Turning a series of JPG images into an AVI?

I'm quite uneducated when it comes to graphical manipulation, so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I've recently been putting together animations by making sequential image files and then compiling them as an animated GIF in GIMP. Sadly, this leads to a significant loss in image quality when GIMP messes with the colordepth in order to make the final GIF image. In addition, GIMP is positively terribly about timing issues. Each frame can be assigned an individual time (good), but this is accomplished by manually editing the name of each layer (cumbersome)!

I'm wondering if there's any way I can take a series of JPG images and compile them into a AVI file, preferably with the ability to define the time each frame will display? I haven't been able to find much software for this purpose that's readily available (And preferably free). I'm working on an OS X machine running 10.6.4, if that makes any difference. Thanks for any help!

Yes! Use Virtualdub and follow this guide - http://www.cmiss.org/cmgui/wiki/CreatingAnAVIFromASeriesOfImagesWindows

:edit: Crap, just noticed you're on OSX and there's no Virtualdub for it.

Not going to edit that one again, but there's Avidemux for Mac and a tutorial here - http://www.how-to-make-your-own-animation.com/quickanimation5.html

Sweet, thanks! AVIdemux looks like a solid option. I was able to make an AVI out of my JPGs, but the only issue is that it doesn't allow for a variable framerate (i.e. Frame 1 will display at the same rate as frame 101 no matter what). Still I think I can get around that by just setting the framerate to the lowest increment, and then doubling up the frames for the slower ones.

Yeah, with a high enough FPS you can repeat the same frame without getting flicker.
