I think my enthusiasm for TF2 is dying for the same reason I'm losing my interest in MNC: the people I play with most often have some fantastically sour attitudes and it gets me in a bad mood as well. It's difficult to justify signing on when the chatlog's just going to be filled with the regulars bitching about the map and the quality of their team.

That was some major fun tonight. Thanks guys! I still can't believe I somehow knocked four people off the bridge with like two rockets. When I saw the messages, I literally just stood there, dumbfounded.
What Kupi said I think is interesting to me because I do find that when we are doing pub-fortress people don't talk all that often. I feel like its not that people are more negative, but that there's no positive to balance it out. I can't help but wonder if this has to do with the fact that you can't vote for all-talk on the HONC. I've seen dead-silent teams turn fun and lively when all-talk. Though, I know some people dislike alltalk. I admit I'm part of the problem, I rarely speak up in games (heck, I think this is like my second post on TF2) and so don't add anything positive to the atmosphere.
Although, complaining about the map is nothing new. I don't think I've ever played on a PA server without someone ridiculing the map choice. I sort of expect it.
PS. Thanks Pablo for pointing out my Steam avatar was a weirdly colorful. It was a place holder until I decided on my real avatar. Which I then forgot to change for years.
The thing about Alltalk, to me, is that it's more a social voice mode than a strategic voice mode (clearly). If Alltalk's on, you're going to get silence out of the people who typically use it for calling enemy movements, coordinating ubers, delegating map coverage, and so on, because those people are acutely aware that even attempting to do those things on a public channel is counter-productive. Quality of play goes down because there's no useful communication. And while the conversational aspect of Alltalk can be great fun, it takes a few instigators to actually get the ball rolling-- and if you don't have our token strong personalities, what you wind up with is Notalk instead of Alltalk.

The other side to alltalk is that it's more of a social voice than a strategic mode.
Because honestly, as old as this game is and as long as most of us have been playing it I would think that most folks can pretty much tell what's going on concerning strategy and play this here game with this here group for the social aspect rather than the srs bznss aspect.
It's too bad you weren't on my team Kupi. We were all "Scoutlands is Bestlands" and "Everyone should vote for Bestwater".
Except Endaro. He's a sourpuss.

I voted for bestwater. And I don't hate badlands, I just don't think it's the best map. Ofcourse people would say my opinion is suspect, I like fastlane.
Badlands is my favourite map when it isnt 4+ scouts a side or a room full of engies. This is true for pretty much all of the maps, but you can sometimes replace the scouts with team-of-snipers/spies
I have always wondered why you are so much more likely to get a team of 2/3 snipers and 2/3 spies than you are to get teams of soldiers and demos. More likely to get a team of pyros. It seems to me that the more often a player dies having achieved nothing the more they like a class. I dont get it, demoman is awesome.
Also I was one of the 4 coal knocked off the bridge, it was like being in a whirlwind but instead of flying cows it was a soldier and then there was blackness.
Granary is by far my favorite map. I play a Huntsman sniper, and I've played the map so much that I know all the "alleys" by heart. All that I have to do is line myself up and skewer their heads. Coincidentally, I have a rapidly growing collection of screenshots depicting mans pinned against walls or slumped into awkward positions with arrows through their heads.
When it comes to every other map in the game, however, I'm so-so.
I casually popped into one of the servers yesterday. 'twas fun.
