So the other night I was messing around on my PS3 and started wondering about Sony's handheld option. I know very little about the lineup and weather or not its even worth the money for one. Ideally I'm looking for something to keep me busy on long boring days sitting around the office or wherever when I don't have anything else going on.
I've got an itch to buy a PSP, am I crazy? Is it worth it? What are some awesome games for it?
I just picked up a PSP last week, actually, and I've been playing a lot of Dissidia and Zettai Hero Project. Both are very fun. There are quite a few demos up on the PSN as well, so you can find something you want, I'm sure. I've played something like ten different demos in the past two days, and my wallet is preparing for the oncoming storm.
The Fifth Birthday thread's slipped a bit, but also a good deal of PSP related topics there too.
And from a personal standpoint, I'm very happy owning several PSPs. There were times in the beginning where the library wasn't quite up to par, but there are and continue to be some stellar titles released/releasing on the system.
If you've got any particular types of games you prefer/dislike, listing those might help others craft a convincing arguement for picking one up.

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
The PSP has a lacking library in terms of quanity compared to the NDS, but it still has quite a few awesome games that didn't make me regret purchasing it at all.
P3P, God of War, MGS, Lumines, Tekken, Soul Calibur and all those other niche games.
It's a pretty amazing console, despite all the terrible sales and the "PSP has no games" bullshit.
I'm a bit out of the loop as far as new PSP games go, but Tekken and Dissidia are the shit. Collectathon fighting games are some of the best things you can have on a handheld, I think.
Most of my recent PSPing has been playing PS1 Classics titles, though. Symphony of the Night, Street Fighter Alpha, Wild Arms 2, probably going to pick up some Final Fantasies at some point. Definitely worth it if that's something that appeals to you.
There's atleast 15 seriously epic games for the PSP. Not counting ps1 portability.
So it really depends if you want access to these, it's also reasonable for music/videos.
Looking at NDS/PSP game lists, I would never take an NDS over the PSP personally, though i'm not much of a fan of nintendos first party material.
I've bought two games for my PSP in the past two years (both bought within two months. Two). Kingdom Hearts: Pretentious Subtitle and Persona 3 Portable. They're both pretty great and I recommend them. It's just that if you want a PSP, you have to realize that you're stuck with a small pool of (relatively harder to find than other system's) games, and most of the best are either ports or spin-offs of console series. So if stuff like Metal Gear, God of War or Ratchet & Clank aren't your cup of tea you might as well just not waste your money. Though I can't imagine they aren't if you own a PS3. PS1 games off of PSN are nice, too. It's a shame, too because it could have been so much more.
Also a question for those with newer PSP's. Is the battery life any better for them? My old launch PSP only had about six hours of life in it in the best of times, and these aren't the best of times for it. I need to keep it plugged in if I want to play longer than an hour.

Yes, the battery in the 3000s is actually good
Also the screen is night and fucking day in comparison to the 1000s, it's quieter, and easier to hold, and the buttons feel better, and it's basically better in every way than the 1000
The only one I dug at all was Rock Band Unplugged, get that if you like music games
Though I guess a Valkyria Chronicles is out for it now, get that if you want your money to go to Satan (Sega), the die has already been cast in terms of them not continuing the franchise in its rightful place anyways
After two years of having it, I definitely don't regret it. I think I have around 37 games for the system.

I don’t and I’m still happy with my PSP (although it has been a long time since I played it). When I think of the games I’ve enjoyed the most, I think of stuff like Half-Minute Hero, Crush, Jeanne D’Arc and Killzone: Liberation. All original games that I found to be fairly cool and fairly unqiue. For all it’s faults, I still think the PSP has a decent library of games. Not great, but nowhere near as bad as some people say.
Had some time on the commute home, thought I'd do a very quick list from previous "PSP Recommendation" threads (did about 9 months or so):
(Note: I just compiled this roughly; I don't personally agree with all the listed games, however at least one person on this forum has recommended any title listed below. I'm also not particularly accurate, and may have missed some. Too bad, suck it up. :P)

on top of all the games recommendations here the psp also comes into its own as a portable media centre. with pspvideo9 you can convert videos for watching on holidays/ business trips (which you can then view on hotel TVs with a component cable). UMD films are dirt cheap too.
it really came into its own when my daughter was born. i'd be lying on the couch stuck under a sleeping baby for 4 or 5 hours unable to make any noise. MHFU, a load of converted anime and the ability to download comics off psn made that far more bearable.

Well, there's 2 Medal of Honor games, a Call of Duty, and a Brothers in Arms. Having only briefly played them, I would <opinion> at best call them mediocre, at worst call them utter drivel.</opinion> I mean, if you were really hankering a WW2 game, maybe you would find it ok.....
If you're willing to stretch the limits of your perception of WW2, you could count those alternate-reality/sci-fi titles like Valkyria Chronicles or Resistance: Retribution, which kind of start off in a WW2-ish setting before throwing in the white-haired magic chicks and drooling aliens.
Would you count Lego Indiana Jones, if he's punching Lego Nazis? :P
I own one and play it... ahh... what's less than rarely?
But seriously if you're considering it why not just wait till the PSP2 or whatever comes out? You've made it this long you might as well not cripple yourself by buying a console at the end of it's life cycle.
Bought mine two years ago, and that was pretty much at the end of it's life cycle too. :P
Well, there's a good chance that the PSP2 won't be backwards compatible, and new systems often lack stellar launch games, so it may be 2 or 3 years before he would want a PSP2. (Not to mention price issues.) Short term I would compare with the 3DS (assuming he doesn't have a DS) as that would be BC and thus would help mitigate launch game issues.
Anyways, the system is becoming a solid JRPG system (Parasite Eve 3, YS 7, Kingdom Hearts, etc.), but too much of it's other lineup centers around games that have much better console equivalents. Sony really needs to work on establishing big name portable franchises. Stuff like LocoRoco and Patapon are a start, but they have very little mainstream appeal.

Well I suggested the PSP2 because that way he owns one when/if good games come out. But yeah, I bet the PSP2 will not have backwards compatibility.
I haven't seen another thread on it so I guess this is as good a place to ask as any, and I apologize in advance to the OP for semi-jacking the thread:
Is invizimals worth looking into a PSP for? A friend of mine is looking to part with his and he has a few games but not many (God of War I think is the only notable one) but given that my girlfriend is on a pokemon kick I am wondering if invizimals is another worthwhile investment for it.
Last year I made the mistake of getting a PSP Go before knowing that several, good games for it just weren't coming.
So while I did get a regular PSP a month ago, I still have the Go, and it still has some games on it I downloaded.
Would it be possible to move all the games I downloaded onto a memory stick or two, and be able to play them from the normal PSP?
Each game has 3 or 5 (can't remember which) activations and you can deactivate games from a system as well I believe. I doubt you can just transfer with a memory stick, however you can redownload them.

Though getting SOCOM 3 for free is pretty akin to having someone kick you in the junk for free. :P
LBP and R&C are ok though, so not too bad.
And Rakai hit it on the nose, you shouldn't have much difficulty installing to your PSP non-Go, provided you've got the stick space. Might need to transfer saves from one to the other, if anything.
