The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I believe the consensus was that for the time being the server would be set on peaceful, being as how the underdark is up and running and focused around mobs. PvP I have heard nothing about since the discussion some time ago, but a lot of people have either been too busy lately from exams/finals or just taking a break so the server hasnt had much activity.
The plan was initially for PvP to designate a day for it and back up the map beforehand. Then for that day the server would be PvP open and any damage done to structures/materials lost/anything else done would be rolled back to right before the PvP started. I guess mobs may also get turned on in this time period then turned off again, but im not sure.
Biiilllll! So uhh, you wanted to fiddle around with the BiomeTerrain Mod? I has values for you. I've got some pretty crazy SSP maps saved up. Also, from what I've noticed about the way maps work with the biome mod, it's alot easier to generate the map in singleplayer, then just rename it and slap it in the server. The SMP version of the generator has some weird habit of making the maps super laggy and unstable. I did a few random maps with my friends on my server and we all agreed that when I would generate the map in singleplayer first, then move it over to the server, it was alot smoother.
We should have an ocean-less world with floating snow islands. I have the values for that. It's pretty epic. Your only source of water is the waterfalls and lakes in the floating mountains
Edit: Protip when using floating islands in the Biome Terrain Mod. Digging straight down in regular maps will usually result in a face full of WTF IT BURNS. With the islands...digging down usually results in a half mile free fall

is falling 800 meters really any better than falling 8 meters into a lava pit?

you get more time to contemplate your death and the beautiful scenery your body will be crushing against.
Don't you mean more time to type /home?
Also, the newest version of Borderlands has the ability to designate a given area as pvp or not. Soooo, really we could just select a chunk of the map and say "Ok kill each other here". I'm really hoping he figures out a way to selectively turn on monster spawning too...
Edit to webguy: Yeah, that's exactly what I was expecting. Thanks for the info!
I have this real big urge to play on a survival multiplayer server that is themed after an instance of dwarf fortress. Collaborative fortress building!

Minecraft Beta: December 20, 2010
The next epoch is upon us! The skies are trembling, pigs are growing wings, and the nether is turning awfully cold, as Minecraft slowly crawls out of Alpha..
Minecraft will reach Beta status on December 20th, 2010.
With Beta comes a larger focus on polish and content, and we’ll start early on with adding proper modding support with a stable API, and we’d love all input we can get on this from the modders out there. We’ll also add some kind of non-intrusive narrative to the game to help drive the game experience early on, and to provide some kind of late game goal. There will be a bigger focus on testing and stability as well, with more time between updates.
When the game enters beta, the price will rise to 14.95 Euro.
We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise.
Buying the game during beta will include all updates up until release, of course, and bug patches will be free.
Soon, you will be able to buy gift codes for Minecraft, perfectly timed for the holidays! Even better, if you buy those before December 20, accounts created from these codes will count as alpha accounts, and will receive all future updates for free.
And the next game update (with server-side inventory) is coming next week, before Beta
I have realized that I am not waiting for singleplayer updates
as I am waiting on updates to singleplayer,
so that I can get excited about updates being implemented into multiplayer.
It's kind of like waiting on something to look forward to.
I don't think there will be much of note in the beta update, serverside inventory is coming out first. Probably it just means he'll stop breaking stuff so much.

i don't know if it's like this on all servers, but on your server /home while falling keeps all your inertia and still makes you explode, just wherever your /home is

kinda cheesy, but i guess worth it if you've got a lot of stuff and are far away

but yes, it's a lot easier to pick your stuff back up if you /home, it just won't save you a death, is all

well, considering dropping your stuff is the only negative effect of death..
oh i guess your armor takes a hit too
plus shame
horrible devastating shame
Shame?
If I felt shame at dying in this game, I would have died of some sort of shame overdose shortly after I first played it. I must have died at least 30 times by now...

Oh dear.
Finally got around to getting this game and figured I'd play for an hour or so once I got home from work.
Started off building a simple log cabin on an island, four hours later ended up with the first story of my sweet new cobblestone fort on top of my primary mine.

Beta release? That's pretty exciting.

So now every time I close Minecraft it leaves a text document error log on my desktop.

What the shit?
I have the same problem. If you want too ignore it, you can create a folder for minecraft.exe, and add a shortcut to your desktop. It will continue to create some text document but they will be in the folder instead of on your desktop.
II kinda wish you guys would stop pretending that java is the problem. Its not a shitty platform no matter what Steve Jobs says. Its pretty much just notch not knowing what he's doing with netcode.

I guess everyone's really getting bored of this game.
Its up to date, as its done and uploaded automatically. Why are you surprised?

I have to make sure not to play much today.
I have things to do.
Twitch (I stream most days of the week)
Twitter (mean leftist discourse)
I'll take it
(another thing I will gladly take when it comes out is snow falling from the sky again)
Fucking seriously.

I think it's related to an error in java.
I'm sorry
