefile before entering the dungeon just in case you don't get the proper area. When you have it, find a random zombie and carry it in. Next is the cloning method:
CLONING to 10
You'll want to clone until you have a total of 10 zombies. I know 15 is the best amount since you'll be attacking infinitely but you'll have a very hard time fusing the zombies properly. Though 11 works just fine, 10 is foolproof especially when the zombies don't cooperate. Here's your diagram:
X Q T Q Q Q
X D M < Q Q
X B H K Q Q
X Q Q Q Q Q
X = = = = = =
Q - free space
< - mirror facing left
= - exit path
IMPORTANT: make sure you can consistently OHKO a zombie before you start cloning. The best way to know when you're ready is if you can OHKO them naked. (no equips)
1. Position yourself at point H then throw the zombie on point K, which is right next to the mirror's side.
2. Lift the zombie from point K, throw it onto point T. Without leaving point H, wait for the zombie to walk toward you to point M.
3. On point M, the mirror will duplicate it, creating a zombie on point D. Lift the zombie at point M and throw it onto point K. Kill it.
4. By now, the duplicated zombie would've either moved to point M or B. In any case, lift and throw it onto point K then kill it.
5. Stay at point H and attack the air for a while until a zombie revives facing AWAY from you, then move to point B.
6. Walk along row X for 15 turns. Now you've reset the other zombie's revive cycles, allowing them to revive one after the other.
7. Move back to point H and kill zombies until the last one revives.
8. Repeat steps 2-7 until you have a total of 10 zombies on point K.
It's important to walk for 15 turns outside of a newly revived zombie's view to reset all of the zombies' revive cycles. This will make sure that there are no gaps inbetween zombie revives. You can also take this time to grab items and such. Holding O speeds up the movement and prevents item pick-ups. This is nifty for walking around the floor littered with stuff.
Assuming you can OHKO each zombie, you will have 5 free turns after each 10 zombie interval. Don't forget to use Unlosing LDF whenever possible, but make sure you use it during the 5 free turns.
FUSING
This part needs a little experimentation depending on how good your stats are. My method fuses 2 zombies of the same level, thus doubling their level and boosting their stats by quite alot. To have a rough idea on when you should start fusing, you should first be able to OHKO zombies for more than 3 times their HP with a 0% cond weapon. Now for the fusing process:
X Q T Q Q Q
X D M < Q Q
X B H K Q Q
X Q Q Q Q Q
X = = = = = =
Q - free space
< - mirror facing left
= - exit path
1. You have 10 zombies on point K. After the 5 free turns, kill zombie#1 to 9.
2. When zombie#10 revives, lift and throw it onto point M to duplicate it. After the zombie's turn, it will fuse.
3. Lift the newly fused zombie at point M and toss it onto point K. Kill it.
4. You will have 1 free turn before zombie#1 revives.
5. Kill zombies until one of them revives facing away from you, then move back to point B and walk across row
X for 15 turns to reset all the zombies' revive cycles. Now you'll need to "prepare" the next zombie to fuse by making him zombie#10
6. Using the Menu->Enemies option, find a zombie that hasn't been fused yet, and kill it. (i.e. 5 zombies are lv10 while 5 are lv5. Kill a lv5 one) If the NEXT zombie revives facing away from you, then proceed to the next step. If not, repeat this entire step.
7. You've killed a non-fused zombie, and the next one in line is facing away from you. Move back to point B then walk along row X for 15 turns. Since you reset the cycle, the current zombie standing becomes #1, while the non-fused one that you killed earlier became #10.
8. Repeat steps 1-7 until you've fused all non-fused zombies and equalized their levels.
If you suddenly can't OHKO the newly-fused zombie, STOP fusing! Equip a Curse Hand (you'll see alot of them around you) to boost your SAT and take off your Silk Hat while you're at it. Resume fusing ONLY after you can OHKO consistently. (again, with a 0% COND weapon to be sure)
FINISHING UP (and some notes)
Early on, the levels are a bit slow going at about 2 levels per 10 kills. Later on though the exp gain from zombies grows substantially. As an example, I was getting 3-4 levels per 10 kills at lv600+ fighting against lv480 zombies. Once you reach the desired level, wait for a zombie to revive facing away from you then take the exit. Wear your Gas Mask so that the poison fields won't wittle your ungodly HP down. Take the caravan exit or simply clear the dungeon to get your total levels.
btw, whenever i say "walk along row X", i simply mean walk on spaces outside of the (faced away) zombie's view range. Some layouts won't have an entire row 2 spaces behind you so i thought i'd point that out.
P.S. I don't buy the argument this stuff breaks the main game since dengeki dungeons and mastery dungeons are designed as post game content to begin with, so how is that relevant?
How is it not?
If you power-level, it makes the main game storyline dungeons crazy boring; thus, broken. Case closed.
While your correct in some ways, (some fights do become more trivial if all your doing is going 1-1 fighting), The story mode has more to it then that. (Such as moving mirrors, managing EN/Health). Even if you consider that part of it not enough to warrent power leveling the difficulty spikes as well as the scaling of damage with your level (such as with poison), basically will require some Powerleveling.
Besides, these NIS games have generally not been about balance.

Oh, totally. I'm not saying it's a flaw by any means. Powerlevelling is required in NIS games if you even want to GLANCE at post game stuff. There's just some games where the power-levelling is easily done and accessible early enough that it removes a good percentage of challenge from the main game, like the Failure Weed trick from Phantom Brave. Same thing here.
Besides, these NIS games have generally not been about balance.
You're right, but the story mode doesn't require any power-levelling. You can quite happily complete the game going from one chapter to the next, without delving into any optional content.

No, the PS3 will not play PSP games. That would be nice, though.
Mumbly, there are people that don't care to buy a PSP, but would like to play some of the PSP games. Sony would benefit from increased software sales over PSN, and they could even charge a reasonable fee for the emulator. Same with the PS2, which people have been harping on about for years now.
Personally, while I have a PSP (slim), I find using a controller and a monitor far superior than the cramped and not so ergonomic handheld. Games don't always get the attention they deserve because of this. Yes, I am aware the PSPgo provides a solution, but I'm not upgrading hardware, and really, if someone has a PS3 that supposedly "does Everything", its reasonable to expect Sony to develop an emulator.

If you want to trivialise the game, learn how to best use the Shadowgram.
... what?
The charm of these games is just too much to handle.

You have to direct the two beams of light into the big mirror behind you. That confused the heck out of me too.
Hahah. I did the same thing.
Try the opposite way.
6th time now?
Known issue, apparently -- If the game is loading when you go into sleep mode, it crashes.
jambaaglr!
Good to know.
It breaks the MAIN game, not the extra post-game stuff.
Trust me, you'll be fine.
Tiger Pit information:
Number of times it Can Be Increased (Maximum of 9 Times per Run)
Single Ability: ((?)Ability / 10) - 1
Double Ability: ((?)Ability 1 + (?)Ability 2) / 20 - 1
The Amount the Ability will Increase
This is based on the floor which you leave the dungeon at. Because it resets after you leave the dungeon, the total floors are worthless. The difficulty and enemy levels are also unrelated to this.
Single Ability: Current Level of Ability * (the floor number you escape at ? 100)
Double Ability: Current Level of Ability * (the floor number you escape at ? 200)

Q Q Q Q Q Q
Q Q Q < Q Q
Q Q Q Q Q Q
Q Q Q Q Q Q
Q = = = = = =
X Q T Q Q Q
X D M < Q Q
X B H K Q Q
X Q Q Q Q Q
X = = = = = =
X Q T Q Q Q
X D M < Q Q
X B H K Q Q
X Q Q Q Q Q
X = = = = = =
Btw: OHKO = One Hit KO
Same thing here.
a serious investment of time but... I've always been rewarded before
glad it's on psp less of an investment in $$
It actually seems a lot less time-sucking as the Disgaea games.
I guess what I'm asking here is, can I buy it from the PSN Store and play it on my PS3? That is what I'd like to do, since I don't own a PSP.
If I can't do that, then I can honestly say "fuck Sony," because that would be fucking ridiculous and stupid to the nth degree.
No, there is not a PSP emulator on the PS3.
