I had a really long rant written about how after getting to level 83, I am really quite unhappy with what Cataclysm had done to WoW....but it was just too ranty in the end. Suffice it to say, I hate what Cataclysm has done to WoW. At first I was really in to it, then the closer I got to 85 the more I realized how grindy it was becoming. Mobs take forever to kill, it becomes harder and harder to survive multi-mob fights, the gear just doesn't keep pace as far as DPS numbers are concerned (while I've gained 30k health and 20k mana since 80, my DPS stats are roughly what they were at 80, while fighting mobs with 3x the health).
*sighs* I had such high hopes for Cata, and it revitalizing the game, but right now...color me disappointed. This isn't the WoW I want to play.
You're ranting that the game got harder? It's an MMO. If you're ranting about grind, you should likely take a break.
It didn't get harder, it got grindy. This idea that because it's an MMO, it just supposed to be a big god damn grind is dumb. Say what you want about WoTLK, but you felt like a hero. You felt like a badass. If you feel like a badass in Cata, you're either dumb or lying.
Harder is not the mobs have more HP while your capacity to do damage stays equivalent.. That's grindy. Harder is better AI, better scripting, more group quests.
Shadow with Dark Evangelism and Archangel. My spec is correct, I am rotating the spells correctly. My DPS stats are as high as they possible could be. I am correctly using Shadow Orbs. It takes me forever to kill things.
I feel like a badass in Cata, I'm not dumb or lying.
I went from 80 to 85 in Cata far faster than I went from 70 to 80 in Wrath and I've done far, far more epic things in Cata questline wise. In Cata you character is definitely treated like a hero by the NPCs.
Speaking of Tol Barad dailies, does every person get the same dailies each day? Because I swear more than once I've seen people doing the daily I had gotten the day before but not on the current day. I mean, I guess it's possible they picked it up the day before but didn't have a chance to do it, but it seems weird that I've seen it happen more than once.
Also, is Shark Tank the only group daily? It's the only one I've gotten thus far, and I only got it once (though some of the other "boss" targets would certainly be easier in a group considering how much more of a pain it is to fight multiple mobs at once now, but they aren't elites or marked as a group quest like Tank).
I've not been that often, but in Northern Tol Barad, I think people can get different quests, as I grouped with a priest who picked up the dailies with me at the same time, and he had one quest different to me (he had to shoot some cannon, while I had to pick up rifles).
With regards to Southern Tol Barad, 3 I think are always the same (mopping up 15 npc troops, the croc meat, the wondering elite), while the other 3 change after every battle.
I had to go to the demon cellblock, but while finishing off one of the quests, the 15 minute warning popped up and everything despawned. When the game ended, and the daily quest npc's re-appeared in the middle, they were giving out quests to go to the ghost cell block area, and I was unable to hand in the demon quests.

Maybe it's just my class then. Are any other Shadow Priests having issues leveling? Again, one mob, I do alright, though it takes forever to kill and drains my mana horrible. Two mobs? Almost certain death.
45 second mob kills sound awful(and questionable).
However, 5 second mob kills are certainly too fast.
In heirlooms, level 80 quest mobs in Wrath were dying in 2-3 casts: Immolate, Conflagrate, Chaos Bolt.
From the second I stepped into Hyjal, mobs were lasting Soul Fire > Immolate > CoE > Conflagrate > Chaos Bolt > Incinerate x1 or x2.
I vastly prefer the second experience to the first.
Though it could also be that I have more tools to deal with adds. Mob grinding now requires slightly more thought, and some people don't like to have to think about their grinding. Different strokes and all that.
Which class do you guys feel has been the most improved game-play wise? One of the things I love about these expansions is the chance to start somewhat anew with a different main character.
I have three 80's I am trying to decide between and not sure which to mess around with first. Warrior, Rogue, Paladin.
The Arms tree looks amazing for Warriors, but I'm pretty unsure with all the Paladin changes how much fun Ret is going to be. Rogues look the same to me as far as talent trees are concerned, outside of combo points not being lost now and having a self heal, I don't see much different with them.
Paladins. While I still get bored tanking - I still have way more fun than I did, and I feel like I've got more tricks up my sleeve. Before we didn't really have AOE aggro capabilities, but with Holy Wrath, Consecrate and now a refreshing on hit Avengers Shield - hoooo daddy!
It didn't get harder, it got grindy.
What game have YOU been playing. Also, as someone said, it has taken me less time to level in Cata than it did in WoTLK or hell BC - AND the scenery, aesthetic is tons more engaging. I've only done Vash on my character and am lvl 84 - at some point I'll have to start working on Deepholm or - something else. But a grind - not even close.
45 second mob kills sound awful(and questionable).
However, 5 second mob kills are certainly too fast.
If one mob took 45 seconds - I'd say I was doing something wrong. . .10 seconds maybe 15 depending on the mob. 5 seconds - no way. I like that it's not "business as usual" anymore in Cata. Mobs actually have abilities that can screw you up - and you need to actually watch your health and not play on auto-pilot.
As someone said, on my Lock - it's Immolate, Conflag (before they took out the stun I guess), Chaos, and then an incenerate if they were still alive. All of this happening in a few seconds. On my Paladin, in Vash - I frequently had to switch to Prot spec because I knew there were going to be multiple mobs bashing on me, which would end up with my death. Insanity. But welcomed.
I got both my rogue and warlock to 82 last night I would ahve done more if it was not for someone on the allaince who harassed me over getting a transmute I do not know right now nor do I think anyone else knows

I think part of the problem I have as a Shadow Priest is that PW:S is terrible now. It got nerfed so hard if you aren't Disc, that I wonder why I cast it sometimes. It absorbs 5400 damage at level 83. That's usually one, max two, hits from equal level mobs. Once PW:S is down, even with Inner Fire, even with Shadow Form, I am laid bare to be rolled over by the truck hitting mobs. This gets exacerbated something terrible when more than one mob is hitting me. Maybe my issue isn't with my damage so much as my survivability as a Shadow Priest.
Maybe Shadow shouldn't be the preferred leveling spec anymore. Perhaps I need to try a Smite spam Disc or Holy spec.
I haven't quested at all in Twilight Highlands but it didn't feel grindy to me at all. Uldum was a nice change of pace but the whole Harrison Jones questline made me feel badass the whole way.
On my paly it would take prob go around 10 seconds to 20 seconds average per kill. Ill have to completely reforge her gear for ret, but it isnt my main spec. So i could prob shave a couple seconds off. In the earlier levels 80-83.5 things were fine. The pace was fine. Then all of a sudden, as soon as mobs started hitting 75k HP(this first happens in Deepholm when you have to get the 3 auras) you notice a bump up in healh/damage from the mobs. Then it started getting problematic. For 10 second kills ill still have to have full holy power and crit with TV(HAHAHAHH my 7% crit is a joke) and exorcism.
Switch to my mage and its average 4 seconds to 8 second average to maybe 14 seconds tops for mobs with over 100k health. Im not joking. 2x arcane blasts if one crits its usually dead, if not arcane barrage and its dead. If it has over 100k health. It will take prob 2 blasts, missiles, 2 blasts, barrage and it should be dead. Its very rare when a mob would make it to me at all. If it comes anywhere close it gets frost novad, and i blink out with extra speed boost, get to max range and he dies before he gets any closer.
It really depends on the class. On my mage i feel uber, on my paly.. not even close.
Oh and i need to say tihs again, Twilight highlands sucked.. the quests sucked(the arena was awesome) the zone sucked, the scenery sucked(except for the dwarf hobbit lookin village) It was a BOOOOORING zone. Uldum has gone on to be my Fav zone. But to be honest, i think the amount of quests and time spent in these zones is too long. Its gettin to me.
I am not positive about this but from what my buddies said in the beta I think they might have scaled it back a bit even. I remember my buds in the beta stating that even as plate multi lvl mobs at 84+ was bad news. I didnt have this experience lvln my warrior. Sure I couldnt take 5+ mobs as arms but I could take 2 or 3 pretty easily.
Anyone else notice how stingy Cataclysm seems to be with weapons? So far I've done every zone aside from Hyjal, and throughout all the quests I've only seen one of each kind of one handed weapon as a reward, with the exception of the fist weapon, which I haven't seen at all.

I'd take on 5 right now as Prot, maybe even more. As Arms? Yeah, wouldn't go above 3 to be safe.
In reality, I could probably go 4-5 as Arms if I make sure to land every Victory Rush. Rendclap helps, here.

I leveled up as Disc (and a good chunk of it as holy in instances).
Shadow sucks for leveling imo. Great for grinding things you simply overpower and great dps in an instance... but bulked up shields and self healing through (hit capped) smite spam is borderline overpowered.

Shit dies slower, but not insanely slow. The thing is, they hit harder and alot of the classes heal themselves less. Though, stupidly, any class that used to have good self-healing now generally sucks and all the classes that just got it are ridiculous.
I have the 50,000 critters achievement tracked, so I can see when someone in the guild kills a critter. I can see your sins.
My guild got together and did a critter genocide last week. We were saddened to learn the reward requires Exalted guild status.
how, what, where? that is a hell of a lot of critters. I've been killing them consistently as I level arch but we are only at like 2k
We had a couple of people at the Deeprun Tram killing rats, a few people killing penguins, others scattered over the place. There's a Worgen area in Stonetalon with a lot of ravens that respawned quickly. We had 10-15 people working on it for a few hours, but only a few were in the high critter population/respawn areas.
Zerging the guild classic dungeonmaster achievement was more fun (three teams of four hit everything in under two hours).
I don't have the time to go dig, but pretty sure I saw a blue post a couple days ago that they were not happy specifically with shadow priest and ret dps and going to bump both of them up.
I feel like a badass in Cata, I'm not dumb or lying.

I certainly see a stinginess in unique weapon models. It seriously seems like there's maybe 3 or 4 total 2h sword models all the way through 5 mans.

The more I think about it, the more I realize my frustration really is with Shadow Priest survivability than it is with Cata as a whole. Shadow may still be premier damage spec for raiding/groups, but I am starting to seriously question it's usefulness for solo leveling. I'm going to go over to Priest thread and theory craft a bit about this.
It drives me nuts. I'm using the 2H sword from Stonecore (which is equivalent to a blue axe you get from questing in Deepholme) since 82.
As soon as you hit 84 go to twilight highlands and do crucible if you can. I am not sure if it is still a pain in the ass or not but the two hand sword you get out of there is very nice.

I just make it a point to kill nearby critters when it is convenient. There's something funny about bouncing an Avenging Shield off of a mouse and into an enemy.

Honestly, I noticed a big difference even at level 80, against Wrath mobs, on the ptr. I tried a shadow and a disc build way back then, with the premade gear, and shadow might have had a slight gain on killing speed, but suffered greatly in survivability.
I saw a somewhat similar thing happen with holy and ret pallies, but I guess base pally survivability skills are better than that of priests.

You are playing a squishy. You shouldn't be tanking multiple mobs. If you do get them, you have escape mechanisms. I believe there is a glyph to make psychic scream cause terror so the mobs don't run around. That will keep you safe. You have that one shadow skill to target one dude and do the same thing. Also dispearsion.
If you need to be invulnerable to feel like a "hero" then yeah, wrong game. I think some single player games let you do that. Real badasses enjoy working with everything they have to survive and feel like it happened cause they earned it, not because everything was significantly weaker than them.
As for taking too long to kill things, priests are one of the biggest ramp up classes in the game. As in, you start real slow then pick up damage. That's why they gave you mind spike, so you have a more direct damage option. It might come a little late though. But it would be impossible to make things challenging if they had less health than they have now. Some of the burst classes, like mages locks etc, can put out 40_60k in a few seconds, in other words, mobs with less than 80k would never touch them, and they have enough cc and escapes to get enough time to do it to another one if they get 2 or 3 at a time.

Well thats true. If i use holy power to heal from my paly its taking away from something else. With my warrior(low level 40ish) victory rush pops up on every fight almost and its free.. minus a gcd mind you but it does amazing damage and it heals me. Im not sure how good it scales for a warrior at higher levels, but i wouldnt be suprised if it healed for more than word of glory. And no im not going to stand there and cast a heal in mid battle as a ret paly. Im going to die even faster.
Man, I leveled no problems as Shadow over the weekend. I was taking on 2 to 3 mobs at a time too when I had to, you just have to use shadowfriend/archangel/dispersion regularly and you'll have no problem with mana. Also make sure you have SW-D and Spirit Tap glyphed and use SW-D to finish every mob you can.
As a Prot Warrior, I kill faster the more mobs I have on me up to 4 mobs. Doing Tol Barad dailies, where mobs hit the hardest and have the most HP in open zones, I can kill like 6+. But thats because victory rush heals me for 40k, I have 160k health and the DPS of a rogue.
Maybe I shouldn't comment as a lowbie prot warrior... after the revamp the spec seemed decently balanced, maybe even a little annoying in the late teens. Now that I hit my 40's I'm back to feeling so good it's broken. Like you I kill faster and end with more HP if I can pull 3+ at once. I will win DPS meters in instances easily unless DPS is great and either fully heirloomed or a couple levels higher than me. It's not skill either... I find myself tuning out and facerolling tclap/revenge/cleave, only now I throw rend in there at some point. I pray for casters in packs so I at least get to interrupt. Sigh, this is why I got bored last time.
There are a shit ton of DPS one handers. Like every instance has 2 or 3 of them, and they are all more or less the same. The exact same. Also, the itemization in heroic deadmines and SFK is awful. Since the items are just supercharged versions of the lower level ones. There is absolutely no items in Deadmines for a Tank, I haven't checked SFK but there might be a shield in there. Deadmines has 3 or 4 DPS one handers though.
If you need to be invulnerable to feel like a "hero" then yeah, wrong game. I think some single player games let you do that. Real badasses enjoy working with everything they have to survive and feel like it happened cause they earned it, not because everything was significantly weaker than them.
How's that high horse treating ya buddy? :P
I felt invulnerable leveling through all of Cata, so I definitely feel like there are some class imbalances going on. I burned through mobs pretty easily, if I pulled to many my felguards spin would burn them down. In fact it was an issue that he would kill things so fast that I couldn't tag them all/put enough damage on them all to count as having personally killed all the mobs. If shit really hit the fan (pulled way too many guys) I would just drop my infernal. If for some magical reason I was stuck between like 5 mob spawns at once that kept chain respawning (which did happen a couple times) I'd just pop on metamorphosis and turn on my immolation aura and hellfire spam.
I guess I don't rank highly on your real badass scale.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but are you grinding as ret in prot gear and complaining about how long it takes to kill things?

Sadly it will be that way until you reach 84+ instances where you have to be more careful. Even in the beginner Cata dungeons we facerolled through without CC with me doing 10k+dps on the trash pulls but as soon as I hit the 84+ zones it got tons more fun. I have to keep up agro, which means cleave and revenge, but also watch out for CCd mobs, mob abilites, mob positioning etc. I am having a blast. It feels more like BC 2.0. Its a good thing.

This, and the psychic scream glyph is very good too if you pull too many.
Also, use your shadowfiend and fade, it can tank mobs and some elites fairly well.

Maybe Shadow shouldn't be the preferred leveling spec anymore. Perhaps I need to try a Smite spam Disc or Holy spec.
I'd take on 5 right now as Prot, maybe even more. As Arms? Yeah, wouldn't go above 3 to be safe.
In reality, I could probably go 4-5 as Arms if I make sure to land every Victory Rush. Rendclap helps, here.

Shadow sucks for leveling imo. Great for grinding things you simply overpower and great dps in an instance... but bulked up shields and self healing through (hit capped) smite spam is borderline overpowered.
It's probably more your survivability you are noticing then anything.
Shit dies slower, but not insanely slow. The thing is, they hit harder and alot of the classes heal themselves less. Though, stupidly, any class that used to have good self-healing now generally sucks and all the classes that just got it are ridiculous.
Maybe it is the class.
I love my Spirit Wolves.

I write about video games and stuff. It is fun. Sometimes.
I certainly see a stinginess in unique weapon models. It seriously seems like there's maybe 3 or 4 total 2h sword models all the way through 5 mans.
As soon as you hit 84 go to twilight highlands and do crucible if you can. I am not sure if it is still a pain in the ass or not but the two hand sword you get out of there is very nice.
