Quick Question About Xbox 360 Controllers

Just a quick question, I've been wanting to purchase an Xbox 360 controller for use on my PC, specifically a wired one so I don't have to go about the hassle of purchasing batteries once in a while, and my room isn't very big anyway.

I know there are the white ones that says Xbox 360 Controller for Windows, but I've also seen black wired ones, which I think are aesthetically more pleasant. However, these black ones don't come with the "for Windows" thing and I'd like to ask the kind folks of Penny Arcade as to whether you guys know if the black ones will work, or if any wired Xbox 360 controller will work for the PC. Thanks!

Doesn't matter. Any official wired controller for the 360 should work on Windows. If you have Vista or 7 you won't even need to set anything up.

What's even better is being able to use the Xbox 360 headset plugged into your controller as a mic.

The xbox 360 headset is pretty shitty though... still I guess if you are going to be using the controller its convenient. (I use a usb based 3D headset with mic, it was less than $50 on sale)

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

If I remember correctly the "games for windows" versions of the controllers had the drivers in the controller, so when you plugged it into winXP or earlier it would just work, rather than having to download the driver.
As already mentioned this shouldn't be necessary in win7.

This is tangentially related - I have a PC 360 gamepad, and the d-pad is starting to shit out. Does anyone know if that new version of the pad with the dpad that turns and locks down will be available for PC?

It will work, as the all do, regardless. They all use the USB HID spec.
Internally they just do further refinements as regards die size/manufacturing processes:
