My psychiatrist prescribed me Proranolol (10mg, 1 to 3 as needed) in addition to my other medication (which he changed and upped the dose of) and I'm just wondering if someone here has taking it before and how it made you feel.
I'm not worried about it making me a zombie or anything like that, but I'm just curious about any effects it might have. From how he and the pharmacist described it, it might make me tired and if I was asthmatic it might cause an attack (I'm not, so no worries there).
Heh, anxiety over anxiety medication.

Just to let you know, anxiety over anxiety medicine is very common!

Any info you'd get here would be anecdotal. I know it can be reassuring, but you really want to read the literature very carefully and not try to stress out too much. If it affects you very badly, you'll stop and your doctor will give you something else. Good luck!

Propanolol is a pretty commonly used drug. It's most often used for high blood pressure, but you can give it to people for anxiety, especially performance anxiety. It's in a class of drugs called "beta blockers." It blocks beta adrenergic receptors (part of your sympathetic "fight or flight" nervous system) in your heart that respond to adrenaline. So, this will decrease the physical symptoms of anxiety (racing heart, etc) and hopefully make you less anxious overall. This is helpful, because sometimes those symptoms can cause a kind of snowball effect with anxiety - you're a little anxious, your heart rate increases, which makes you more anxious, you realize you're getting more anxious, which makes you more anxious, and so on.
Most people seem to tolerate it pretty well. Potentially, it can cause weird dreams, make you tired, decrease your exercise tolerance, make it more difficult to get an erection, along with some other things. These don't always happen, they are just possibilities. Your pharmacist and doctor can give you a full list if you want.
So, basically, this is a helpful, generally well tolerated, widely used drug. Hopefully it will help you out. If you have any problems with it, it's not working, or you don't like the side-effects, be sure to tell your doctor.
My doc gave me a 'script a while ago for propanolol, for when I start feeling a panic/anxiety attack coming on. Helps take the edge off, but it won't fully prevent one all on its own.... it does give you a bit more time to deal with it via other strategies (in my case, deep breathing and talking myself down, typically) Personally, I've never had any side effects from taking it, but I also take it very rarely these days (yay!)
Well, I took it. It was actually kind of a weird feeling. Not bad and definitely helped, just kind of strange (though really it could be a mix of the two medications). Did feel tired though. Not really sleepy, just sort of a lack of energy.
Pretty common with propranolol. My g/f was on it for a while and she was almost always blah feeling with it. You may want to ask about an alternative to it.
bowen on
