What I'm gonna do tonight is redo the guardian with the ratlings as a base, becasue they look about the right size. It should make it a bit eaiser.

Still got lots of work to do on him, and haven't added any "paint" to the model yet, but this is sort of my test for the WarBoss, next to the Boyz for comparison.

    mekboss_1.pngboyz_test1.png

    Thoughts?
I like the bulk of the Warboss, and the general shape of him, but he looks too bright and shiny for an Ork. Unless that's part of what you meant by lacking "paint," in which case I'll shut up now.

Yeah, I'll be adding lots of wear to him soon enough, and will try out a couple different color schemes of paint (chipped red or yellow, with the obligatory checker patterned stripes, things of that nature) at the same time. I'm still unsure of the bulk, though - he's set up as a 48x48 sprite, but he seems a little small compared to the rest, in my opinion. I don't have a model to base him off of in comparison to the others, though, so it is all subjective.

Hahah, Rank, we don't allow you to play with half painted models here.

(it kinda looks like pewter :P)

Also, I want to help code.

I'm in my final semester for a BA in Comp Sci. I honestly don't know how much I can help, but I want to help. I've coded in a lot of languages, but most of my projects haven't gotten THAT advanced, so I'll have to try to learn as much as I can as I go.... I may be pretty useless for the first little while. But I can learn.

PM me if you think I can help. :)

After work I'll start working on the Imperial fleet. I already sketched a couple ships out (from memory), and it definetly should be a bit easier than a guardsman or something.

I think I'll start with Imperial and then move to Chaos, as those two fleets are the most balanced from what I can remember.

Expect at least a cruiser and an escort ship sometime this evening.

Also, someone should start Necrons for 40k, as I suspect the entire army could be finished quickly, what with the relatively small number of units they have.

PS - timspork, those guard are hella sexy.

I was goofing around after you mentioned a BFG version of this and remembered that there are some top down silhouette of some BFG ships in the manual. The manuals are available as a pdf from GW. Print Screen and copy/paste you got yourself some beginning BFG ships.
I dig the ratlings, but the commissar's hats look a little funny. I think they're too perfectly square; maybe round out the back a little bit and make the brim more pronounced in front?

Roger that, I'll fix it. It looks weird to me too but I was trying to add red trim to the hat ala the model.

Funny you should mention that. When I was thinking about it this morning, I actually went searching for the rule book, just to be sure it was still free. Sure enough, there was the top down view right towards the begining.

There's also some good reference pictures on GW's BFG site, in the modeling section. It's basically just pictures of how to assemble the models, but it should help with proportions.

    Request for artwork

All these sprites you guys are making just rock. Awesome work. It would be really handy if someone could crank out a few dice. Probably 25 or 30 pixel PNGs (whichever looks better, might need 30 to show a d20) of dice with different facings showing. D6 are the most important of course but other dice would be handy as well.

There is no rush on this as the dice bag is several iterations in but it would be good to get started.

    (damn, just can't stay away!)

The chipped paint one is fucking awesome, and I approve heartily. I'm really impressed with what you squeezed out of that space.

I did, however, like the older gun version better - the one that looked like a big shoota, rather than a gattling cannon.

Still, glorious. The only thing I'm worried about is the art style differences in shading - I'd probably try and replicate the way you've done it on the SM stuff, but I'm not sure I can.

Artists and contributors to the model packages might want to read a bit about XML, as that what the data files will be using. Its quite simple when you get used to it and all you need is notepad. w3schools has some good tutorials here: http://www.w3schools.com/xml/default.asp

For those who might be interested in contributing on the code side of things, nearly everything except the network code will be in Actionscript 3. Here are some links on the subject:

The preview of Flash 9 can be found here:
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flash9as3preview/

A good introduction to AS3 can be found here (good idea to read or skim
    the entire tree):
    http://livedocs.macromedia.com/labs/as3preview/docs/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm

    The language reference is here:

    The adobe forum is here:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/categories.cfm?forumid=72&catid=612&entercat=y

    edit: fixed the links.

Guns are easy enough to switch in and out. I'm actually glad I used that one, since it forced me to make that arm one pixel wider, which made a bigger difference than I expected. I'll be doing arm/weapon swaps later today, but I gotta go back to work (on lunch break), and I've got a meeting for the next couple hours.

Thanks for the kind words, though. Means a lot.

Yeah, but the first one I did came out so puny. I know what you mean, though, but not sure how to fix it.

Anyway, here's a Warboss without the heavy armor and such. No weapons equipped yet. Placed next to a MekBoss and a couple Boyz for size comparison.

It is good, but if we don't make them more pointy-hatted, I can see it being difficult to distinguish between Eldar infantry and Tau infantry by anything other than colours.

So I'd say something a bit more pointy. Maybe I'll have a crack at seeing if I can adjust it.
