Technically it was a parry. If you block, you still take some damage. To parry you have to block in the split second before the attack hits. It's really precise timing.

I don't really play SF, but every time I watch that video I get chills. I can only imagine how that must have felt.

i also don't know a ton about fighting games, but i have to imagine pulling something like that off, in a high-pressure situation with dozens of your peers watching, is not an easy feat. he definitely deserves whatever nerd-cred and nerd-bitches it got him
