    Finished Oichi's story mode once.

Heavens, but why did they make her second outfit look like a bag of Skittles barfed on her?

Totally enjoying playing as her, though. Hands, hands everywhere!

I'm a bit confused on some of her moves though. Can someone please elaborate these for me?

For starters, her move where the single hand pops up and grabs then slams. It appears I have to hold the button down for it to do any grabbing/slamming... Is that right?

The two hands that meet in the middle and crush- if I miss, is there any way to cancel/dispel the hands so I can use the move again? (I tried pressing the buttons again but it seems like I have to wait for the hands to disappear on their own.)

Her Basara move seems to be more suited for dealing with swarms of enemies rather than a single target. Or am I doing it wrong?

Sadly, I don't think a double pack exists for the PS2.

I picked up 3 for cheap (...well, cheap for Japan). If I like it I'll probably pick up 2 and 2 Heroes.
    Thanks!

My nephew said it looks like stained glass (as in, windows). I dunno, maybe it needs to grow on me.

And I think I got answers to my previous questions. Except the Basara one.

Also, replaying her to get to Nobunaga. I think I'm gonna need a second player to help with that one...

  • blaze_zeroblaze_zero Registered User regular
I thougt it looked like stained glass.

Her Basara is pretty good for any situation, really. Pretty much everyone can use theirs whenever.

Honestly, I rarely, if ever, use my Basara. Maybe Boost mode and then Ultimate Basara just for a flashy finish. Otherwise, it only serves as a combo breaker.

  • ringswraithringswraith Registered User regular
Yeah, that's pretty much all I use it for as well.

I'm not even using Hero Time, so I have on that accessory that ups your attack when your three meters are full (plus with her death element/Super Art I, not that hard to keep her HP topped off).

Had a blast fighting Nobunaga last night. Whenever he would get near, I'd perform her square combo until the two claws that slash downward, then use the up + triangle move. That pushed him far enough away to be crushed by L1 + triangle, followed by the triangle grab (which slams him 11 times) then he gets thrown back at me. Repeat.

Then he got into his (I'm assuming) final mode (where he has a red demon hovering above him). Beat me handily.

As a huge fan of DW/SW this thread warms my heart. That said, I haven't heard of Sengoku Basara before. I just checked out a video and before I could ask for more details about the game I somehow managed to buy it. Amazon Prime FTW.

It only took 12 seconds of video (5 seconds of gameplay) for me to hit the "add to cart" button. ;)

As a giant, avid fan of the Warrior series (seriously, KOEI has like 500 dollars of my money), I will say that I tend to like Sengoku Basara more. Not that it really matters, since I play both series to death. It's just that the combat in SB is so crazy and different than Warriors that it makes playing either one a fun experience (ie, it takes longer to burn out).

  • ringswraithringswraith Registered User regular
I will handily agree to what's been said about SB. I too have played the Warriors games and only recently started SB (as I'm sure everyone on this thread can attest to, since I bug them a lot about stuff). :) It's crazy fun.

I do hope they put out another one and bring it here. There are a lot of NPC's that I wish were P. Like say Kasuga.

They're doing an updated version of SB3 called Utage (Party) in Japan that allows you to play as a bunch of the NPCs from SB3. But I would not bet on a release outside of Japan.

I'll have it on Friday so I'll know what you mean first hand, but quantify that for me... how is it different?

  • blaze_zeroblaze_zero Registered User regular
Combat is a much more dynamic process to me. Instead of having to hit a button so many times to get a certain move, you get access to all of your special moves with the press of a button. Each one has different purposes and different abilties (some moves allow you to dash cancel, some let you cancel straight into other moves, others allow you to do two different combo strings, ect. ect.) and they differ for each character. Instead of every character having generally the same layout and abilities, each warrior has their own individual abilities.

Example: Tokugawa can charge his attacks up by holding the button, making them stronger and inducing more guard break. Mitsunari can time his attacks so that they do more damage and increase the amount of hits. Oichi can use almost all of her techniques at the same time. Keiji can cancel every one of his moves into his Love Tactics ability, giving him an extra set of moves. Date Masamune can go into a six sword mode that changes all of his attacks but gets rid of his ability to block.

As you play as each one, you learn different nuances that let you perform more and better ridiculous combos.

The thing that keeps me coming back to this game is the hidden details of every fighter.

Things like the Pirate's chain shot -> clap of thunder just frame release = Wow Enemy Boss You Just Got Totalled.

Or that mitsunari can cancel almost anything into his good stuff, cutting off his start up animations.
Or that the elaborate resheathing animation Mitsunari does after you do his full Square combo counts as a hit with huge range and does decent damage if you let him finish it. I killed tenkai with this accidentally. I was just letting the animation carry through for the lols and then soon as the hilt hits the scabbard he died.

Keiji can cancel most of his attacks into showy and brutally effective attacks with his up and triangle that starts a chain of these big hitters if you keep cancelling it. That keiji can cancel enemy stuns, dizzy and knockdowns with this (he does a sneeze). He can cancel his own death animation once per stage using it. You come back with 1 health, but you can back alive.

Things like Fuma never having to come back down to the ground unless he feels like it if there are enemies around to reset his air attacks.

Or that Yukimura's rapid spear attacks and spinning blazing kick wont end as long as you keep mashing the button as fast as you can, faster and faster. He only stops when you fail to keep it going.

The recovery on Magoichi's charged shots can be cancelled with evade to make them come out faster and this also works with the shotgun. Stick a gold halberd on her (+ 700 attack on your first hit) and she becomes even more of a monster since it works with these charged shots.

Kanbe's Criminal Smasher (the tornado attack that turns into a suplex if you do it close to an enemy) can be extended if you hit square just as he suplexes them into the ground. He'll do another suplex. You can do this about ten or so times.

Just so much awesome technical stuff with every character. I love finding out new things and I've been doing it non stop for about a month now and I still haven't unlocked every characters moveset.

Pulled this out of my SB:Heroes thread, just as evidence to how awesome this game is.

I think the PS3 is region-free, so yeah. It's probably rather easy for non-Japanese speakers to play, too.

I have the Japanese version imported. The hardest part is keeping the items straight (like the more obscure bonuses).

Wouldn't it be difficult to figure out some game messages, though?

  • blaze_zeroblaze_zero Registered User regular
A little. The text ones are only difficult if there's no colored text. If it's dialogue, I'm fine.

  • ringswraithringswraith Registered User regular
    You know Japanese? :)

Quick question- can you change the difficulty of the story mode while in the middle of it? (Not in the middle of an actual battle, but like at the mission screen.)

  • blaze_zeroblaze_zero Registered User regular
No. As far as I know, you have to go through the whole thing at the difficulty you set it at.

  • ringswraithringswraith Registered User regular
So... (Basara) Spoilers just in case.
Aside from the... I forget the name of the place, but the stage where you fight Hideaki and Tenkai. I did not know until learning how to unlock Nobunaga that that stage had a hidden area leading up to Tenkai. Are there other stages that have hidden sections like this? The only other one I've seen so far is that sand stage with the hidden base in the middle that opens up when you claim all the camps.

So, friends, when my PS2 finally died, I thought that I would never be able to enjoy my favorite ridiculousness ever again, since I'd moved to the 360. Sure, DW6 was okay, but it wasn't my favorite game. That title belongs firmly to the Orochi series. I had no idea they were even on Xbox, so when I happened to be walking around in gamestop and saw a copy for $10 today, I damn near died of joy.

I'm not sure who decided they didn't love their copy anymore, but I'm glad that they made that decision. It definitely found a good home. In no time, I was murdering snake monsters and traitorous dogs again. Having never played Ginchiyo before, I am completely enamored with everything about her. I know you guys are all high on this new hotness Basara, but I have missed this game so much. The complete insanity of coalition armies is good for my tired and cranky soul, and as always, these games are fantastic stress relief.

That's another series I haven't tried. Can someone make some comparisons with the Orochi series coming from Warriors or Sengoku Basara?

  • blaze_zeroblaze_zero Registered User regular
Orochi is okay. It's Samurai Warriors + Dynasty Warriors... and a few other characters. It's fun, but more grindy than I like.

There are only a scant few stages with hidden parts. The Sanada fight and Tokugawa fight are the only ones that come to mind right now. Oh, also Magoichi fight.

It was really hard compared to DW at the time. Random generic officers could easily kill you with one combo on Normal. My friend and I need to try it co-op again, though.

Yea, Orochi isn't as "low level" friendly as the other games. I just went back to clear out the last few achieves in the first one. The second one is a LOT friendlier in that regard though.

I also had a chance finish up DW Gundam 3. The True Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 stage was really awesome, in that showed how challenging that game could have been if they cranked it up a few notches.

I've been playing Dynasty Warriors 6 again now though, and I dunno. One of the main things reviewers use against the series is that you mash X all the time. The renbu system is—especially once you get a flash weapon—just that. Really makes you wonder what they were thinking...

  • ringswraithringswraith Registered User regular
    I haven't played a DW game since... 5? I know I haven't touched anything that hit on the PS3.

For SB3, I guess everyone has a joke weapon, but is there a perfect/ultimate weapon for them as well?

Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends is actually coming out in America On November 15th. Color me surprised.

Remember how they were going to put in more people? Well, they put in three. And they're all Wei-folk. Guo Jia, who was previously announced, Pang De who is just using Zhang Liao's Moveset returns with the twin halberds from 5, and Wang Yi, who might have actually existed in the Three Kingdoms. Maybe. Okay probably not.

meh @ indications of PS3-only release.

As far as DW6 goes, giving it a second shake I've found that it is still entertaining to me. Is it on any of my best lists? hardly. but still fun. mindless, x-spamming fun.

Haha are you trying to say that it differed somehow from the other umpteen Koei Warriors games. I find that hard to believe. They certainly didn't change the storyline. That is pretty set in stone.

can't really argue opinion that it was awful, I don't think it was that bad.

However, the movesets and weapons for the majority of the cast DW6 were changed (in addition to many of them being removed). It was an attempt to reboot the gameplay or something. who knows.

In any case, it was not driven by the charge system (X->X->X->Y->A->X->X->X->Y->O), but the renbu system of "infinite combo chains" (X->X->X->...X->O).

Essentially, DW6 took out everything unique about the characters. It's quite a bit different in the fact that it just isn't fun. I have never minded plopping 60+ hours into a warriors game, but this one was just really bad.

DW6 and SW3 are the only Warriors games I regret buying.

  • Magic PinkMagic Pink Tur-Boner-Fed Registered User regular
Plus DW6 has the worst pop in of the series. It was inexcusably bad, you could literally suddenly be surrounded by over a hundred enemies that were mid- combo. Even 2 and 3 were better than 6 was.

  • tastydonutstastydonuts Registered User regular
I am actually playing it again now for the achieves, and that is one of the actual issues with the game. I haven't lost a general in mid-combo, but a few times I've had say a guard captain drop out of existence as I turned the camera.
