Gonna be honest here, even GFWL is better than Gamespy
Fuck you Randy Pitchford
Hey now
That's just not true
It is. Gamespy is shittier than Live.
GameSpy at least has integration within the game and doesn't require you to use a shittily designed client, or require an internet connection to use your saves, or require you to have the game open in order to patch it, or totally complicate the process of joining or inviting someone else to your game
GameSpy just doesn't work half of the time, and has shitty netcode the other half of the time
Can anyone buy anything through the website? I keep getting an error and I an waiting to install the client now.
RE: Bloody good time, I enjoyed the ship although it was a beast to install off my old laptop, best part was watching someone come at me and nailing them with a flare gun and watching them run off on fire.
edit: Hey, does anyone know where I can get a wallpaper of that background from the "ABOUT" page on the website?

Ok every once in a while this complaint comes up, and when I see it I have to say this. I worked for GameSpy for a few years, they provide middleware, and it is up to the developers to implement it well. THOUSANDS of games use GameSpy software, and 90% of the time when it is implemented well nobody knows any better, hell most games that use GameSpy software don't even list it on the box or have a "powered by" logo at startup. Did you know that the stat tracking software in GTA4 and RDR is GameSpy tech? GameSpy provides tools for developers to use, and frankly if a developer does a piss poor job of using those tools why is it that GameSpy get's blamed? I'm sick of hearing it when thousands upon thousands of other games have no problem, but occasionally a developer uses their ass to try to jam a round peg into a square hole and all the blame get's leveled on GameSpy.
Because when games (such as Borderlands) ask us to log in to a Gamespy thing, it makes sense to us to blame Gamespy when the online features don't work as well as we'd like.

So on the rare occasion that a developer slaps their logo on the intro and it doesn't work because they didn't implement the code correctly, it's GameSpy's fault, but nobody cares about the thousands of games that quietly use their middleware and work fine? Borderlands on the PC was a buggy piece of shit out the gate, give credit where credit is due.
Sorry, but if Gamespy puts their name on it they get some of the blame
Plus, I remember having to use Gamespy Arcade
I can't speak for GameSpy or Gearbox here, but how do you know it was GameSpy that put their logo in Gearboxes game?
While GameSpy Arcade may be antiquated crap by today's standards, it served a stopgap purpose back in the day and wasn't that bad. I worked on the program for 2 years, people were fairly happy with it at the time.
Gamespy doesn't (to my knowledge) fuck any single player games.
I'm not sure what you are saying, are you defending me or being sarcastic?
I believe he's referring to GFWL, which has a nasty tendency to eat savegames. Sometimes it's an issue with it encrypting savegames in weird ways, or trying to save games in different locations depending on whether your same account is actually connected to the internet at the minute or not. And sometimes they'll just disappear or die for no apparent reason at all (my experience with Gears of War PC).
IIRC some people have also been having issues with Steam's cloud saves. So far that system's only worked smoothly for me, so I can't really comment on that.
He could also be talking about other things like the fact that offline mode can be a little hit and miss with Steam if there are updates pending. Again, can't comment on that personally since offline mode has usually worked fine for me when I've had to use it in recent years.
Neither. GFWL is in single player games, whereas any problems associated with GameSpy would be limited to Multi Player games right?
I wasn't making a judgement of GameSpy because I don't think I've ever played a GameSpy game multiplayer before, or I don't remember having any problems if I did.
Edit: What subedii said, but not just saving, all the other problems with GFWL.

That's the thing, GameSpy isn't just multiplayer stuff, it's middleware that's inside and out of some games used for all kinds of stuff, like the examples I gave earlier where all the stat tracking in GTA4 and RDR is done with GameSpy software. That's stat tracking in the sense of everything you do in the game, the stats that are shown to you every time you pause, not just online K/D stats.
It seemed fine for SWAT 4, which is one of the last games I remember actually making explicit usage of it.
Personally I don't think I've ever had any issues with Gamespy, but then I wasn't trying to play Borderlands when it released, which is where most of the anger at it seems to come from these days.
That's a lot, but let me give you an idea for GameSpy. There was a hall in our office with large framed movie poster sized collages. Each collage was filled with roughly postage stamp sized box shots of games. So imagine around 3 to 5 posters lining a hall with hundreds of game boxes on each chronicling all of the games that use GameSpy tech in some form or another. Games for every system, PC, console, and handhelds, from all parts of the world, USA, Europe, Japan, etc.
To toss a coin into the "Steam isn't actually working at all for me right now" pot, it well, isn't really working at all for me right now. The only thing I can do, rather humorously, is Friends. The Store, News, and Community home pages don't load in Steam for me at all. Trying to launch a game shoots a "This game is currently unavailable" error.
I've tried all of the standard Steam troubleshooting steps and still nothing.
I get this error with a corrupted install of a game. Try verifying the cache to see if anything is missing.
Shattered Horizon and Lead and Gold will be free to play this coming weekend (Nov 4-7) as part of the Frontier Free Weekend. They'll also be offered together as a bundle for $12.49

Primarily the former. You know, to keep it from getting snagged on something in the middle of a game. Not that that is a huge problem 99.99% of the time, but I suppose "extreme" gamers really care about that .01%.

So by the end of the month, it'll will have been 12 years since Half-Life 1 and 6 years since Half-Life 2. I hope Valve announces something for the Anniversary.

It amazes me that moron developers will still use shit like Gamespy
I'm looking at you, Gearbox!
Could be worse. They could've decided to GFWL up.

At midnight, I turned out all the lights and sat down with my headphones on at a healthy volume, for my first ever run through the Shalebridge Cradle.
My report on the experience:

Jeebus christ, this is one series that deserves the remakes. Funfunfunfunfun
Hard to decide between them. It's like comparing rotten worm riddled apples to mouldy dried up oranges.

I didn't specifically work on the programing side of things. Back when GSA was out I was a mere [Helper] doing live support from within the service.
Yeah that's right
No one ever interviews GameSpy

Telltale made the recent episodic series, 'Tales of Monkey Island'.
LucasArts developed Monkey Island 2.
