Oh god. Was playing yesterday, looked at the clock 10 PM. 'Oh okay, I can play for another hour...' Looked at the clock again after getting destroyed by some angry villagers with loads of rifles, coming back with 70 very angry mercs and supporting my chosen country's king. 'Oh shit, 2:30 AM...'
Also note: the "Complete Pack" or whatever is bullshit as you don't need anything except Warband, and perhaps the new Mount and Gun pay-mod which most people don't seem to care for as much as the free mods.

I don't understand the super hate for Fire and Sword. It adds in tons of cool features and isn't buggy as all fuck like every mod. Also multiplayer fights don't revolve around mashing mouse 1 while you cover yourself in a million shields.
Now that I'm getting into a good groove, I find myself liking F&S more. Only thing I really miss is horse archery and heavy knights.
Anyone have any idea what these "Story missions" are supposed to be? I helped out the village at the start, and then a while later I went back to the guy from the tutorial and he told me to visit a muscovite noble, who had me raid 3 polish villages. I haven't been able to find anything else. Do I just pick a kingdom and join up or what?
Man, I decided to help defend Dihirim in my Blood and Steel game. Pretty much every lord from both sides, the fight numbers about 5k total troops. I fell after maybe ten minutes at most, so I changed out a load of laundry, made some sandwiches, eat said sandwiches, and stumbled a few hundred times.

Hehe, yeah hang tough. I participated in a similar war, tons and tons of important dudes, didn't last all the way through. I wound up with, like, six captured lords and made bank ransoming them.
blood and steel is good fun for murdering hundreds of men by yourself, at least thats what I did with the barbarian start, every battle i would just be drenched from head to feet in blood, it was metal.
So, caravans break with fire and sword. If you sell something to a goods vendor, you can send a full caravan of it to anywhere else. So simply save up about 4k thelars, and find two nearby cities with a price difference of about 150. I think I was using Kursk and Tula, selling iron at about 200 profit each, with 40 each caravan. Once you get around 15-20k, switch to velvet and do long runs. It generally sells cheap in the south east, and high in the northwest. I was doing runs around belatyn castle to novogrod, making 69k gross at about 42k profit. You can do this endlessly, because after you choose to send the caravan, you can re-buy the velvet or whatever good. Prices also remain fixed, or at least very close.
Went from about 3k after maybe 8 hours or more of playing, to 150k in one extra hour, and most of that was searching for good markets and then for velvet, which seemed impossible to find for a while. It feels like cheating, as it's basically infinite money, but I got sick of having shit gear and shit troops who cant even level, you know?

Sich to Vyborg is an amazing trade route for velvet, just so you know.
On a related note, upgrading your troops to all have the best possible weapons and armour is crazy. It makes them almost literally unstoppable.
Ugh, I need some help. I seem to have found a button that turns off all the messages in the game (damage, orders, exp, etc).
Google has failed me, anyone know what key I'm looking for? This is in Warband if it makes a difference.
Are you using a mod? I know in my Blood and Steel games, if I bring up the tactcal menu in a fight, there's about a 90 percent chance it causes messages to not show. Save and restart fixes it for me.
If its not that, check the options to make sure they're still checkmarked.
If you're in the middle of a fight or somewhere you can't/don't want to save and restart, you can bring up the recent messages tab and they'll still show there.
PoP for warband is being a piece of shit and crashing constantly with runtime errors and complaints of missing files
when I first try to install it, it says I have warband 1.124 installed instead of 1.134 and blah blah blah, but I definitely don't since a) I have it on steam and b) the launcher says '1.134'
I realised I had vanilla M&B installed non-steamily and got rid of that but it didn't fix anything
you have to download a copy from MnB's site and install it, non-steam, in order for some mods to work. Steam will have a CD Key you can copy and give them and that will allow you to download it from MnB's site.

It's not that because I've played a ton of PoP on my Steam copy of Warband (the only copy I have). Make sure you're using the latest version of the mod. I also got the warning about the version, but I just installed anyway and haven't had any problems.

I got the steam version of warband and jumped immediately into PoP. I got a message from the PoP installer that it couldn't detect my version of warband, but I think that's just because of steam and it doesn't actually affect anything (it's still the right version). I was having a ton of problems running the game (crashes 5-20min in, bunch of different types of errors), but they were all fixed by the memory fix here, which is apparently necessary for a lot of computers, for a lot of the popular mods.
Also, PoP is awesome, but it gets a little stale once you have more than a handful of Hero Adventurers following you around. Are there any other good mods with a lot of unit variety but no 'god-mode' troops, maybe?

it may not be consistent between computers and operating systems. in my case, I had severe problems until I installed it locally (non-steam), at which point they went away.
The other likely culprit, however, is your video settings. Go to the options from the MnB launcher, and there are a few things you set -- change DirectX 9 to DirectX 7, set it to load textures on demand, and then when you get into the game proper, reduce or remove shadows, ragdolls and corpses.
Giant Bomb quick looks at PC games are usually a mixture of "how willfully ignorant can we be" and "how badly can we misapply the very few thing we've managed to learn about the game." They're funny though!

They actually mentioned this once, I think they were playing Gran Turismo (initiate paraphrasing):
"Aw man, I'm doing pretty terrible here... and there's probably people watching this who just are totally pissed at how bad I am, right?"
"Oh yeah, every Gran Turismo fan in the world hates you right now. They're screaming at their monitors 'NO! DO THE THI- AHHHH!!!"
To be fair, it's goddamn Mount and Blade. It's willfully obtuse, doesn't bother to explain anything to you, and is balls difficult if you don't know what to do.
also what was that thing about the salt in PoP? something about a training field? And what's a rough description of what I should be aiming to do here? At the moment I'm just doing what I normally do with warband (a few quests for lords of places I like, going towards getting that mercenary contract thing then building up a good army and seceding to make my own empire)

Yeah, I guess something clicked.

The slower combat is great.
I never asked for this!

most embarrassing moment: being led by a couple of muskateers into a windy maze of waist-high fences in a small village, and then being shot to death
The battle is still going.

oh man, that guy is terrible
Well it's Giant Bomb and this is a PC game, so it's to be expected.

I've never found it hard.
Well, I mean, there's "getting hunted down by lords with 400 dudes" hard, but not "omg what am I supposed to do" hard.
