I've talked to several designers now who absolutely hate the pen tool in Photoshop and Illustrator, so much so that they've never really learned how to use it. Granted, it's not the most intuitive tool and has the greatest learning curve.... but what do you guys think about it?
I struggled with it at first, but it's second nature now.
I kind of hate the pen tool. Not initially drawing with it so much as going back in and trying to fine tune. I'm always losing handles and augh it turns me into a virtual space Mr. Bean.
Yeah the pen tool can be annoying at times, with handles no being able to be selected etc,
or the fact when you convert ot add a point, it makes a loop because the handles are in opposite direction.
The real trick is knowing the hotkeys and modifiers it makes everything so much better.
I certainly understand the hatred of the pen tool sentiment though.

Ok, since you two and Iruka have requested this, I wasted my evening tonight by compiling my paintover crits for the last 4 years. Considering what a pain in the ass it was hunting them all down, I really wish you dudes had just paid attention to them the first time. :P

This is me using the Pen tool. I ignored it for a long time but use it regularly now.
That being said I don't do much vector stuff.
