They also mentioned that Brad Bird isn't adverse to doing an Incredibles 2. He's just waiting for the right story.

Also didn't it make the most money overall in terms of merchandise?

True but if you refer back to my post, it seems like they created the merchandise, then the movie afterwards.

Maybe I'm wrong. Cars just looks like one of those movies that exists solely to sell toys, then tell a story.

I'm not against a company making money, but if most of their movies tell an awesome story, I'm going to be a little critical of making a movie just to make money and tell a story later.

This is assuming that they made Cars just to make money and not give a shit about a story.

Pixar films are literally my favorite out of pretty much anything. As duck said many a page ago it's like comparing two hanzo swords, but here I go:

    1) Incredibles
    2) Monsters Inc
    3) Ratatoullie
    4) Finding Nemo
    5) Wall-E

That being said, cars was fine. Not the same quality as the others but I would watch it again. Cars 2 I'm nervous about but pixar has earned some street cred.

What the fuck happened to that fantasy film Pixar was working on? The Bear and the Bow?

I was looking kind of forward to that one.

*edit* apparently the title was changed to "Brave" and it is out in 2012. They've been working on that one for forever, it seems.

I just don't get why pixar goes and makes movies with characters that have so little to emote with.
All that effort to make fish and cars gesture and one-eyed monsters express two-eye expressions.
Kinda like early Disney's obsession with making hyper-realistic human character motion, when stylized humans emote better.

I thought that was kind of the point?

    Not following you.

To take something we generally would never identify with and make it feel like a real character that we emphasize with.

And it seems to be a quirky self-imposed limitation, similar to early Disney's own quirky self-imposed limitations?

Kinda paraphrasing some stuff John K wrote about emotive character design.
I'd be hard pressed to take that guy's opinions seriously.

John K might be kind of a dick

but he knows his shit when it comes to character design, drawing principles and animation

also, one of the biggest problems with Cars is that there is no humanity in their world. There's nothing for us to relate to, and it is jarring to see human constructions without humanity in them - cars riding on an airplane, things like that. With all of their other films (even Bug's Life) there is a sense, either explicitly stated or implied, that these things are happening in a human world. In Cars, it's a complete alternate dimension, with no place for the viewer.

all that said, I still think they did as good a job with the character design as they could be expected to, given the circumstances. The characters are able to emote well, and are convincing in their movements and anatomy (so to speak). Some of their choices are a little odd, such as using the windshield as the eyes instead of the headlights, but it makes sense, given that the windshield is where we generally look for signs of life (a driver).

It's pretty clear the reason they chose Toy Story and then Cars to for the latest sequels is because they are both, by far, the most profitable movies as far as merchandise goes.

I don't really care about that side myself, but I'd rather see Incredibles 2 before Cars 2.
