My aunts and grandma think gays are kind of cute too, but only if they are twinks, and only if they do not marry, which is stupid.

I try to get through to people, make them realize that someone doesn't choose to be gay, that there isn't anything wrong with it, that most people have no more choice of their orientation than they do of their skin color, but it is frustrating.

Twink is a term applied to gay men with certain visual characteristics and mannerisms. Usually a bit more petite, a bit more flamboyant. [edit] effeminate is a better term

My extended family must be frustrated because they've suspected I'm lesbian and because they are so sure one of my cousins is too. The girl is def straight, she's had boyfriends . . . she just hasn't told her parents because she isn't supposed to have any.

that most people have no more choice of their orientation than they do of their skin color, but it is frustrating.

Actually I don't believe this is true scientifically. There are genetic factors that can lead to particular behaviors but to compare it directly to race or skin color is not accurate.

It's funny because I usually have to stop myself from glancing at him because he's pretty cute (also sets off my gaydar). I was walking to the bathroom and passed him leaning on the wall, which was kind of awkward. Anyway when I reached the door, I turned around and I caught him looking at my butt. Then my face and our eyes met for like half a second before I quickly turned away and blushed.

    So emotionally repressed

Thing is you always have to boil it down to genetics because the people arguing that it's a choice don't understand that there IS such a thing as unavoidable environmental factors that shape your personality and change you in ways you can't predict or choose.

In a way it's closer to arguing that you can choose your favorite ice cream flavor.

I don't know the science of it, and I don't have a problem with people who are bi either. I just think people should be able to do what they want, as long as it doesn't stop other people from doing the same. Homophobes who use their proselytizing religion to bend weak-willed individuals to their cause are despicable.

Perhaps but I think you're missing another crucial point. If there is any choice involved it's their choice and their right be who they want to be.

Well yeah that's an entire other question. People who bring up the choice issue tend to just assume that if it's a choice it's wrong and wipe their hands with it. It's us who are then stuck with arguing a second layer of morality that is probably completely irrelevant to us. If a guy can choose to love dick and wants to do it, they can go right ahead. They even totally have my permission to want me. I'll be politely flattered.

    right

of course expression of sexuality isn't the point

race and sex have an essential commonality, which is that it isn't chosen

logical comparisons between the two are valid so long as the premise relies only on the commonality

Scientific research has shown sexuality can be chosen as well as affected by social environment. Two things that cannot effect race.

Lets pretend I used the word ethnicity instead then. Ethnicity cannot be effected over time by your environment. If it could there wouldn't be those 10 black dudes in Canada.
Scientific research has shown sexual preference can be chosen?

    Really?

There are a combination of many factors that lead to sexual preference and as I understand it choice isn't completely ruled out. It's not always a factor but it can be.
