    Equipment Questions;

Is it best to arm yourself with the Anti-Materiel Rifle and Boone with the Sniper Rifle? I get the feeling that if both of us had the Anti Materiel Rifle the RoF would be too slow to work properly.

I'm up to my 39th hour on my Very Hard and Hardcore run. None of the remaining perks interest my tastes so I am just using my last few to buck luck up a bit so I can gamble with a bit more confidence.

Jesus christ this game is massive compared to Fallout 3. I'm still discovering side quests ( both recorded in your log and not ) and each one has been interesting and worth doing. Currently I have abandoned my companions to do a little solo exploring. I have a feeling that will change when I find a dangerous location to explore. I'm finding way more incidental texts around too. Stuff that has no real bearing on the situation at hand but fleshes out the world incredibly.

The amount of work that has gone into predicting player interaction before certain events is mind boggling. Sure, there are still occasions where people talk to me and I have no choice to react in a way that seems like I have met them before. But there have been countless times where a conversation starts and I think to myself " oh, but I've already done / killed / talked to that person / objective " and lo and behold, I get the option to say so.

From a quest standpoint, the game is quite massive. From a landmass stand point, it feels quite a bit smaller than FO3 (though I won't say whether or not it really is, because I don't know...it just feels a lot smaller).

That's okay though, because so much is packed in to the are that it doesn't matter. All it really means is that I haven't found myself having to travel 30 minutes to get to the other side of the wasteland.

I'll say this much, I sometimes I get a little depressed when I'm walking around and see a big building off in the distance and...oh wait, it's still just the NCR correctional facility, because I can still see it from here.

I think that NV is indeed smaller than FO3.

I was pretty disappointed when I realized that about half of the map is... well nothing.

I really hope they use DLC to open the west past the mountains. It really seems stupid to even have that on the map considering you can't get there.

Never mind the massive real estate loss to the east with the river, and the fact that you can't access a majority of it at all.

I was a little annoyed when I realised that a lot of the map you can scroll over is in fact unreachable but it more than made up for it with the sheer amount of locations to visit. I know there is not thaaat many more than Fallout 3 but it does a great job of making you think so.

I miss traversing the metro system under DC though. Sure they were generic tunnels for the most part but finding a door to the surface and having no idea what you would encounter when you got up there?

    That I enjoyed.

The fact that it is a desert works in its favor. I grew tired of digging around ruined homes in the Capital Wasteland only to find they were there to fill in gaps in the scenery. With New Vegas if you discover a location in the desert it more often than not is something interesting.

Personally, I'd give Boone the Anti-Material Rifle simply because the slow RoF will make it so you get a few kills in here and there while he keeps making people dissolve into grape jelly.

fellout << removes orange tint from world, is awesome. >>
Colored pip boy map < does what says and adds new markers,,, its worth it. >>
PIPware < the status page displays ALL info in hardcore, not clicking around all food slp and h2o in one handy page with the pipboy doll >

Speaking of ED-E. Someone tell me, should I stumble upon him in the normal course of play, or do I need to go out of my way to find him? Try and keep the answer spoiler free if possible.

You find him in a place most people will go through during the story, but hes not directly in your path.

And don't make the mistake I made; the person who says you can have him doesn't actually *give* ED-E to you. You have to repair it first. This was doubly confusing for me because the person I talked to was not in his usual building where he keeps ED-E, so I had to go back and find it despite the fact that I had the "ED-E My Love" quest in my inventory.

    My recommended mods:
Realistic Death and Dismemberment Physics (does what it says)
Fellout New Vegas (fixes lighting, removed murky brown tint, adds some basic weather)
Depth of Field (adds fairly subtle DoF)
Light Step ED-E (stops ED-E tripping mines, because he's a floating robot)
Companion Dress-Up (can remove and give all clothing and equipment from/to companions)
D3D9 dll for ATi (reworked version of the previous 'awesome perf fix' dll for ATi cards)
Companion Sandbox Mode (companions wander about the area you're in and do things like sitting and skinning nearby corpses)
NMC's Full Texture Pack (makes the game look extremely pretty compared to the default shitty textures)
HDR Pipboy (high res texture for the Pipboy, much like the original, just higher res and weathered)
High Res Prewar Books (does what it says on the tin)
What's Your Brand (high res cigarettes and cartons)
Distant Gunfire Fix (fixed gunshots going suddenly very quiet after a certain distance)
MTUI (shrinks the font used in the UI, and enlarges the dialogue text box)

    I fucking love mods.

These all sound amazing. Are all of them compatible with current save games? I'm kind of loathe to start over since it'd be the fifth time :P

They're all totally compatible with existing savegames.

Edit: It should be noted that some of them (like NMC's texture pack) are on Fallout 3 Nexus, not New Vegas Nexus. In general, mods that only replace textures and/or models will work without modification in New Vegas and just need smacking into the right directory.

I've been exploring the map hardcore and haven't really started any quests in the Strip at all. Now I'm level 26 (?), trying to do my companion quests and I'm starting to get rather annoyed by bugs/ design. Most of them are pretty interesting in terms of dialog despite this though more companion reaction/dialog would be so much sweeter.

    Boone
An absolute monster because he usually kills anything before they get into melee range.

The part I'm struggling with him is the fact that his quest is triggered by other quests and if you didn't do them with him in your party, you aren't going to do his quest (and there isn't really any way to take note of this progress either).

In spite, I gave him a centurion headgear and it is hilarious. He has this permanent crosseye'd look

    Lily
DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME DEARY, GRANDMA KNOWS HOW TO STAY QUIET every 20-30 seconds can be annoying. She has one of the more useful perks for my stealth character but has no upgrades and doesn't seem to use any good weapons/armor either =\

Anyone want to help me with Boone's quest?

Ok, so here's the current mod premise:

2 bunkers located in the wastes, the player finds a note during his adventure that opens the quest up. You travel to one of the bunkers, inside is a nice little dungeon that is defended by robots of all types. There's a couple terminals that will have hints and emails talking about a new experimental suit of power armor. As well as a VR training terminal to train testers in the use of power armor (ALTERNATE TRAINING!).

Wastelander works his way to the bottom of the scientific bunker, and gets a new and unique suit of power armor. As well as one final hint about the second bunker.

You go there, and its be inhabited by either Khans, Super Mutants, or Nightkin, I haven't decided yet. Same kind of experience, working your way down, hacking terminals learning things. At the bottom will be an armory guarded by some kind of mini-boss. With a unique weapon of some sort.

Sound good? Yeah it's just a kind of dungeon crawling, but in NV those are kinda fun.

MTUI (changes the UI to make the text smaller and the windows bigger, very good)
URLWNV (I'm at work and can't remember if this is the right acronym. It takes the camera filters off. There's another mod called "Fellout" which does something similar and I'm not exactly sure what the difference is)
Veronica Fix (Veronica doesn't level up with the player like other companions as of right now, this fix fixes that)
Multiple followers mod (can't remember the exact name. It makes the game too easy but screw it, I like tooling around with my posse)
CONELRAD (adds an awesome new radio station. I recommend the hell out of this one)

Is this the one where you get to pick the songs it plays? I've been meaning to get it for some time now. The song selection in Vegas is too limited.

This is the mod that lets you play your own MP3's through the radio station interface, with all the perks that come along with it (like the music getting quieter when people are talking).

Yay, many thanks good sir. I finally get to choose what kind of music I want. It's odd having "Johnny Guitar" in the background while fending off a horde of cazadors.

Boone has another quest later on, he'll start opening up to you more in conversation as you wipe out more Legion outposts, and eventually you get a quest to go confront his past.

I think every companion has a quest related to them after you've already recruited them.

I love the moments in Fallout when you feel scared out of your wits, because, well, you're some random going out into a nuclear wasteland, there should be moments where you're scared.

Man just go for the slots

From what I can tell you lose less often, even at a lower luck level, and the biggest wins can be made on them

God I love that guy. His voice-acting is top-notch.

Communist ghosts what don't know they're dead!

Laughed my ass off at this (approximation only):
"I told them a chupacabra did it. They told me the brahmin had been shot to death, so that's when I told them it was a chupacabra with guns. That's when they got real quiet, because they knew they were in big trouble."

I think there is an adult filter on the new vegas nexus search. In any case there aren't THAT many nudie mods, there's just the one popular one that I've seen.

Does anyone have recommended mods? I'm currently using:

My recommended mods (that you don't already have):
Bullet Time Mod (allows you to spend your APs on slo-mo mode)
Sprint Mod (allows you to spend your AP on sprint)
AutoSaverNV (Saves automatically to a new file every 10 minutes)
Centered 3rd Person Camera (centers the 3rd person camera, and lets you zoom out farther)
Companion Sandbox Mode (your companions will wander around doing stuff while waiting; better than just sitting there)
No Karma Loss for Stealing (I dislike murdering an entire Khan base, looting the bodies, then people hating me for grabbing stuff in the room of the people I JUST KILLED)
Sorter (Changes the names on items, so they'll be sorted. Eg, dog meat is called FOOD: Dog Meat, so it'll be with all the other FOOD items)
Run Speed Glasses (because the game makes you run too freaking slow. I'm willing to be a cheater to save 20+ hours of my life not waiting on my slow ass character)
