Broken into:

Yesterday while my wife and I were celebrating our 6th year anniversay our house was broken into. I won't get into specifics about what was all taken at this point but I would love some advice.

I've called the police, they will be by sometime this morning.
I've called and cancelled my visa and put a watch on my debit card.
I have to call the insurance agency this morning as they weren't open when we got home last night.
I have to find a locksmith to repair our door and frame.

Anything I've missed? Will get into some more detail after cops and insurance people are gone today.

I can't think of anything clever.

Make a list, itemised, of everything you can think of that's missing, before the insurance agency arrives - ideally also before they both arrive. If you have any serial numbers noted down, include them. Identifying marks are helpful - that your 360 has a blue faceplate might not be because it's removable, but that it's got a giant scratch on the disc tray would, for example. Photos are worth including if you have any.

If any ID was taken, notify whoever's in charge of that due to possible identity fraud. Passports especially.

Hold off on the locksmith until the police have been round and examined the break-in damage.

Yeah, all this is done so far. My wife and I were horrible at keeping receipts with serial numbers and whatnot, however we do have some bills which we should be able to trace back for the TV / etc.

All our ID was on us at the time, the only thing they really got was our saved info in the xbox... which the credit card has been cancelled for.

    Fffffffffffffffffffffffff

Serial numbers might be on the boxes, if you still have those around.

It wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on Craigslist or whatever, but don't count on it.

Be thankful neither of you were home at the time. I know you probably think it only happened because you weren't there, but when we were broken into last year my one point of solace was knowing it could have been far worse.

If you think there are areas where the police might be able to get a good print, try to preserve that area until the cops get there. Be aware that print dust makes a fucking mess.

Talk to your neighbors and let them know what heppened, it's possible there is or is going to be a string of break-ins in the area and enhanced vigilance may result in somebody getting caught, or at least others not getting broke into.

If is theft was predominantly game consoles and games then gamestop or some other vendor that trades in used games/consoles may be where the property is sold, since they tend to have looser policies than pawn shops with respect to requiring identification.

If you registered (or whatever) your Xbox, microsoft might have your serial number; could call them and ask or check your xbox.com profile.

If you registered your Xbox online, you should be able to retrieve your serial number there. Hell, I think if you go to http://www.xbox.com/DRM and go part-way through the process you can see the Console IDs and serial numbers that you've downloaded in the past and grab it there (you'll need to do this anyway when you get a replacement, by the way). If not, you may be able to get it from MS directly, at 1-800-MYXBOX in the US. It's not going to retrieve your save data, but if they find your Xbox you may be able to identify it that way. Make sure you change your password on any Live accounts, too - they might not be able to buy anything, but they can sure as hell spend your existing points or play on Live and get you banned.

Hmmm yeah is there some way you can report your xbox stolen to MS? Wouldn't want to get banned for shit someone else does; maybe they could even ban the machine itself from XBL if it seems like it's gone for good.

Meh, if your Live password is changed they can't get online, at least with your tag - I doubt they respond to ban requests simply because of the high probability of someone getting their friend's box banned as a joke.

Cops have been here to take out statements, repair dude has been here so we could secure our door, waiting for the adjuster to come and the print guy to come.

Managed to get serial numbers for everything except our TV but we have make, model and purchase reciept.

You could sitting pretty from a financial standpoint if it's mostly electronics and other replaceable stuff, then. How old was the TV?

Just make sure to list the original, new, prices of everything that was taken when they ask you to fill out the forms. Don't try to estimate the replacement cost, or how much it's been devalued by use - that's their job.

I had a bunch of consoles and games stolen a couple of years ago. I got a really, really good deal from my insurance company, despite a $500 deductible.

Good job on watching your credit card and debit accounts, but do you have any other finances? Would you potentially have paperwork in a desk or garbage can somewhere? You should check on all your accounts. I don't know if there is something you can do more systematically about identity theft, maybe someone else would know.

Guy was here to inspect the damages to the doors and whatnot.
Looks like we are gonna have the door, locks, frame and weather stripping replaced, floor was gouged on the way out so it needs to be torn up and redone as well.

Adjuster most likely isn't coming by, he just wants us to fill out paperwork for the missing items.

    Blah.

    ~Update~

    Insurance:
Having a hard time getting ahold of the adjuster to confirm how this process will work. When we spoke with the company itself they mentioned that what might happen is they give us a check for half the amount. We buy the items, submit the reciepts then get reimbursement. If this is the case we going to raise some hell. This was our first claim and we have even taken steps for prevention. An alarm consultant coming by the house today. So expecting us to fork out that much cash ontop of a nice chunk of a deducible is cruel.

We haven't heard anything from the police, I have called around the game stores (like EB Games) to find out if they are part of the police seral number system. No one could give me a straight answer. One said they send all the used consoles to headoffice where they check them there, another said they only do a serial number scan when they sell them. I would be estactic if the only thing recovered was the xbox elite. So many hours of saved games (Dragon Age Origins attempt #3 to finish) was on there.....

Speaking of Xbox, if you have one. Go take a picture of it right now with alllll your controllers and such. You don't ever want to deal with Xbox customer support if ever you lose your system. Xbox support will not cancelled or block accounts from accessing Marketplace even though you can store CC info on the system. They will also not give you any proof of ownership. Our receipt serial number doesn't match the xbox that went missing (and what we filed to the police) because the first system red ringed and xbox replaced it. I had a nice arguement with customer support since it's against their "policy" to give out such info (yet they are happy to give me all my serial numbers) but not anything in writing saying "yeah xbox #1234 died we replaced with with xbox #4321". They also "couldn't" give us a copy of this "policy".

I was just worried that the insurance company might give us grief since we are claiming 2 xbox systems. My hubby is going to call back box today to speak to a manager, who was supposed to call us back last night.

In case those are curious, here is the list of what was taken out the front door during the day while living on a busy street...:
-56 beautiful inches of samsung LED
-2 Xbox 360s (one was an elite) along with all the cords and controllers plus 3 games that were sitting ontop of the system.
-Wii with all the cords and controllers (3) plus the wii fit i had beisde the system. They didn't find the board.
-Kids' DSi. It had Lego Harry Potter in it. My youngest just got that a week ago for his birthday D:
-Remote for the sound system they didn't take o_O
-Our digital camera charger :...: (i know it was taken in haste but still!!!)
    -Small knife collection.

sorry if rambled on needlessly. I needed to vent. I always thought the car would of been stolen... never did I imagine a house rape! Blarg! We also have a suspicion it might of been someone we know. My black cat salem has one of those callors that break if they are choking. It was laying on the floor near the front door, which would mean they were "cosiderate" enough to (what i assume) grab and throw salem back into the house. Since he would of tried for the door then they were hauling the TV out. We mentioned this to the police as well. But without any kind of witness it's only a shot in the dark. We know someone shady that loves cats and knows about our little Salem and his restriction to the out doors. Or maybe we just had some considerate robbers.

You may have missed it when I mentioned it in the wow thread, but check your credit cards that you purchased this stuff with, they may have theft policies to help you get items back.

Well we discussed it, but the credit card we currently have is new and with a different bank. None of the toys we had would of been purchased with this card saddly. The Wii would of been the newest and that was with debit. The Xboxs are at min 3-4 years old.

Financed in '07 through one of those charge you up the ass credit companies, which since has long been paid off. Tv not so much the issue, of course we have plenty pictures of it proving we own it for years.

It was just the Xbox I am worried about, just have a feeling it's going to be an issue. Though I just been informed that I could also get people to sign something saying "yes there was a black and a white xbox". My father in law (for example) always plays Tiger Woods golf on it when he is over, and he is willing to sign something stating that fact.

Just wished xbox customer support was less douchy. I still can't fathom how bad it is for them to give me proof of replacement. Expecially since i gave them all our gamertag info, address, phone numbers and passwords to prove it is our system. I even told the lady she can even mail/email to the same address they sent the replacement xbox to! Mind blowin!
