Oh god. The thought of cross class ability combos being a strategy has me salivating.
Whenever we move from dynamic event to dynamic event, we'll know where you've been by the trail of saliva you left on the ground. And we'll think to ourselves, "Man, we should go put a firewall down in front of him so he can shoot arrows through it. Or walk through it which would be hilarious."
I can't wait till I can throw one of those bad boys and hurt all enemies and allies with a demoralizing and lound rendition of "Every rose has it's Thorn"

We'll call it the Steam Wall Gambit. His saliva will turn into steam and we'll throw metal objects through it hyper heating them up.
It'll be awesome.
Mostly just huntin' monsters.

There's actually a trait that turns all your traps into ground-targeted effects that you can "throw" from a range. Imagine throwing a Barbed Trap on someone in Guild Wars!
I... what... awesome.

I can't wait to see what you could do with this in WvWvW. Like throwing down a minefield from the top of a castle wall.

Yeah, yeah, so it's Halloween, whatever. They've already started the commercials here in the States, ArenaNet needs to get into the holiday spirit and give us more of this game.
I think the ranger is also one of the least "done" professions though, since a lot of people have said they don't like pets as they are.
Can't blame 'em for not liking them. In every game they're a nuisance that never attack the right target, pull aggro all over the place and put a serious dent in your DPS when they inevitably die. Based on reports, it's even worse in Guild Wars 2 because they die if a mob even looks at them funny.
There was a really pathetic video from when they first showed the game at Gamescom last year. They was playing a ranger and at some point the bear pet went up against a single bandit... and lost. It's a fucking bear fer chrissakes, it should've mauled the bandit's face off in a single half-assed swipe.
Included in that article is a quote saying that ANet is aware of the pet issues and that they are going to update the mechanics before release (and they are already updating the AI).
If the AI was good enough with pets, I wouldn't mind less control of them. I liked how the dog was handled in Fable 2. Something along those lines, more support/less combat, would be cool in my opinion.
Minor update on the last profession: ANet seems to be implying that we will not see the 8th profession reveal until the 2nd half of Nov at the earliest.

Makes sense, cant really reveal a profession based around control when the mechanics of the game are not yet hammered down.
Like when they removed mana entirely, that removed an element the mesmer had some control over in guild wars. Mesmers in GW2 might be more focused on the illusion lines from the first game.
It seems to be tied into general mob AI which ANet is currently working on across the game world. Pets are a part of that AI polishing it seems.
But I take that as a given as part of the development process. What has me more interested is that it seems ANet may iterate the profession to really expand on the "synergistic" quality of the Ranger+pet combo.

I assume this will also extend to Necromancer minions and Engineer turrets.

I don't think so. For the Necro and Engineer, the pets and such are addons. They are skills you can take or not as you see fit. (although obviously they'll work on AI improvements for them too)
The issue with the Ranger is the pet is their special class thing. The same as Death Shroud or Attunments or Virtues. And thus it is, or should be, integral to the class and actually work well.
Thankfully, the Dev's comments on the current pets are, shall we say, HARSH. They seem to be fully aware of it sucking complete ass and needing lots of work and are rather annoyed at it's current state.
Nobody will complain much if minions are dumb, they're easily replaceable and they don't really have...brains. Turrets don't move. Pets need to be some sort of mobile extension of the ranger.
With the GW Halloween events this year, I found myself getting excited about the prospect of holiday events in GW2. With the new events system and weather effects, they should be better than ever.

I wonder if the GW2 holiday events will follow the calendar style of WoW (i.e, valentines and easter and stuff early, a summer event, thanksgiving, halloween and christmas) or if they'll do some things differently. WoW had a mix of real life holidays modified for the game world and fake season styled or lore styled holidays.
Like for Halloween, it's the one time of the year when The Mad King Thorn has power over Tyria and he makes things spooky and tricky, changing people into random creatures.

The first Halloween event was awesome. It came out of nowhere. All of a sudden "LIONS ARCH IS CHANGED!" started spreading through guild chat, PMs, team chats in missions and local chat in towns. Stuff gradually got added, and culminated in Mad King Thorn appearing and giving out useless hats that were awesome. Other events felt a bit... less for knowing what to expect. But that first event, with districts fucking packed and everyone in one location emoting along with Thorn was awesome.
I was more a fan of that first simple event than I was with later events adding holiday grind missions for more useless stuff.

Maybe they will surprise us with cool events during the first year and go from there.

Remember the end of the world events in Guild Wars prophecies beta?
Those combos sound great. Every day GW2 isn't out is grey and lifeless.
To call it a tortured existence would be somewhat of a misnomer, a hopeful but ultimately foolish implication of existence as a basic element of life without Guild Wars 2.

Betabetabetabetabetabetabeta. (Technically, alpha.. really.)
If they pull it off, Ranger could move way up my list.. depending on what the finished result is like.

"You mean, like... one of the frog people?"
"No I mean a fucking 10 story OH GOD THE TONGUE IT HURTS"
Pets dying easily shows they haven't gotten balance right for them. Which I expect in an alpha.

Well too bad.

It's fucking Gondor.
Info on ranger pets, the engineer toolbelt and cross profession combos.
Edit: They needed more things to make me want to play an engineer, apparently.

Oh well, that's what rebinding is for.
I would suspect I'm rebinding a lot anyways...but I have a G-keyboard with programmable keys and macros so...yeah. I do that anyways.
