This is the sort of thing that Democrats need to fix on in messaging.

"You know what? We used to be a great country. Our infrastructure used to be one the world looked to with awe. Our educational systems were used as examples world-wide. But short-sighted greed has hurt us deeply. We are no longer asking ourselves 'What can we do for our country,' but instead, 'How can I get mine?' Our country has problems, and it needs solutions, and it needs sacrifices."

That's what the '08 campaign was. But Boomers and Gen X-ers are in charge, and neither of those generations can be bothered to sacrifice anything for the country.

I think we could fix some long term problems, but first we need to run the country into the ground like the great depression.

And I can counter that with a much easier to digest soundbite:

"Democrats want to raise your taxes."

Maybe add something about pork projects, the bridge to nowhere or whatever.

    Which is why we're fucked.

The American Dream shouldn't be selfish.

I grew up in a trailer home in an abusive family who told me constantly that I was an idiotic piece of shit. Now I'm 30, going through law school to be a patent lawyer, and engaged to a wonderful woman whom I love dearly. I am living the American Dream. Now, as a result of my hard work and success, I will reap the benefits, and I know and accept that I will be taxed by the government for it. And you know what? I'm fine with that.

Because if my taxes go to prop up public schools (which I used), public universities (which I used), food stamp programs (which I used), federal student loans (which I used), safe communities (in which I live), safe streets (which I use), and programs which help people not as fortunate or lucky as I am the chance to better themselves, then I am helping others reach the American Dream. And I'm okay with that.

40% of the votes are write-ins, but a good few of those won't be counted as votes for her. Murkowski's rhetoric is slightly more moderate than Miller's, but they vote exactly the same way. Well, except that she voted for the anti-rape amendment and he wouldn't have.

In all seriousness, though, a lot of people don't think like you do. They don't realize that they got to where they are by the helping hands of others, however invisible those hands may have been at the time. They just figure, "All right. I've made it. Now to fortify my riches for myself and my family and we'll be set".

So kudos to Jerry Brown for a classy win with fantastic (and largely positive) advertisements over someone trying to buy a seat with a personal fortune and all the pathetic attacks she could buy.

And secondly, and shitty as this election was, let's keep in mind how nice it is to live in a country where a (partial) transfer of power is a peaceful event. This is rare in the world, and even more rare in human history.

So, in more local news, it looks like my city of Santa Monica voted to add a half percent transaction and use tax to all transactions, which is incredibly stupid. While I'm not opposed to small tax increases at this point because of budget concerns, the was really poorly thought out. Santa Monica is a small city and is contiguous with the surrounding cities. It's not exactly in the middle of nowhere. All people are going to do is simply go a mile or two to go outside the city to conduct their business. Santa Monica will probably lose quite a bit of revenue over this because of the drop in business.

It's been nice living here, but I think I might now have to move.

What a small, vain, self-obsessed excuse for a human being.

Pretty much. Democrats through a weak candidate up because they doubted they could beat Murkowski, Murkowski runs a "clean" campaign during the primary while the Tea Party backed Joe Miller accuses her of nepotism and being a dirty incumbant and wins the primary by about 3,000 votes. Miller begins acting like an ass, so a large ammount of Alaskans throw their support back to Murkowski and prompting her to run as a write-in. Cue a string of small-to-large blunders on Miller's part, his general extremism (federal money is BAD! isn't a great statement to make in Alaska) and a generally weak Democratic candidate and it looks like Murkowski managed to capture all the moderate votes after people wised up a bit and realized that while "Incumbant=bad" "crazy=worse."

Ultimately, Murkowski tends to vote with the republicans, but she will break rank if she feels strongly about it (about 10% of the time it seems).

She's self-interested enough to run as a write-in candidate and, when she originally announced that intent, there was some noise that it could cost Republicans Alaska (it seems to have done the opposite). There's no way she's going to be a bipartisan vote, but I imagine she's going to have some vendettas to fulfill against the people who pushed her out of the primary.

I don't imagine it will help democrats in any meaningful way, but I do think it will make for some excellent /popcorn.

It kind of seems like the GOP are kicking environmentalists while they're down. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you. It's just that cap and trade and any major environmental bills have been DOA in Congress for quite a while now. With this GOP victory, there's no chance of any such bills being passed any time soon.
