So you hope they burn to the ground because of one of, or a combination, of the following:

    - canceling a game
    - passing on the series to another part of the company
    - loss of profit for one quarter
    - profit increase for the next because of Medal of Honor
    - Medal of Honor seems to have sold 2 million

    Hmmm.

    'Greed is good'?
I'm not seeing any lack of greed in their bleak list of unimaginative iterations. If they really were greedy, you'd think they'd learn to keep costs down and give their games actual selling points.

A business person does not know what is good for a game because they don't play games. All they see is the money that comes in and goes out developing these things. Expecting them to understand how to give a game good selling points, which = good game mechanics and fun is like expecting a fly to realize the first time they hit a window that it's a solid surface, in their way.

Shigeru Miyamoto doesn't play games, but Bob of Bob's game does. I think it's more that business people doesn't understand fun.

VC and Yakuza certainly did not have small development budgets. Not even close.

The last few Yakuza games did have small localization budgets which probably confused you.

Considering how much material you can comfortably port to the 3DS I really wouldn't worry about budgets on the thing. Smaller developers will just bring over their PS2/PSP/GCN/XBOX titles.

Sega reported profits on both games, so how exactly could that've happened if their budgets weren't small?

They wanted to overhaul the control scheme and make it more like the NHL series (left stick controls lower body, right stick for upper body). In doing so, they bit off more than they could chew, and the rest of the game suffered. They released a demo back in September, and reaction was abysmal. Now they're supposedly going to release roster/schedule updates for Live '10 and work toward making Elite '12 the one that competes with the 2K juggernaut.

Uh, it's not like SCOTUS is actively trying to 'fuck with' the games industry. They agreed to hear the arguments from two sides in a case so far undecided and make a ruling based on those arguments, as is their function.

You could say the state of California is trying to fuck with the games industry, though.

I'm honestly sort of fuzzy on the issue though, even after reading through the transcript. New York has a law which prohibits the sale of M-rated games to minors, doesn't it? I'm probably missing something, but I'm kinda confused as to what makes this new law in California different.

From what I've been able to gather, the difference is they're trying to ban "violent" video games, which leaves it open to way too much interpretation. I'm also under the impression, from a few parts of the transcript, that the judges were not particularly impressed by California's argument. But I can't say for sure seeing as I didn't read the whole transcript.

Really, I think California's case may have a made a bit of sense up until they resume questioning him at the very end.

There's a point where one of the Justices asks him if all the violence happens to Vulcan instead of a human, if that's okay according to the law and he says yes without even hesitating.

I don't have time to find the actual quote from the PDF but the Justice then goes to ask that if all a developer has to do is add some trivial artificial part to the victim in order to say he's not human in order to get by the law, and once again he seems to say yes pretty quickly.

It's confirmed, all violent games sold in the state California will now feature exclusively Vulcan characters.

I may be okay with this law.

Sotomayor: Would a video game that portrayed a Vulcan as opposed to a human being, being maimed and tortured, would that be covered by the act?

Morazzini: No, it wouldn't, Your Honor, because the act is only directed towards the range of options that are able to be inflicted on a human being.

Sotomayor: So if the video producer says this is not a human being, it's an android computer simulated person, then all they have to do is put a little artificial feature on the creature and they could sell the video game?

Morazzini: Under the act, yes, because California's concern, I think this is one of the reasons that sex and violence are so similar, these are base physical acts we are talking about, Justice Sotomayor. So limiting, narrowing our law here in California, there in California to violence — violent depictions against human beings.

Sotomayor: So what happens when the character gets maimed, head chopped off and immediately after it happens they spring back to life and they continue their battle. Is that covered by your act? Because they haven't been maimed and killed forever. Just temporarily.

Morazzini: I would think so. The intent of the law is to limit minors' access to those games.

    http://www.mcvuk.com/news/41613/Losses-slashed-at-EA
PS3 sales lead the way, offsetting Wii software collapse as EA continues to rebuild; Now leading HD games publisher

EA has announced a loss of $201m for the quarter ending September 30th 2010 – that’s nearly half the $391m loss the publisher reported in the same period in 2009.

The company now claims to be the No.1 publisher on HD platforms (PS3 and Xbox 360) with a total market share of 25 per cent so far in 2010. At this stage last year that number was just 23 per cent.

It was also the leading Apple App Store publisher in the period.

The PS3 was the firm’s leading light, with sales up seven per cent year-on-year. Sony’s console now accounts for 34 per cent of EA’s total sales. Xbox 360 game sales climbed one per cent, meaning the console won a 30 per cent share of EA’s total.

However, Wii software sales nose-dived by an astonishing 82 per cent, leaving Nintendo’s machine accounting for just six per cent of EA’s output. PS2 still accounts for three percent, ahead of PSP’s two per cent. The DS claimed just one per cent and mobile gaming six per cent.

Another big winner was digital, which EA says now represents 30 per cent of the entire games sector. Digital sales stood second only to PS3 in EA’s quarterly numbers, claiming 30 per cent.

“We had another strong quarter, beating expectations both top and bottom line,” EA CEO John Riccitiello stated. “We credit our results to blockbusters like FIFA 11 and to innovative digital offerings like The Sims 3 Ambitions and Madden NFL 11 on the iPad.”

Microsoft Corp. boosted its forecast for the Kinect motion-control device for the Xbox gaming system to 5 million units this quarter, making it the biggest Xbox accessory debut in terms of sales.

Based on pre-sales, retail orders and consumer interest, the company expects to exceed a previous forecast for sales of 3 million units, Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business, said in an interview today. The device, which lets players control games with motion and voice, goes on sale tomorrow.
