In my opinion, cis and trans are pretty damn obscure ways of describing gender or sexuality.
Well, at least "cisgendered" is definitely not common at any level of laymanship.
oh epic fail when you say cis and trans all I can think about is organic chemistry...
Same - which is really the only reason I had a snowball's chance in hell of actually understanding what cisgendered meant.
Yet I was still confused.
Rivs, what I'm saying is that people were getting a bit tetchy at the fact that people might not know what cisgendered implies when they really shouldn't seeing as it's not a word anyone would be expected to know as a layperson.
Like I wouldn't expect you to know what cholecystitis is.

Sarks was just being a jerk. I just looked it up in the dictionary, and the prefix 'cis' as explained in my college dictionary would have left me with no clue whatsoever what the prefix would mean when stuck on the front of "gender".
'Cisgender' of course isn't even in the dictionary, because it's a neologism. However desperately the term may have been needed in gender studies, it's not a common use word and abusing someone for not understanding it is the kind of 'elitism' which we are currently pretending doesn't exist.

Cisgender is the opposite of transgender, hence the slash separating the two in my explanation. It was a pretty simple explanation but I don't see why it warranted getting so mad at my joke suggesting a chemistry class, among other things. Gee-whiz.

Eh, not knowing it, sure.
But I won't give someone a pass on transphobia/heterosexism for not understanding it.

Though it feels like unreliable info!

You calling me Norwegian? ... Englishman.
You should make your own episode of Mythbusters about it.
Obscure? Yes to a layperson, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with having specialized terminology for people that actually know their shit.
Yes.

do sprite and saltine crackers as the alternate. Then use some malt liquor as your control.
Clear soda in general seems to help me.
Also Hugh Laurie's actual accent is so sexy.
