Is that actual shading I'm seeing there on the blocks, or am I crazy?
It's Ambient Occlusion.
It's from the MrMMod, found here and thread link here.
Reposting this from the old thread, since it's pretty cool stuff. I'm a bit suprised it hadn't been done earlier - it's an nice way of adding some extra flair to the graphics.
I was going to suggest adding Quandary to the list of texture packs in the OP but, after checking the site, it seems it doesn't quite work properly with the latest version. That's probably because it's a pack of 12 textures - one for each month - and doesn't work so well with the new biomes.
Edit: Checking the thread, I can see why the ambient occlusion hasn't been done before - it's not a standard SSAO implementation, it had to be a bit cleverer than that!
Not sure why he just didn't assign gates IDs and link them all together like that. That way gate1 would link with the nether gate1. Then it wouldn't need to make a new gate when you leave it just needs to look up where the other ID is. Sometimes I wonder why he does things the way he does.
Nobody is perfect..I think notch's ideas tend to be better than his code. I hope when he gets his company more together he gets some help with minecraft.

The strange behavior of portals wouldn't be so bad if it didn't take 3 minutes to take down an ill-behaved portal.
I think he should have made portals appear on the other side in the exact spot where they should despite the surroundings. If it would end up in a solid mountain then dig yourself out, if you end up over a lava pool watch your step. They could probably just remove any blocks within a 3 block radius and then spawn the portal in a cobblestone sphere, so no matter what you are safe until you break out of the stone. It may end up spawning an ugly sphere in your base if you aren't careful, but that seems like a pretty minor thing.
I expected to have more fun with this update, but the novelty of the nether wore off pretty quickly since there's no safe way to explore it and it's not easy to find your way back to your portal once you get lost...
what we really need is more things to do with redstone. Is there a reason he hasn't put floodgates or trapdoors in? that would be one of the first and most obvious things I'd have implemented. Some very fun drowning traps to be had...
So now that bimoes exist and I can have snow without being in some god-awful white wasteland: how do you harvest snow to make snowballs?
I punch it and it goes away, but I don't get anything..
Use a shovel and you will have more than you ever want.
Every freaking map I made was a white wasteland :P

So I got the coolest world yet. I have a huge lake with huge land bridges, lava flowing directly into the lake, and a couple shallow water caves where I've seen a few zombies hang out during the day. Even more awesome I can get to all of it and check out from my boat. I have some good ideas for this place.
Does water work if you're casting obsidian with lava and cobblestone in the Nether? Haven't found any obsidian and casting it to break it down just to take it into the portal sounds irritating. Was hoping to just use the large amounts of lava there.
Also, my portal created a portal in the Nether that no longer links back to my first portal, but rather to a portal quite a distance away and in another whole cave....... Now I gotta find my way back.
edit: nope, evaporates no matter what surface you are putting it on.

bring flint and steel and you can relight your portal. Happened to me in the Nether. That was a terrifying 10 minutes. Apparently, if the Ghasts hit your portal with their bomb it will disrupt your portal.
Freakin biomes... My portal from the nether doesn't link to the portal I took to get there, it goes to a new portal. So I'm digging my way up to get out and of course, water. No problem, I think, just follow it up and you'll hit the surface. Nope.
Snow biome so there's ice over the entire surface of the water. I didn't realize this of course and it's taking forever to break, and I drown. I lost so much iron that I had picked at the new portal and hadn't had a chance to deposit in a box yet.. New inventory staple - a box so I can unload precious materials as I find a safe passage home. Diamond pick, some gold, like half a stack of iron, a stack of coal.... Ugh.
edit: and torches melt ice. That's cool. Never new that before.
As far as I am concerned the map is now completely fucked and we gotta load up the last back up. This is the link to the map that I uploaded last night. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14282730/World5.rar Please install this, I have errands to run today and I won't be home until 4pm pacific time, and it is 10:50 right now.
The spawn was moved from it's position, and because of how BorderLands works, the map size increased from 50mbs to 140mbs. The spawn building is unfinished but it is a brick building with a wooden roof and a half block castle wall thing on top I don't have the word at this hour, on a tiny trio of islands near the center of the map. You will have to zoom in to see it. Here is the link again. I'm sorry but I tried to upload a picture of the map with the building pointed out but I just can't do it right now, the image isn't uploading and I have to go soon. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14282730/map5-day.png
People in the thread I set up in Social Entropy are trying to work on fixing the problem but the map is just too huge and we should probably just start over.
(BorderLands is still a good mod and we should keep it on the Social Entropy server, we just can't ever move the spawn again.)
EDIT: I probably set it up wrong last night because I was tired. In the BorderLands.txt change the number from 2200 to 1100.
I'll deal with it when I come home from running errands, the map is just so completely messed up that I just wanted to get it to a workable state for now.
I told people that I probably set up the borderlands mod incorrectly so they know that I asked you to change it from 2200 to 1100. If it is too small I will change it when I come home.
They also know to expect changes to the map between now and tomorrow so its ok.
The spawn is slightly off center and that is ok. If the borders change slightly, I can load up MCEdit myself and fix it, I just can't do it with my computer with the size that it is now.
No amount of wizardry on my part seems to work for Columbia, though.
If it's lighting that's an issue, don't forget that redstone and lava generate light. Might be worth stripping and re-applying those too.
I didn't do that on Rapture and it works fine. I brought Rapture with torches over, and it's unaffected.
I thought maybe the shadows on the field were the problem, so I deleted the field as a test. Didn't help either, so I undid that and removed Col from the map again.
I just started messing around with Minecraft and am surprised at how addicting it is for such a seemingly simple and graphically plain game. A bit like Civilization, which I can't allow myself to play often or I'll find myself looking up at the clock and realizing it is 2am on a work night.
I do wish I hadn't let myself look up some recipes and strategies so as to preserved that fresh exploration feeling longer, but sometimes I get bored putting what I think are logical combinations of items into the crafting window. I enjoy the building and exploring more.

fuck, i found out water evaporates on contact with those blocks, too. balls.
Next time keep a bucket of boiling [strike]oil[/strike] lava you can pour on invaders. Tis the proper castley thing to do. :P

Don't drink the water.
water, water everywhere ,but not a drop to drink
Should give me your save file. I keep trying to load in new SP maps to get large expanses of ocean with no success to speak of.

Thinking about making a transoceanic rail system.
My return portal ended up in a cave under the ocean
I stripped all the torches out of Rapture
And pasted it back into our multiplayer map.
It seems to be working for now.
Oddly, when I did that to Columbia, it didn't work.
I don't know what to make of that.
But, at least we have Rapture back for now. It is creepy as shit down here with no light.

And just to be clear this doesn't affect the lag bug that's still crippling the server, right?

okay, is this the occlusion mod? Waht does it do, create dynamic shadows that follow the sun's path or something? If so, awesome.
also makes that screenshot sexy.
