TBH, the minute I heard about this game and it's gameplay I knew people would either love it or hate it, same with the ending. I doubt this game is going to make dollar one, but I hope they can continue the Noire series, refining gameplay and writing along the way.
I stopped trying to behave like a detective and went around accusing everybody of everything under the sun. It doesn't matter what I do, the of magic hand holding ensures that Cole Phelps will solve the case no matter how blatanly incompetent he is. This isn't a detective game, it's a full blown asshole simulator.

Oh, you'll solve cases all right. And condemn a lot of innocent people to prison, death, or death in prison.
I'm sorry but no, they cut cases because the game is three disks long. They barely managed to fit it onto a blue ray, and Sony would have thrown a shitfit if they had gone and asked for two. As for the other thing.
Throughout the game, you see Phelps going to the club to see Elsa. It's not a huge indication of his feelings for her, admittedly, but it goes a way to show you that he has a thing for her.
Do we know that for sure? Does someone have a link for that? It would make me feel better that Bondi was forced to make these cuts universally.
My biggest problem is that despite the fact the game is crafted to be a semi-historical, nostalgic adventure, the connection of the Black Dahlia murder to the other murder is fairly clumsy. The only thing that these women have in common is the head injuries, the carefulness of the killer and being bound. None of the victims in the game exhibit the same signature M.O. that the Short murder had. I know its a game but you would think a game that did so much research would bend to the legend, not the other way around.
Otherwise, I'm disappointed I didn't get to actually solve a murder but as far as being dark, cynical and apropo for the LAPD, it did the job. The Treasure hunt in the quarter moon murders was fun but I think the order should have been different. (I only guessed wrong once). Walking through the tar pits should have been next to last, just my opinion. The poems didn't bother me even though I like Mary better than Percy. I am very glad that the ending was not another rooftop scene. I give them credit for keeping the QTEs to a minimum and using gameplay to tell the story. And thank god there is no preachy talking killer bullshit where he explains all his crimes. So far, so good.
If it's possible to fail, I totally got the wrong guy here, right? Mendez?! Dick McColl framed Mendez, since no sane person would go around memorizing license plates and then writing them down just in case the police come.
The poem thing is annoying if you haven't discovered all of the landmarks so you basically have to drive around for awhile until your partner tells you which one it is.
Fortunately I hadn't finished all of the street crimes so I used the waiting to finish those off
It's not like they force you to drive around in the dark. If you check your map, all the landmarks you haven't found show up as a ?, and they still show the little text blurb about it.
My problem was that for the last 2 or 3, I was an idiot and couldn't decipher where to go. But you can still cheat. If you mark a landmark and it's correct, your objectives will update. So I just kept marking them until I got the right one. Little tedious having to go in and out of the map, but oh well.

I don't think this has been brought up, but one thing to keep in mind about introducing evidence and/or choosing when to pick truth / doubt / lie:
Your objective is not to prove to a rational being that they lied. This isn't a court of law, and you don't win points for proving something wasn't factually accurate. You are trying to manipulate this person into abandoning their motive for lying or withholding truth. When multiple pieces of evidence all seem to apply to a particular statement, pick the one that you feel will best get their mind away from their flawed world view and get them talking about things that are true.
uhhh

I got maybe five questions right. I guess Phelps is a sucker for a pretty face - I just couldn't get a read on them.
My thoughts while going through 'Fall of an Idol'
While interviewing the actress, I was watching the body language saying, 'can't really trust what I read off her, she's an actress'. A friend who was watching then said, 'yeah but your notes make a point about saying she is a 'B' movie actress. So I figured she was lying.
I got through all of Traffic without missing a single question. I don't understand how you could. Every character makes the exact same face when they're lying.
They squint a bit and the corner of their mouth goes up. Every single one. Except Hopgood. Which is a joke because he's the shittiest liar anyway. Just wait until after they're done speaking, when you have the choice of truth/lie/doubt. And wait a bit. Just watch them then. I'm not making this up. Every. Single. Question. I got them all right. All that matters is if you have evidence or you have to pick Doubt.

Having the evidence to accuse them of lying and choosing the correct evidence when calling the person a liar are two different things. The game likes to get a little wacky when it comes to what evidence matches up with what lying accusation.

Ok, maybe later. But not so far. So far it has all be rather plain.
Ok, except the Hopgood interrogation. I admit I had to redo that one, because when he said he wasn't involved with Ballard, I chose "20,000 dollar check" rather than "blackmail." Despite the fact they are the same goddamn thing.

No they aren't.
That check is from Mark Bishop to Hopgoods ex-wife. Just waiving a check that concerns two other people in front of him isn't enough proof.

Well to be fair, I stumbled through the Traffic desk while drinking too much rye. Was trying to keep with the style.
This has been a fun game so far... working through Traffic now but I keep getting sidetracked by joyriding and street crimes.
what was bothering me about street crimes was that most so far it seemed like I was just killing everybody in the shootout ones. but, something I noticed as far as doing nonlethal shots (in the terminator sense) is after the I'm done when calls in the code 4, he's just called for an ambulance. But when shottied the last guy in the face on one crime he called for an ambulance, coroner and supervisor. So I think (to anybody bothered about the bodycount you're getting) that even though your "people shot dead" counter always goes up, you're not... technically killing people? has anybody else noticed this? or is the latter just random happenstance

I noticed that one of the mooks I shot during one of the actual cases (not a street crime) was writhing around on the ground and once I approached him he reached for a gun so I outright killed him.
Another tip that I don't think a lot of people noticed re: interrogations: If you picked "Lie" and you're looking down at your notebook to pick a piece of evidence, but you're unsure, push the right stick up to peek up at your subject; sometimes he or she will look different at the "choosing evidence" screen, which might give you an indication as to whether you're on the right track or not. If they look cocky or sure, odds are that you aren't actually supposed to present evidence there, or you may just not have the evidence in question.

It's still early in the game. You haven't run into any career criminals yet
Later on you interrogate people who are far better liars
Did Jack really have to call every woman he met Princess? Did he really?
I think Jack's part of the story would have been better served being spread throughout the game.
Maybe a case or two with Jack in between each desk with Cole and then tie the two plot lines together in the final desk. It would at least have given the writers a chance to add some more depth to the plot and Jack's character.
Apart from one or two minor issues it's a damn fine game, more of that please.
edit: messed up the spoiler tags, hope no-one saw anything they weren't supposed to see.

I haven't really watched the expressions to figure it out a lot though. in certain conversations they get really uncanny volley too. but I think my reading/watching a lot of detective noir (Dashiell Hammett especially) kinda gives me a passive spoiler for the game's cases.

Code 4 is not an ambulance call. Code 4 is "no further assistance required." Basically, "Yeah, killed the guy. We're good."

okay so if this game is making my PS3 fan go crazy I should just return it?
I don't think it's just your copy. My PS3 slim gets really hot when playing this game for more tha a half hour. Its frozen a few times, probably due to overheating.

Yeah I was saying like return it forever. Or until something changes.
But the game isn't like red-ring of death freezing and it's just a situation where you have to turn off your PS3?
Just beat it, loved the hell out of this game, now time to go for 1000/1000 achievements :P (of course i guess ill need the dlc to do that, since the gamestop and walmart case are both needed from the looks of it )
I havent really had much trouble with the interogations until golden butterfly
when hugo comes home AND NO MATTER WHAT I PICK I'm SOMEHOW WRONG
so goddamn annoying
I picked Eli, and he yelled at me. I thought it was because I did get a question wrong on him. But I decided to restart and try the husband anyway. I got yelled at again. I did it again, got the questions right, picked Eli and the Capn was happy as hell. I don't know.
More anecdotal evidence: I have played this on my PS3 for hours with no overheating, freezing or fan trouble.
I would give your PS3 a good dusting with an air can.
I had way more trouble with RDR... but some people had no issues at all with that game too.
Yeah, I just don't know if its my new setup or what. I moved it higher and closer to my tv. I played RDR and GTA IV for hours without any problems and left it on an entire day. The Slim I have is six months old, this is the first game it ever really choked on.
I'll be clear I was just mentioning the problems I was experiencing. I've played error free for the last day or so.
Still I might as well give it a once over just in case.
