Catan for XBLA: Coming in May!

For those unfamiliar, this game is based off the boardgame Settlers of Catan. Also, it rules.

Bonertastic? Oh yes. Or more appropriately:

Discuss. Personally, I like the clean, sexy look of the basic tileset over the fancy-pants tileset with sheep and crap.

    Oh snap.

Settlers is the shit. I'll definitely buy the hell out of this once I finally get a 360.

Is this out tomorrow? Isn't there a site that tells you what XBLA titles are coming out when?

Nope. And so far there has been no announcement for anything at all tomorrow unfortunately.

However, there was an announcement that implied that Catan would be one of the next 10 XBLA releases so we will hopefully see it in February or March.

As much as I love Settlers, I don't think I'll get this. I don't have enough friends with 360s to make it worth it, and I'd really rather play face-to-face. Announcing that I have wood for sheep just wouldn't be the same with some guy I'll never meet except over the internet.

Seriously, though, this is the awesomest news I've heard today. Especially after I realized that I left my copy of the actual board game at the convention I went to this weekend.

So is it just basic Settlers of Catan or are any of the expansions included?

Regular old Catan gets pretty dull after awhile compared to playing it with the expansions.

My friends and I played Settlers the board game all the time.

Any question that involved "wood" or the inquiry thereof would be followed by laughter.

    "Do you have any wood?"

I guess I can assume from these screenshots that the game has two display modes, one "board sim" and one "fancy pants". That's nice, but without the "roll value" chits being visible on the fancy pants version, wouldn't you have to remember them very, very well to plan where to place new towns?

It might be OK if you were using the default chit layout from the manual, but with a random board it would suck a bit. Plus the fancy board looks a bit useless anyway. Roads would be partly obscured by mountains and trees.

And why does the robber look like George Washington? I always imagined him to be a filthy knife-wielding thief.

I'm also wondering how trading will work. But I suppose if everyone has a headset, it will be fine.

But overall, it looks pretty damn nice. I'll probably grab it when I eventually get a 360 (hurry up 360 price-drop).

I've always wanted to play these kinds of board games, but I've never had the chance. I don't know too much about the specifics of the game, though. Is there much opportunity for the...well, typical Xbox Live type to ruin the game for others? I imagine this game won't attract the usual Xbox Live griefer types, but I'm still a bit concerned. Will there be a good chance of having an enjoyable game with a bunch of strangers?

At least the offering/trading interface will solve the problem we always have with trading.

Usually people aren't specific enough about their intentions for trading.

    It always goes like this:
Person A: "I want to trade wood".
Person B: "I've got heaps of wood!".
Person A: "No, I want to get rid of some wood. I want some Wheat or Sheep or something".
Person B: "Oh. That sucks then".

I know that people sometimes have trouble communicating, but do you guys honestly mistake "I want to trade wood" for "I want to trade for wood"?

Seems like a non-issue to me.

I rarely have problems when playing Settlers with friends, but when I'm playing with my relatives, it reaches "Who's on First" levels of miscommunication. For example, when my Father says "I want to trade Wood for Wheat" it could either mean that he is offering Wood or he is offering Wheat... he isn't consistent at all. My mother and grandmother are the same.

I try to convince them to say "I'm offering Wood for Wheat" instead, to be more specific. But they still revert to their ambiguous phrasing.

I figured that others might have this issue too... I guess not.

I would think playing on-line would kill my game. I haven't played much, but I seem to do well for myself through subtle non-verbal communication, ya know? Make player A ignore me because I helped him get mad at player B. (plus I like being able to see the size of the resource card stacks at the bank before playing Monopoly, but that's probably borderline evil.)

Damn. I'd never thought of that. Half the time I play the Monopoly card, I only get 2 or 3 resource cards. That is a brilliant (and evil) idea.
