So i was an idiot, and accidentally changed my network settings when I took my laptop to school. Can someone running ubuntu post their /etc/network/interfaces files, so I can compare it.

I am running a wep, with the wireless connection set as ath0.

For some reason I am able to occasionally make the internet work, but when I restart, I lose all connectivity. It is very iffy to revive.

thanks

Eh...I'm not going to post mine because it wouldn't help you at all. However, is there more than one network interface (aside from loopback) that are being started on boot?

    iface lo inet loopback

    iface eth0 inet dhcp

    auto eth1
    #iface eth1 inet dhcp

Maybe there's something odd about the way the drivers for your wireless works, but why is there a wlan0 entry active along with ath0?

The auto entries for eth* should be commented out.

no change, it still doesnt want to connect.

even when I just try and set up the connection every time i turn it on, it is a bitch to try and get working.

What does "iwconfig" return after you boot up (and are still unable to connect)?

    it looks something like this
lo, eth0, sit0 all have no wireless extension

the ath0 gives the following info though
    IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"**"
mode: managed frequency:2.412ghz access point: Not-Associated
    bit rate: 1 mb/s tx-power: 18dbm sensitivity= 0/3
    retry:off rts thr:off fragment thr:off
    power management:off
    link quality=0/94
    signal level=-95dbm noise level= -95dbm
Rx invalid nwid:0 rx invalid crypt:0 rx invlid crypt:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 invalid misc:0 missed beacon:0

every other time that I havent got my network set up right, it takes a few tries, but I am able to connect to the network eventually. This time I have only been able to connect once in 3 days. (it isnt the network because I am using my other computer to type this).

What wireless adapter are you using?

    What's the output of
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

    ?

Try "sudo modprobe wlan_wep" and then restart networking again. Anything change?

    Does:
    sudo iwlist scan

list your router (I'm assuming that you haven't diabled SSID broadcasting on it)?

EDIT: You haven't stated what wireless adapter you're using yet.

Is the computer that you're typing this on wired, or using wireless as well? It looks like there is a ton of "noise" in your area. The only router in that list I see that would be even remotely usable is linksys_SES_32437.
