Super Mario Galaxy 2 already won game of the year, back in 2007 when it was released as Super Mario Galaxy 1. :) (Kidding of course)

On a serious note, the lack of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light on BOTH the downloadable games and the multiplayer coop games list is a god damned crime against humanity.

Maybe all these award show producers are afraid that highlighting too many wii games would alienate their brain dead target audience.

I don't feel the least bit of remorse when I say that the gamers that view g4tv or the spike VGAs as impartial and credible judges are the hicks of the gaming world.

That's like claiming that the '90s surge of PC-related jobs destroyed the console gaming market, as 27% of respondents who said they only play Solitaire on the PC also said they do own a Playstation or Nintendo 64.

This was before your ninja edit. Also your insistence that when Reggie said Apple was Nintendo's biggest current competitor, he actually meant five or six other things.

Raven Software, the studio behind Singularity and Wolfenstein, is working on another military FPS, and it may be a sequel to one of those franchises. A Gamasutra job posting calls for a Lead FX Artist to help with "an established, console-based, realistic, first-person military shooter." Later in the job description, it mentions that "other effects (sci-fi, fantasy, etc.)" would be a plus for submitted portfolios.

It's the "established" part of the job description that leaves room for sequel speculation. Both Singularity and Wolfenstein fit the description of console-focused military shooters, and both include sci-fi elements. It could be either of these, if not another franchise that Raven hasn't yet worked on.

Despite recent layoffs, rumors have circulated that Raven was working on a stealth action Bond game. It's unlikely that this latest job posting is for that project, though, since the Bond game was rumored to be third-person
It says realistic so it obviously can't be Call of Duty.

Raven and their games are absolutely terrible.

I played Singularity for about 30 minutes and hung it up.

Wife beat it. But she really likes those kinds of games.

What? Mass Effect 2 is not the first game to allow importing a save from a previous game. Off the top of my head I can think of .hack for PS2 and Golden Sun for GBA.

I am sure I'd see other silly things if I read the entire list.

Which is doubly weird since Epic Mickey is considered good but flawed, and there's at least three games that were undoubtedly better/equally noteworthy (Mario Galaxy 2, Kirby's Epic Yarn, DK Country Returns).

But of course those games were made by that company you're only allowed to enjoy if your age is in the single digits, apparently.

I still think Trauma Team is the Wii GotY, but hardly anybody bought it, plus it came out early in the year so I'm not going to be surprised if it doesn't make very many lists. But yeah, I would have thought that they would have gone with Mario Galaxy 2 over Epic Mickey.

You do realize Endless Ocean 2 came out this year, right? I don't want to hurt you Rainbow, but that doesn't mean I won't.

Well, SMG2 should win that battle. But if EO2 was made by Miyamotto, it'd be game of all time!

    There.

    That's why.

    ...Touche, Santa.

Honestly, I may be in the minority when it comes to this, but I think Bioshock was weak in the shooting mechanic (more than made up for storytelling, visuals, and being generally fun--and I was more critical of the game that most). Guess I shouldn't be surprised that the first was big enough for the sequel to ride its coat-tails a bit longer whilst being fairly mediocre (from what I experienced).

For the record, I'm not arguing that the first game was any good (or bad). Only that people jizzed themselves over it. The inevitable big money sequel followed and Opty is more or less correct. These sorts of awards are about who paid for the recognition, not whether it was deserved.

Well, I think the innovation is that it's not just importing the save - it's importing the decisions you made as well. Considering the number of decisions you can make in ME1, I think it's fairly impressive that ME2 can theoretically operate in such a way as to take those decisions into account (note: I haven't actually played ME2, waiting for a Steam sale, so I don't know how well it's actually implemented). Most other save imports I've seen have been bonuses to start the game, or simply keeping some of the custom characters you had in the previous game. Though if you're talking about simply bringing character names / appearances over and general save importing, Magic Candle 2 beat out Mass Effect 2 by about 20 years. :P

I admit defeat to your godlike intellect. Also, I really should stop trying to get drunk on Listerine.

Glad to see our debates continue to be mutually intellectually enlightening.

At any rate, while Mass Effect imported an absolutely absurd amount of data/decisions from the previous game in a pretty cool manner, I probably wouldn't count it as an earth-shattering innovation.

I wouldn't say it was groundbreaking innovation. It was basically a set of bits stored on some choices you made in the first game that were looked at by the second game.

It wasn't anything that really made a big difference in the story overall, just simple things like which NPC ended up in charge of the Citadel and the like. The dialogue was practically the same, just from a different character.

Still, it's a lot more involved than the game save shenanigans we (didn't) get with Fable 3.

ME1 -> ME2 carried over and acknowledged quite a lot of choices. More than you'd think if you sat down and cataloged them.

As to how many of them actually affected the plot? Next to fucking none. A line here, a quest giver there, and so on. You extracted more out of the events if you imported, but those events didn't change one single bit.

Which while kinda crappy, is realistically the only way they could have handled things. If I remember right, they said that for the third game, since it's the finale, they now have the freedom to go hogwild with choices/consequences.

Well, never mind about what I said then. It sounds like the implementation of the ME2 import system isn't all that great. It does seem to be more than I've heard of in other games, but if it had about as much impact on the game as other games with save importing, then it's probably not all that noteworthy.

From that xplay list, I think it's kind of absurd that Kirby's Epic Yarn isn't on there for art direction. Or for soundtrack.

Too much time in Europe, or during the wrong time frame? Thats why I can't. I was there for 10 years, during the hoof and mouth epidemic. Thats a problem for blood takers here in the US.

Homosexuals are forbidden to donate blood in the US. Because we're all filthy.

    I can't donate blood because I'm british.

I'm glad to see the Naruto game getting some love in the animation category. That game actually has the best use of cel-shading I've ever seen.

Wait Disney actually put Tron up on PSN? I might have to do some Review-research now because I was fairly certain that Disney was anti-PSN.

    xplay's GOTY nominee lists:

    Best Gameplay Innovation

    3. Mass Effect Saves

What? Mass Effect 2 is not the first game to allow importing a save from a previous game. Off the top of my head I can think of .hack for PS2 and Golden Sun for GBA.

I am sure I'd see other silly things if I read the entire list.

I personally found the emails that boiled down to "Look at us, we're totally reading your save bits!" a bit silly. They can make a half dozen promotional sets of armor for retailer pre-orders or purchase DLC, but can't spare a single quantifiable bonus for any of your decisions, not even some money?

I'd have more faith that they'd actually be able to do something useful if they were able to actually give worthwhile choice and consequences in a single game in the first place. Rather than what amounts to the same extra lines of dialogue (with no real impact on anything else) for your binary good/evil choice, except in the middle of the next game, as opposed to in the epilogue.

These sorts of awards are about who paid for the recognition, not whether it was deserved.
Nah, Deadly Premonition was on the list. Though that could have just been a token one thrown in to make it look like they weren't doing anything evil like that.
