Every genre of music has examples of why that genre is good and examples of why that genre is horrible.

    i'll just leave this here:
Flatt & Scruggs - Cripple Creek
Doc Watson is magical, and the little interactions with his son are adorable.
Doc & Merle Watson - Black Mountain Rag
why aren't you fucks clapping?! i would have burst into applause in that audience!
Doc Watson - Deep River Blues
Bill MAWN-roe, as my grandpa always says.
    Bill Monroe - Southern Flavor
as for more modern groups; country-tinged rather than straight-up bluegrass, but still good.

Boxharp: Ventura Whites and Church in Calhoun are two i really like.

The Handsome Family: i'm unfortunately not so impressed with the live versions, which is kind of a killer for this genre, imo. i don't know if the guy is surly with the audiences, but his delivery seems almost mocking; the studio cuts seem more appropriate -- soft and sorrowful.
    Handsome Family - Weightless Again
Handsome Family - Up Falling Rock Hill -- that old classic, the murder ballad!

The presence of a banjo and/or fiddle seems to be where you find the good stuff.

Is the answer frequently and wherever the fuck he wants?

    I love complicated melodies

and I love polyphonic textures in melodies

and bluegrass is the reigning champion in both of these fields.

Also the songs usually have really solid, emotive, driving chord progressions.
