Pretty late, but if there was such a thing as post of the year I would nominate this one.
I agree. So I made a gift for him, in the form of a painting. I tried to integrate everything I've learned so far from reading his wonderful critiques.
Opinions? But don't be a dickhead telling me I should "work on ______". Only compliments.
EDIT: I made sure I didn't use black, because my art teacher told me that there is no black in nature.
You know, that picture prompted me to look at where I was a few years ago, and one of the earliest things I could find on my photobucket was this (I was on a Halo-based forum):
Made in December of 2006. It's refreshing to see where I've come from; it makes those small, incremental improvements seem a bit bigger.
EDIT: I made sure I didn't use black, because my art teacher told me that there is no black in nature.
I'd like to ask them what color they'd consider space, or deep caves. "Dark blue"? "Very dark grey"?
I'm pretty sure that black is the entire absence of light, and I'm not sure how you'd have any light in the middle of an underground, unlit cave.
But then I'd just be arguing their stupidly-worded statement, and not the main point - not to use black - which is still stupid. There are times when it works, or is even necessary, depending on what you're doing, and what you're trying to accomplish. I rarely use it, because I don't believe you should have to use it very often (don't use it as a crutch, as Bacon said) but I mean...(like Bacon also said) using it shouldn't be against the rules - many, many artists have used black throughout the ages, and it's worked extremely well.
But just saying "there's no black in nature" makes me want to bang my head against the wall. You could make the argument "people don't look like that" to Picasso, or "those colors aren't correct" to Monet, or any other number of "nature doesn't look like that" arguments...but hell, we're creating art, and we can't paint with light, and due to the limitations of our mediums, if we're even trying to paint something realistically, black is sometimes helpful, if not necessary.
And that's what I'd tell your teacher. Telepathically. While I seethe in the back of the classroom.
Thanks for the rant, ND. But I was actually joking. Did you see the picture? I know that argument is one of the things that Bacon resents more than anything else.

No, I totally saw the picture, and knew you were joking. But I've had art teachers say that before, and heard of other art teachers saying that, and it just bugs me.
I've haven't had an art teacher since kindergarten. I feel like I've been able to avoid some of the bull they feed to unknowing kids, and I'm thankful for it. There may be good art teachers out there, but there are a lot more bad ones.
I had a high school art+graphic design teacher who would always go on and on about how we were obnoxious kids and how she was a professional and has done professional level work for decades, or something.
And there was one day when I told her the printer in the classroom was out of magenta ink, and how she argued with me that "there's no magenta ink in printers! It's PURPLE" and proceeded to call up the tech department and ask for more printer ink.
"...what do you mean you don't have any purple ink!?!"
I've always thought that telling a class "don't use black" is like telling them not to draw anime eyes on everything.
Because when you're starting out, most people have a preconceived notion that all shadows are created by adding black to the existing color, and forcing them to use anything but black breaks them of that habit.
Saying black doesn't occur in nature is p retarded tho

Nice, I always enjoy looking at artists old works, kind of makes it less magical and more like a skill you can get better at if you work really hard at it. Then I draw some crappy anime and imagine it's all about talent again

I'm looking at a book by Burne Hogarth for the first time since...my freshman year of high school maybe. I remember his drawings as being insanely complex and intimidating.
But looking at it now, it's not so bad. I think I could learn a lot from this.
e: I swear to god, it seems like a lot of art books have an invisible 'level requirement' to use them.
Your art skill is not high enough to make full use of this text.
Also I need music.
But do not know to what I wish to listen.
Also also I am bummed that amazon wants ~$500 for an intuos 4 large.
Question; what recreational drug should I take before going to see Harry Potter this evening? I don't know what would be best.
LSD if you want to follow the plot a little. Mushrooms if you want to be giggling like a little girl the entire time.
Ketamine if you hate harry potter. Mescaline if you don't even want to watch a movie, you just want to wander around the theatre looking at the patterns in the carpet.
Fucking hell. My friend helped me dye my hair red again tonight, using the exact same method I always use, with the same product and color I've used the last two times. The length of my hair looks great, but it didn't take to my roots AT ALL. Son of a fuck. I'm going to need to buy more tomorrow and try to redo them and hope it takes the color. :x I have no idea why this happened - it's never happened before, and I didn't do anything different. The difference isn't horrifically obvious, but it's obvious to me.
WHYYYYYYYYYYY
Goddammit, and I told work that I wanted to work after 10am or 11am on Wednesday, because they told everybody they could pick their shifts, and they're having me go in at 8 fucking a.m. and gave the 11am shift to a girl named Jenna. FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUU ANGRY
It's a medium. I'm finding it to be the perfect size - I suspect I'd end up limiting the working area if I ended up with a L like I originally planned.
For me, its the only place to be! Im at my GFs parents home now.... I got here in the middle of the night, nobod knows Im here, Im half expecting that someone is gonna wake up and think im a robber.

Also suddenly I fear ND.

The picture is hilarious, though.

I usually check this page of old AC art as a pick me up, seeing how much people improve over time is pretty inspiring: http://iseenothing.com/artchive/ (some really nice photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/wieclawek as well).

WOO HOO!!!
What a coincidence. I'm in the market for a medium possibly.
Woo~! Japan is a good place to be, right?
There is not enough kool aid in the whole universe. That's about all I have to say about that.
