I took a look at Pox Nora, the game advertised on the penny arcade site. Seems like it may be fun but for some reason the game won't run correctly on my computer even though I have the latest version of Java. Are there any other games that are similar to Pox Nora that I can check out? Other themes would be fine as well.
The hell is pox nora anyway. I see it advertised all the time on PA but I figure it's just a bad game and if it was any good I would have heard about it from other people, not an ad.
Well, I would say it's worth trying to figure out why it's not working. Are you getting a specific error? Did you check the FAQ/forums? I seem to recall something about the latest version of java and having to clear your webstart cache (though I may be making that up).
I've really enjoyed the game so far, I've gotten a bit side tracked with FFIII, but I look forward to coming back. The sample decks are quite good. Also, w/trading you only need to drop about $25 and you can trade for most of what you need to make a specific deck.
I know there are a lot of star chamber fans on PA, but I like pox much better. And i think most SRPG players would too.
Saying that, there are some issues...
1. The interface in game is excellent, but every other interface (deck building, lobby, etc) is awful. The most annoying thing to me is having to use the website to build/activate a deck and set client preferences. Couldn't they just have built that into the java app?
2. The tournament keeps getting pushed back, which I don't take as a good sign.
3. There are some "i win" strategies, though they can easily be countered, it's hard to be prepared to handle all of them.
4. The maps really suck, and give a unfair advantage in faction play. Never take a game unless its set on random.
5. This pretty much goes for all games these days, but the maturity level in game and on the forums can be pretty bad.
I've got a bunch of extra runes if anyone wants to trade around. Getting 100 runes + 7 tokens for $25 is actually a pretty good deal.
Edit: Make sure you run through the tutorial before you try match.
I love the premise of Pox Nora, and playing through the tutorial made me very excited. I was about ready to drop a few bucks on a starter pack right there; however, when I play a game against an opponent I find myself bored. I don't know why, but I just can't seem to finish a game.

I can see that. However, using your own deck/strategy does make for a more exciting game. I'm not saying this is why you found it boring, I'm just saying it is more exciting to be using your own deck. Not to mention you'll get XP at the end if you do.
I was in the beta and I enjoyed it immensely. However, like all trading card games, you can't expect to be competitive unless you spend a fair amount of dough. This is why I quit in the end.
Also, those green squares can go to hell, along with the tiny purple triangles that like to spawn right next to me while I'm trying to evade a horde of those pink splitters.

I'm still curious what the actual error you're getting is. Regardless, if you check the FAQ -> Troubleshooting you'll see how to do it.
Good luck.
