It's old and not used anymore.
But there's nothing really wrong with it because regardless of socket if you wait a long enough time to upgrade a new socket will be in use.

The Core 2 Quad processors have been replaced by the Core i5 and i7.

In common parlance with the community and hobby it's considered a dead-end and obsolete. Stock is running down as well and they're more expensive than the current line so there's not really any reason to buy one. When Intel introduces a new architecture they're generally better in nearly every way. The old processors aren't bad, they still do a good job, but there's little reason to get one. An AMD chip would be preferred if you're looking for something cheap.
In the case that you're looking to build a new PC I agree. But if you don't want to throw down money for a new mobo and a new processor, LGA 775 still has processors that will run just about anything.
Speaking of processors, I was looking at motherboards and a lot of them boast the ability to unlock cores on quad-core chips being sold as dual-core for QA or market demand reasons. Anyone want to relate success / fail anecdotes?
Don't buy one of these motherboards and a dual core processor and think you're going to be able to unlock it as a quad core. It works, sometimes, sometimes you only get one more usable core, sometimes you get two more. But it's not very reliable and varies from batch to batch of chips.

Instead of spending 200-300 on a quad core you won't get much benefit out of it may be wiser to spend 400 on an upgrade to get a new motherboard, processor and RAM.

Yeah I was planning on getting a cpu and mobo(it doesn't have ddr3, and has been giving me issues). Its just that I didn't upgrade my other parts either (such as my hdd). So now everything caught up with me at once
