Once you get the quest... talk to the looter at Lake Calenhad. Then, talk to the 'second-hand' salesman just outside Orzammar's gates. Then talk to Dwynne the dwarf in Redcliffe.

It's useful to take Sten along.
Taking Sten with you for those is the best.
"You looking for a sword?"
"No, but my large, angry friend here is."
"I never seen that sword."
"All right. Sten, rip his arms off."
Going back a bit... I'm pretty sure the "donations" for your army do have an effect. Don't they determine how many troops you get of that type? I could've sworn that my number of mages was different depending on how many potions I gave them.
Also, for Awakening, doesn't it assume you're playing a new Orlesian Grey Warden if your imported warden is dead?
I haven't touched DA for almost a year, now that I think about it.

That's interesting. I did not realize that at all and now I'm curious about what more he would have to say. I just wish he wasn't so awful at fighting.
It sucks that 2hander's are absolute bollocks in DA. If you're on the PC, use the respec potion mod to change him to dual wield or sword 'n board.
But honestly, I just took him everywhere. He's good for the occasional stun or aoe attack, and the stuff he says is great. He's really worth having around.

I thought it just gave you free EXP. I gained a few levels by just donating materials to my army.

Not just party banter, but Sten has some of the best interjections in the world, bar none. For example, take him to the docks at Lake Calenhad the first time you go there.
Sten actually has the most extensive camp dialogue available, you just have to get him to open up. Remember, he was sent on a mission to scout the land, so it makes sense that the more he sees, the more he has to say, but if you simply keep him at camp, he won't have observed anything thereby limiting what he might be willing to discuss. Sten is unique in that he gains more topics to talk about in camp when he's made an observation at certain points in the world. Some of these places are...
* When exiting the Redcliffe Chantry for the first time.
* When entering the Circle Tower for the first time.
You can tell you've 'unlocked' these when he makes a comment, such as, "So this is where humans get their wisdom?" or "So this is the prison you keep your mages?" There's another one about kids, but I can't remember where it's triggered.
"Where did you get those cookies?"
"I took them away from an abnormally large child. I don't think he'll need them"
"You stole cookies from a child?"
*Not the exact quote, but I remember it being pretty close.
They need to show more stuff like this, because after viewing that, no one should complain that Dragon Age 2 is ugly. It looked so much more improved than Origins. I also approve of this character.

"For his own good."
He's a great big softie, too.
Leliana: I saw what you were doing back there.
Sten: Oh?
Leliana: Don't play innocent with me.
Sten: What are you talking about?
Leliana: You. Playing with that kitten.
Sten: ...There was no kitten.
Leliana: Sten, I saw you. You dangling a piece of twine for it.
Sten: I was helping it train.
Leliana: You're a big softie!
Sten: We will never speak of this again.
Leliana: Softie!
And his missing sword is ripe for all sorts of jokes.
Zevran: So, your sheath is empty, then, my qunari friend?
Sten: My sheath?
Zevran: You do not seem to be rising to the occasion.
Sten: I do not know which is worse, you or the dwarf.
Zevran: Oh, I am, assuredly. He gets all his best lines from me.
Oghren: Lost your weapon, did you?
Sten: What of it?
Oghren: Swinging an empty scabbard, then?
Sten: ...
Oghren: Your pike was purloined?
Sten: "Purloined?" Did you have to look that one up?
Oghren: The elf gave me that one. You have to admit, it's good.
Sten: (Sigh)
I liked Shale but whoever wrote her really, really failed on the whole 'lets make Shale hate birds, because birds poop on statues right? lolz' bit. Everytime it was mentioned it felt horribly forced to try and make her that kind of 'character', but it was more akin to a Terry Pratchett [Discworld] characterisation without any of the intelligence or humour.

For those who were curious, I wrote the Dwarf Commoner, Orzammar and the Deep Roads, and some early bits of the Landsmeet for Origins.
Cool. I played through all the origins pre-first-playthrough to determine who would be my warden and to my surprise, I liked the Dwarf Commoner the best. Though it probably helped that she was a dwarf warrior by the name of Pella.

Sten is awesome and if you disagree you're wrong.
Alistair: Were you really locked up in that cage for twenty days?
Sten: It may have been more like thirty. I stopped counting after a while.
Alistair: What did you do? Twenty days is a long time.
Sten: On good days, I posed riddles to passers-by, offering treasures for the correct answers.
Alistair: Really?
Sten: No.
Shale was great! Her dialogue was pretty funny, and she had a unique skillset that was awesome.
After using the Golem in the Fade, Shale was a complete and total disappointment.
You're giving Shale too little credit and I doubt you actually took her with you much of anywhere. While the birds/humans ragging is a little overdone, it's nowhere near as run into the ground as HK-47 and unlike HK-47 there is a genuine person underneath as evidenced by her personal quest and interacting with the Dwarves.
Also I feel like the birds/humans thing is a bit of a natural consequence of being A) Still sane and Having had to stand in place, unmoving, fully conscious for 50~ years. Some surliness goes with the territory.
To get the full effect from the conversations between Sten and Morrigan requires some lead-in, but it's worth it.
* Sten: Do you know of the kasaanda? The... sundew, in the common tongue?
* Morrigan: I do not believe so.
* Sten: No? You are so alike, I thought you kindred.
* Morrigan: What is that supposed to mean? What is the sundew?
* Sten: A flower.
* Morrigan: Oh? I am a flower, am I? How unexpected.
* Sten: That entraps and devours insects.
* Morrigan: Ah, now that I expected. (Chuckles)
* Morrigan: So are you going to continue staring at me as if I am covered in eels?
* Sten: Eels would be something.
* Morrigan: Prudery! How charming. I expected paranoia. This is much better. I prefer to be stared at lustfully, if at all.
* Sten: Keep trying, then.
* Morrigan: Oh? Then shall I demonstrate an act or two? And you may tell me hot or cold?
* Sten: I'll save time. Cold.
* Morrigan: (Chuckles) You are a tease.
* Morrigan: So have you changed your mind, Sten? I dream about you and I, if you must know.
* Sten: You would, even were I interested in a small thing like you. The qunari act is... unpleasant.
* Morrigan: Unpleasant? Unpleasant how? Now I really am interested.
* Sten: Deadly.
* Morrigan: And what if I didn't mind? I enjoy a little... animation.
* Sten: You'd be less animated afterward.
* Morrigan: It sounds as if I am arousing your passions already, my dear Sten.
* Sten: Parshaara. Why do you pester me?
* Morrigan: (Chuckles) Because 'tis amusing, that is why.
* Morrigan: You seem so deep in thought, my dear Sten. Thinking of me, perhaps? The two of us, together at last?
* Sten: Yes.
* Morrigan: I... what did you say?
* Sten: You will need armor, I think. And a helmet. And something to bite down on. How strong are human teeth?
* Morrigan: How strong are my teeth?
* Sten: Qunari teeth can bite through leather, wood, even metal given time. Which reminds me, I may try to nuzzle.
* Morrigan: Nuzzle?
* Sten: If that happens, you'll need an iron pry bar. Heat it in a fire, first, or it may not get my attention.
* Morrigan: Perhaps it would be better if we did not proceed.
* Sten: Are you certain? If it will satisfy your curiosity...
* Morrigan: Yes. Yes, I think it is best.
Have they announced any changes or additions to the class structure?
I'd really like to see them add a few more class options to the Dragon Age mythos. Monks being my top choice.
I'd also like to see certain existing classes improved and overhauled, such as bard.
No, same classes. They also announced they will definitely not be adding monks or unarmed fighters to the game because they thought it didn't fit the setting.

No. If you import a dead Warden, your Warden will be alive and the game will act like you took Morrigan up on her offer.

Man, I need to get over my fear of pre-ordering just so's I can cancel my pre-order over that slight.

That actually would have made me cancel my pre-order.

I also deliberately got Zaeed killed in ME2, because he needed it.
