Warm winter clothes

This month, I'll be in Tokyo. It's cold, and I bought a jacket for the appropriate temperature. However, an unexpected trip to Mt. Fuji came up and I won't miss out on it. I was told that Mt. Fuji is considerably colder than the city.

Is there something I can wear for that one time hike so I don't freeze? Or will I be fine if I layer my clothes?

I've been in cold weather maybe 4 times in my life, usually where I live the temperature never drops below 85.

Just layer. Undershirt, long sleeved shirt, sweater, jacket. Wearing a winter hat will help, too. As will gloves.

Don't forget wool socks, possibly with a pair of normal socks underneath. Cold toes can be so very unpleasant. Make sure you don't get the super-bulky type of wool sock since they probably would make your feet too cramped in your shoes (unless of course you already have shoes sized for thick socks!)

I have a traditional set of winter clothes, which I will list as if it were a recipe of sorts:

2x Bamboo Socks - sweat absorbant, no chills into your pores!
2x Comfy Sock - Whatever sock feels warm and fuzzy, put these on second.
1-2x Flannel Pajama Pant - MPG varies, but putting these on beneath regular pants keeps warmth tucked in.

That's all I wear. That, and my lucky bandana.

Never underestimate a pair of warm socks and high shoes or boots.

Yeah, overall you should be ok with layers. Don't be afraid to put on a lot of layers. It's much better to be in a situation where you are too hot and have to remove a layer or two than being in a situation where you are too cold and don't have more layers.
