This is news to me: UncleSporky tipped me off that the hardwire LAN adapter for the Wii is now available from Nintendo directly for $25. I remember a number of people asking about this, and personally I can't stand troubleshooting wi-fi, so if your wireless router is giving you shit or you're in an area with a lot of wireless traffic, this is another option for fewer gray hairs.
If you want to use the online features of your Wii console and you don't have a wireless router, you can use the Wii LAN Adapter.
Click here for information on how to hook up your Wii console to your wired home network using the Wii LAN Adapter in order to access your broadband internet connection.
NOTE: The Wii LAN Adapter is NOT required to connect your Wii console to the internet using your high-speed internet connection. If you own a wireless router, you should be able to go online without any additional accessories. Click here for information on the various options for connecting your Wii to the internet.
If you do not own a wired or wireless router, but you have a PC connected to the internet through a broadband modem, you can use the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector to connect your Wii console to your broadband internet connection through your existing PC. Click here for more information on the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector.

I was tipped off by someone else on this forum, I think, they just casually mentioned it and I was like "wait, srsly? huh."
I ordered it and it arrived really quickly. And just so you know, it works as intended, or perhaps even better. I was convinced that my Wii was irredeemably offline when I took it to a friend's house and hooked it up side by side with his. His worked, mine didn't. But the LAN adapter works beautifully, downloading and surfing so quickly. I watched part of MST3K yesterday.

I pre-ordered and had it mailed over a week ago. I plugged it into my router (more accurately I swapped one PC's plug for it) and proceeded to update all the new channels and extras. I picked up Super Mario Bros, Solomon's Key, and Super Castlevania III as well, followed bu Mario Kart 64 just this afternoon.
It's not the same as wireless, but for the price it's quite a bargain.

More or less, I suppose. What I don't get is why Nintendo released it in mid January, rather than at launch or sometime in December. Doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to leave all the non-wifi Wii owners high and dry for so long, unless there were manufacturing or stocking issues.
does anyone know if any old usb to ethernet adapter would work? or do you have to get the nintendo one. My neighbor is letting me use his wireless, but a lot of times I can never connect to the shop channel or news channel, so I'm gonna buy one of these.
All other USB LAN adapters are incompatible with the Wii, according to Nintendo's customer service site and I think first-hand user account (I heard it was because of driver issues or some such), so the one made by Nintendo is the one you have to use.

There was another brand that worked, but only because it used the same chipset as the Nintendo one.
I think the other brand was a bit cheaper, but $25 isn't exactly going to break the bank for most people. And you can be sure that this one will be 100% compatible.

That was the Buffalo USB wi-fi adapter, IIRC, but that one plugged into your computer to generate a wi-fi signal. This is the adapter that you plug into the Wii to let you use a hardwire LAN cable. No wi-fi involved, which helps a chunk of people.

The one I was referring to was the: "KINAMAX USB 2.0 to RJ45 Fast Ethernet 10/100 Base-T Network Adapter".

I read about it at:

It costs $20 anyway, so the Official one is a better deal now.
