The beta should be announced around mid November-early December, although I wouldn't be surprised if it was held until January. Still pretty excited for this game, and with the beta coming in late 2011, hopefully the game will follow up before/during Q2 of next year.
Well all we know currently is that the closed beta will start in 2011. It may or may not be publicly announced. ANet hasn't said whether there will be sign-ups or anything like that yet unfortunately.

I really hope there will be signups. They've already been constantly internally testing it and have expressed a genuine desire to get the game in our hands for more when the time is right. The demos have shown the game is already fuck awesome to interact with and play and pretty polished; the main issues remaining appear to be testing game systems on a larger scale and deciding how to manage servers and population balance. A closed beta somewhat along the lines of SWTOR's current one would be perfect, if still leaving Joe Gamer sacrificing tribal fetishes to the Gods of Chaos for an invite.
We won't have to wait long before we know either way.
Not... -really-. I mean what we saw was polished as all hell, but they don't even have the starting experiences for all the races ready enough for them to show off. Plus all we saw was a Level 50-60ish zone.
Now what we've seen is impressive as hell, and if the rest of the game is like that fuck yeah. But it isn't yet.
Yeah the game basics are obviously done nicely. They just need to put in all that juicy content, finish the 8th profession, and then balance the lot. But who knows how long that will actually take
At this point I would just be satisfied knowing all 8 professions.
And so you can all see how superior the Engineer is to every other class.
About the only thing keeping me from going hog wild crazy with an engineer and committing to it as a main is the fear that it'll be over populated. Which is a pretty stupid reason to not choose an awesome looking class actually.
Mostly just huntin' monsters.

Especially if you consider that you can successfully do content with a group made entirely of the same class.

Yep. Thing is we'll all be so different. There're so many different ways to go with it that it just won't matter.
This makes me happy. I was all gung ho about the guardian but ever since the release of the engineer info every time I try to think about guardian builds I start drifting back to engineer hotness. Engineers are just so dynamic and adaptable.

I'm really hopeful that there wont ever become a "best" weapon/trait choice. Perhaps something that might be a little more useful outright in some situations, but if I want to stomp around with a Hammer and Mace+Shield on my Warrior just fine I'd be happy.
I agree. I'd like to just go with how I feel at the time. I loved spirits in GW and I'll probably have a proclivity to bringing atleast 1-2 turrets. I don't care how sub-optimal they may be based on whatever numbers people bring up. If they work for me I will use them.
Also poison grenades. How can one go wrong with poison grenades?

As long as people realize that a CLOSED BETA is a god damned BETA. BETABETABETA.
They won't. To the general gaming population, a beta is a demo, no matter if its closed or public. And as a demo, it obviously represents the finished product in every single way and should be the basis of game reviews.

Closed betas can still be proper, and by anets track record on this it probably will be (as in they will probably invite several pvp guilds, a larger group of people but probably cap out at well under 500 over alpha). Open betas are pretty much still free publicity, plus they test things like servers, shards and make sure everything is ready-to-go for release, as the best way to test the servers is to slam it with a ton of people.
But if they are some legitimate assistance with sussing out bugs before release (which a closed beta should be in my opinion) they should find good dedicated people who love the game and want to help it be better.
Might I suggest this forum thread ANet? I'm a detail oriented person who wants your game to be fuckawesome and I will devote my life to playing EVERY CHARACTER CLASS AND RACE COMBINATION TO ENSURE IT IS. GIVE ME YOUR GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME!
Ahem.
So yeah, a closed beta invite would be really nice.

Hah, yeah, people helping with bugs.
Remember when GW launched, and they had that /bug command? Where you could do something like "/bug this monster is stuck in the terrain geometry at this location"? That ended up being turned off. Because this is what they were getting reported.
/bug ANET you suck do UAS
/bug UAS now
/bug Why are my skills locked? I want UAS
/bug PVP sucks ANET you lost a customer UAS now
Like, thousands of these a day. The general public doesn't want to 'test'. They want to play. This is why open betas are considered 'demos' but the general gaming population. Granted, this was at launch in the retail game, but hey, it's an MMO, bugs at launch are expected, which is why it was done. But give people an avenue to get a message to you directly, and it won't be used constructively.
Edit: Has there been much of substance from ANet since the PvP week? Having melted my laptop processors, keeping track of these things became somewhat arduous around that time.

It was something added to the final beta weekend for last minute testing, a button in PvP creation that said 'Unlock all skills for this Beta Event only'. People expected it to be in the retail game.
To be fair, they had a point. Having skills unlocked in PvE is okay, since PvE players don't mind progression. In the competitive e-sport scene, it creates a severe entry requirement of hundreds of hours before everything is unlocked or, as they did later, buying the unlocks through the store. When you're playing competitively, not giving everyong the same tools is a huge problem. It's also something they've fixed for GW 2. Go to a PvP area, all skills are unlocked (and upgrades and armour and weapons are maxed) for the duration.
However, the endless droning about it eventually got to Arenanet. They quite simply did not want to do it for GW 1. I recall one of their CR people referred to them as the 'vocal minority' at one point, which started a whole new shitstorm and he had to make a public apology about it.

Yeah, but that's actually not a prblem, since it's not meant to be balanced. Its like alliance battles, somewhere you go to fight other people showing off your gear you found.
The e-sport PvP gametypes are something different. If you're turning it into a competition (and they did, with world tournaments, cash prizes and teams being flown around the world to compete), then don't force people to spend hundreds of hours unlocking things.
Just like they shouldn't force people to PvP for stuff to make yourself better in pve, they shouldnt force people to pve in order to get what you need to properly pvp.
Thats what they kinda did in GW1 until they finally introduced faction (actually it took a while for them to get the numbers right, at first you needed to play like 200 games of RA in order to unlock ONE skill). But even that it took a lot of grinding pvp to get what you needed to pvp... and even then there are items you still cannot obtain in pvp that you can in pve and use in pvp. Like double vamp sets. And negative health sets etc. Req 8 weapons etc.
I quite liked the bit where they just asked what the devs were each currently working on in the development process.
Players were able to observe a day / night cycle was implemented in the game. What are the changes in the environment resulting from this cycle?
Ben Miller: Actually yes, the day / night cycle affects the game environment. For example, some dynamic events appear only at night. Similarly, some monsters appear only during the day or night. The entire environment reacts, including NPCs. For example, the villagers return home at night when the guards come out to patrol at night.
In addition, the sound environment is different. At dusk you might hear a wolf howling at the moon while at dawn, the birds start to sing. All this should allow the player to feel that it operates in a "real" world. Nevertheless, we do not that players must wait for the day or night to do this or that. For this, we tried to keep a balance in the content available and linked to the hours in.
Awesome 8-)
Concerning the system of inter-combos, can you tell me how many of these combos are already established in the game?
Ben Miller: Actually, it is also one aspect of the game that we are actively working right now. We have information about it arriving very, very, very, VERY soon. The example of physical projectiles passing through a wall of fire is the best known. Spells creating such zones can effect mostly be used in the same way by the players. But again, we will deliver more details on these combos soon.
So more info on cross-profession combos soon. Something to look forward to. Some people are speculating that it might relate to the 8th profession.

I believe they were a fair representation of the population of gamers, yes.
They were playing the wrong game. They should try Angry Birds.
