I've never seen his show before, but now I'm tempted to pick up the Christmas special after seeing some of the musical numbers.
you've never watched the colbert report? what?
anyways the colbert christmas special: the greatest gift of all is pretty good, but what makes it imo great is the song I linked
since pretty much every other song in the special is varying degrees of ironic or funny it really makes this song all the more poignant
also it really expresses my opinions about what I feel about people who like to shit all over christmas (the "DEM NON CHRISTIANS ARR TRYIN' TO MAKE WAR ON CHRISTMAS!!!" crowd and the "HOW DARE YOU WISH ME MERRY CHRISTMAS!" crowd)
It's like, if you're not christian that's totally cool with me, whatev's bro, but if you're seriously going to make a federal fucking issue out of the one holiday out of the year that's about not treating people like shit you're pretty much a shitty human being
also if you ARE a christian and honestly think there is a war on christmas you need your fucking head examined

My wife thinks Hobby Lobby may have good paper... but we're in japan so it's been awhile. She also recommends checking the major department stores.
Ooh. There's one of those not too far from where I go shopping. I'll check that out this weekend too. Tell her I said thanks!
Also, Japan? Are you sitting on a geek merchandise goldmine? :P
If I get Dyvion as my Santee I'm just going to buy him stuff from play-asia just to make him mad. "Here's some toys that you can get in gumball machines there!"
edit: Man now I'm going to sink an hour looking at awesome little Mario toys on play-asia.
Yamada Denki has these cell phone charms in small boxes, and you don't know which one you're buying, but they have everything from Monster Hunter (I have a tigrex on my cell phone) to various anime girls to miniature giant robots. One of the things I'm going to do is stalk my santee, find out what they're into, then buy them 5 or 6 of these cell phone charm things, and ship them off. There may be some doubles or whatever, but it's like opening a booster back for a CCG, you never know what you're going to get, and that's the fun part.
e: clarifying, that's not the -only- thing I'm going to do.

C'mon folks, if you're on the fence then get off it, put on your santa hat and join in!
For reals.
Get festive!

This man is correct! After two or three years of fence sitting because of worry and anxiety, I finally jumped off on the awesome side. Now I'm feeling great. And maybe a little hyperactive. Sorry about that. :P Even if you don't think you can spare enough money to do something awesome, a lot of the small/awesome touches you can put on a package are either low-cost or nearly free:
-Stocking Stuffer type items can be pretty cheap and can help to create that "box of loot" feeling. The easiest of which is candy, but you can probably find some cheap things related to your santee's interests.
-Come up with an interesting way to pack your box. A cool presentation can jack the awesome level way up
-A personalized letter is a really nice touch. Especially if it does something creative or has been hand written. Some examples from past years that have stuck in my mind are a coded letter in the glyphs from Dead Space and a letter that had been shipped from the zombie apocalypse.
-Are you talented? Artistic? Make something! Handmade gifts can usually trump store-bought things for most people... unless it's a sweater made from your own hair. That's just weird.
Edit:
A few other things I remembered for getting the most christmassy bang for your buck. Amazon has craaaazy timed sales on everything (especially games) all Thanksgiving Week long. Steam usually starts their crazy thanksgiving sale that Monday, too if your santee is a PC gamer. And then another at Christmas if you don't want to give your identity away too early.
On wrapping paper: I'll be getting mine from Dollar General. ahaha
It is the only place within walking distance that sells it. (This santa doesn't drive, but fear not Santee, for the post office is also within walking distance!) And c'mon, crappy paper still gets the job done.
With fancy paper, I'd feel more guilty about cutting it poorly, and about doing a sloppy wrapping job.
Hair sweater, bleh.
I seem to recall that AaronKI prefers overly-festive Christmas sweaters, anyway.
AaronKI, I'd just like to say that you have the best avatar ever. It's even better with the Santa hat.
Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better after having a pretty demoralizing class today. Santees haven't even been assigned yet and the SS thread is already working it's magic.
Also, I finally broke down and made a lego wishlist. I'm weak. :P
Edit: In my dream world, Bioshock lego sets would exist. More Dragon Knight buildings, too, but wikipedia suggests that the chance is slim since they've been planted in the "Attacker" role. Judging from the prison tower, though, their buildings have a more interesting style. Ah well. I'll just cross my fingers and wait for the new 2011 sets to be announced.

I used to wrap presents in like 5 layers of wrappings, with materials ranging from notebook paper to duct tape. Opening my gifts was half the fun!

hey dont knock those. i sent a pantload of those to Mr.Heist, (a few years back) and he loved the hell out of them.
Oh ma. If people need a bunch of little doodads to fill out their package, then Five Below is an awesome place to go. They have a ton of cool toys and figures and stuff and a bunch of other crap that's pretty great for stocking stuffer type gifts.
I got a little Lego Racer thing for $3, and they had like Transformers for $5, some Mighty Muggs for $5, and all kinds of other stuff, like video game accessories, and some games even.

I just got home and on my way here I was listening to the Charlie Brown Christmas cd. And it made me realize that this thread needs more Charlie Brown Christmas.
Doc: I just started listening to your church's album (somehow I missed it before LewieP's mum said something). I really like their version of Angels We Have Heard On High.
One of these days, I need to make a giant shuffled Christmas playlist with a few thousand of my favorite Christmas songs on it. :P

Those are really cool.
Hmm. 4 dollars. This might have to get bought and put on the ipod.
I joined up despite being broke as shit. The gift doesn't have to be super-expensive to be awesome, you just have to put some thought into it to make it good (and at least reach the minimum of US$20). Also, you can always try to make something awesome if you're good at crafts. Lots of neat stuff gets made and given away here every year. People sculpt statues, make paintings, they mod Nerf guns and light guns into cool stuff, I think somebody made loaves of bread or something... there are a lot of things you can do.
(Or if you're hopeless at crafty stuff like me, just sell some old junk and put a little cash aside--I do need to buy gifts for my family at the very least as well as my Santee. I own way too much crap and needed to thin it out, so it works well for me, but I realize it might not work for everybody.)
I've recorded most of my game collection on Backloggery and I use Steam a lot. I saw the discussion about Lego, so I'll say that I am not at all opposed to getting some of that, despite having large amounts already.
Also, it'd be nice if someone would put a hat on Kirby.
My favorite comic book heroes are Deadpool, Green Lantern and Thor, I prefer Star Trek to Star Wars (I'm a Next Generation Guy myself), I love little japanese toys and statues, action figures, and I currently own a 360 and a DS. I've got a bunch of 360 games, and I used to have a lot of DS games but they were all stolen except my Pokemon Heart Gold.
Man. Just got back from doing a bit of shopping (came back pretty much empty-handed). The city is already a madhouse and it's only the first week of November. Nightmarish traffic, terrible drivers everywhere, you could barely move around in stores, etc.
I think it's time to switch to online shopping mode. :P
Hobby Lobby Report: The have oodles of neat Christmas items. Maybe 9 or 10 aisles full. The good news is that they have lots of heavy duty wrapping paper. The bad news is that it's pretty pricey. $8 for 480 inches vs. wal-mart's super-thin $1 rolls with 190 inches.

This is the one thing that can turn me from happy to angry in seconds. I went out shopping today too with my fiance and people suck at driving. I already honked furiously at some old woman who decided she wasn't going to take turns at the 4 way stop. And that's already after the woman in front of her decided to go out of turn.
On the bright side, I got a chance to check out a five below. Someone previously mentioned it in here and wow that is a cool store. I plan to go back for my Santee to get a few things, but just today I bought a lego racer, a lego octopus which was part of the Atlantis set which were both 3 dollars, a craft set for my niece for 3 dollars, and I saw a copy of roller coaster tycoon 2 with the expansion for 5 bucks that I had to get for myself. They even had RCT3 for 5 bucks, but I prefer the older ones. But yeah, awesome store.
