Both Razorbacks; Predators have substantial turrets and are placed near the very front of the top hatch. They do not require side sponsons (though I'm sure most at least add the H bolters due to the low cost).

I added nine Marines and substantially tweaked the shape, size, and loadout of the Speeders, as well as added a hatch to the Rhinos. I just realized I didn't fill in the right sides of the Speeder's back fins, though. :/

EDIT: Still missing both Predator variants and the Vindicator.

First time I saw the game played, I was wondering why they made some of the hands so big. I thought it was a stylistic thing.

Well, not like 40k proportions aren't ridiculous to begin with.

Anyway, I'm going to sleep. I expect more awesome sprites come morning! :D

Reimann mentioned he may get a bit of the application done over the weekend, though I doubt it'll be in runnable shape any time in the immediate future yet. I'll try and keep you all updated.

Yeah, they do look even more 2nd Ed on the Marines than the Terminators. :P A recolor and slight repositioning ought to solve the problem.

How simple are we planning these sprite sets to be uploadable once the program is running? Is it a matter of just saving them in the proper size (30x30 for most) and plopping them into one of the program's folders? I doubt it requires anything further than an 'upload' command to utilize them, but I don't know enough about programming to be certain how customizable these will be after production.

    EDIT:
But a side-scrolling 40k game in the vain of Metal Slug... :D
I said months ago that we needed a Space Marine shoot-em-up that was a mix of Super Star Wars and TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, but with selectable weapons, massively destructible environments and some vehicle usage. This was before I was familiar with Metal Slug, which asides from the one-shot deaths and linear movement (I liked TMNT's healthbars, 2D floorspaces, and Super SW's extensive use of ladders and elevators) was exactly what I had in mind.

Forget this 40k MMO talk, I want to charge through waves of heretics with three other players and a plasma gun blazing, pumping Lascannon fire into a Carnifex boss, or powerfist-smashing Ork heads into the ground (or into the top of a Gargant head we spent the whole level climbing). Don't get me started on its potential for side-scrolling Space Hulk romps.

jam, those side-angled sprites are fucking fun. I like how they handled some of the weapons, the rocket launcher in particular. I'm definately taking notes.

I didn't get a chance to get much done today, lots of work and then spent some time at a buddy's house. I'm planning on finishing up the majority of the orks this weekend, though - I've already started on the Killa Kan, and have found a few trouble spots I'm hoping to correct.

My guess (and only my guess) is that the sprites would each be cropped out with transparent backgrounds, then individually named and zipped. The zip would also include an .XML file that would give a full army roster with a link (<icon>smarine_plasmarifle001.png</icon>, for example) to the appropriate sprite, so that you could import a full army set with correct stats and graphics for each type.

Of course, our resident code monkeys probably have something entirely different planned, but this is what I currently have envisioned.

If we can get someone to make a multitude of ~200-pixel tall animated character sprites and big levels I'd totally write up a detailed design document to begin work/revisions from. I've got a whole big image of capturing the feel of hard-hitting Space Marines. Engaging level designs on the other hand, I'd take input on doing those as mine tend to be boringly tidy and unartistically cookie-cutter.

Nice art style, I definitely want to keep it gritty and especially in tone of more recent 40k artwork (Paul Daiton and Karl Kopinski, maybe some Blanche for inspiration). I was thinking of greatly invoking TMNT IV for actual gameplay:
    300px-TMNTVideogameFoot.jpg
There'd certainly be influence from Metal Slug, Super SW and such, but it'd feature lots of charging into baddies and bashing the shit out of them. Only in our case it'd be with chainswords and bolters a-blazing. Oh god oh god and the blood...

That's pretty much it yeah. After the initial round of features I want to build a data synchronization feature where data and sprites can be distributed to players who don't have them in-game. In the meantime zips it is.

Finished up the Eldar cruisers and escorts.
    eclipse.pnghellebore.pngaconite.png
An Eclipse cruiser, a Hellebore frigate, and an Aconite frigate. Easy to do given that an Aconite is basically a half-sized Shadow, though I'm sure Gig can pretty these up a bit.

For fun, the Eldar fleet in formation.
    eldar.png

I assume that, for now, we're sticking to the main Gothic fleet lists and not branching out into the supplemental lists released later, 'cause if we do there's a shitload more Imperial ships to do, and about a hojillion Chaos ones. I'll probably try and kick together the Eldar battleship, the Void Stalker, even though it is an extra ship, on account of it is awesome.

What are the two new Rhino variants? Predator and one other I don't recognize due to the fact I'm not a marine player. Razorback? They look pretty good.

Also, I think I have to give the predator sponsons, right?

Edit: Shit, man. I'm only just realizing how much you've added. Those new sprites in the top left are awesome, as is the sword termie!

Which tanks/weapon options still need doing? Only one coming to mind right now is a Land Raider Crusader.

Hey Jam, you want me to whip up a Predator w/ variants for you? I'm getting bogged down with the Baneblade and would like a break. Plus I actually have a Predator model.

For now I think it's best to stick to the 4 (I think) main fleets from the rule book. The supplements have some cool shit (Planet Killer!), but getting the main game "pieces" finished should come first. However, I think we have plenty of time before a usable program comes out, so we should be able to move on to the supplement stuff before then.

Great job on the new ships, btw. The only thing that comes to mind that's potentially wrong is that the escort wings curve the other direction. I can fix that, though.

I'm a little apprehensive to do the 'Nids just yet. I love how you build the ships because they're basically parts from the 40k Tyranids. But there's a lot of curves and little details going on there. So we'll see.

Yeah, the Hellebore and Hemlock both have the Pulsar Lance mounted on the front. The Hemlock is especially sweet because it's cheap, but you only get that one gun. But it's cheap, so you take like 3-4 and blow the hell out of anyone in range.

The pulsar is a sick weapon, too. Hits on a 4+ and for every hit you score, you get to roll for another hit up to 3 total.

Also, you must be a fan of the Planet Killer.

Gig, you would be ASTONISHED what those little Eldar fuckers can do. I used to play Imperial Navy against them, and they're so damn fast that it's a game in and of itself just getting them into range, let alone fire arc. They also pack a metric shit ton of firepower for such a small ship; those escorts are full to the brim with weapons. Their holofields make lances basically pointless.

The upshot? You get 'em in range and arc of a good weapon battery volley and they absolutely crumble. Hit like a cruise missile, take hits like a paper room divider.

Fuckin' Eldar. Bad ass work on their ships, though; I can hardly wait to try 'em out. How's the coding coming, out of curiosity?

I saw they had that extra move/turn. I can imagine that being a pain in the ass. Don't blast markers ignore the holofield? If you can get a bead on a ship, you can probably cause quite a bit of damage. Or at least slow them down..

And if you mean XML coding, I haven't done too much outside the initial "structure". Now it's going to be all copy/paste/change stats. Rinse, repeat.

I don't know about the coding for the actual sandbox, though..
Maybe Reimann will give us an update.

I believe blast markers ignore holofields, yeah. You're right that you can cause a lot of damage if you can get a clean shot, but, well, good luck.

Eldar are also weird because they move faster depending on their orientation with regards to the sun. So if you can make them maneuver with the sun either in front of or behind them, you can slow them down. They're a very unique fleet that take a lot of skill to fight with the cumbersome Imperial ships.

Hey everyone. I can't believe this is already up to 20 pages!

So, here is how the code is coming along: Just barely started. Ein had the amazing luck to get in touch with me about this project during a week when a major project was due at work. It was a pretty hectic couple days there. Anyway, I'm making some good progress today.

However, mostly what I am working on at the moment are boring but necessary bits like XML parsing, storing and retrieving style info (fonts , colors etc..) interfaces for UI components and such.

I must say the overwhelming outpouring of support in this thread has got me really psyched about this project. I am really blown away by the quantity and quality of all the artwork. But, as the OP stated, its going to be quite a bit of work to get this going. I am hoping to have something to show you by the end of the weekend but its hard to be sure.
