I'm looking to grab a five minute clip from a DVD for a presentation I'm giving next week. I'd just use the scene selection, but the particular bit I want to show actually starts in the middle of a chapter.
Is there a program I can use that will allow me to copy just a portion like that, or is my best bet just queuing up the DVD, and dealing with interrupting the flow of the presentation?
Handbrake will do the decryption on about 99% of DVDs. Cut it with MPEG Streamclip.

Alternatively, you can tape it to a VHS. This is what I do when my fiancee needs obscure shit for her students--stream from my PC to my Xbox and tape to VHS.

What you are talking about doing is not legal for your purposes. I looked it up. :P
If I can, chances are your profs can as well, and they may or may not look favorably upon this. I do not look favorably upon it, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't know and the people who talked about decryption software minor infractions.
