Shoot him in the foot twice as he is running up, then hold your dagger ready to pierce until he moves his shield to swing.
One on one is super easy as long as you get in position first, since the dagger is faster and they will usually hold their shield up when they think they are about to get hit.

They released a pretty big patch for With Fire and Sword yesterday, adding a lot of balancing things, the ability to make actual line formations and order your musket lines to fire (think platoon firing in Empire: Total War if you've ever played that), fixed some bugs, brought item prices down to a sane amount, etc. The best part of this is the ability to order your soldiers into ranks. Example: I ordered my musketeers to form up, 3 deep. they did so and I ordered them to fire on my command. Enemy cavalry were charging at us head on and they had their muskets lined up, and just before the cavalry hit I told them to "FIRE NOW!" and they all let loose at once, completely devastating the charge. The new physics/particle effects/sounds they put in for bullets really add to the fun and immersion, as well.
Oh, and this.
Characters can now crouch. The default key is 'z'.
figured out how to really cheese things up in PoP for warband: One of my vassals now has a 2000 unit army. Method: Find a Jatu/Vanskerry/whatever army with a heap of prisoners, fight them with one of your vassals helping out. All of their prisoners that you don't pick up go to your vassal, and they don't have any upper limit on army size that I can tell. He has 100 relations with me and is now my marshal, which should make my "go to a random castle that only needs ladders and doesn't have too many people and take it as quick as possible" tactics work even better
The latest patches have made With Fire And Sword a lot better. You can recruit troops from villages now (only up to a certain cap, though, sadly, but it's enough to get you started)!

I almost bit on the sale price for Mount&Gun, but ended up spending $25 on other stuff. I don't really want it at this point, so I can wait.
Got my achievement for Warband, though! If you're having trouble getting it to drop, try resting for a few days. Worked for me.
I tried resting for a month, then tried chipped great swords and such as well as normal great swords, then started a new game and did the same, and still fucking nothing. Kind of annoying.
So I picked up Warband in the steam sale. Looks fun!
Can someone recommend a mod to me? I'm basically looking for a graphics overhaul, and anything adding to the idea of the core game is also great - I've not played before so I'd like to play the game "as intended", so no Elves and such. Unless they're in the base game. No clue.
Thanks!

Prophesy of Pendor is great, but it's elves and it changes the game and item balance substantially. It essentially takes the gritty M&B feel into slightly higher fantasy thematically, and much higher fantasy statistically.
'The Eagle and Radiant Cross' and 'Blood and Steel' are both talked up, though I play PoP so I can't speak for them personally. I want to try TEaRC just based on what people say though.

I would probably play a bit of vanilla first to get the core gameplay down. I don't know of any graphical mods offhand, but I think the game looks great as is.
Yeah, it's no Crysis, but when you got 200 dudes fighting in the field it still looks cool.
Edit: Also, Blood and Steel looks like a complete overhaul with undead hordes and shit. TEatRC looks cool. I've been looking for something that was basically PoP without the high fantasy.
I highly recommend you play vanilla a while first, though, since the learning curve is steep enough as is.

Blood and Steel is a complete overhaul without any super fantasy elements, there's female pistol mercs and female barbarian mercs and such, but no zombies or anything like that. Probably my favorite mod at the moment

Blood and Steel is fucking hard, depending on your heroes' career. So keep that in mind. However, all BnS does is expand on the vanilla gameplay to make it better (And harder. Did I mention it's harder?). It pretty much fast-tracks you into large-scale army fighting, too.
If you set it to the highest difficulty, and enable it, at day 100 or so, the old "black knights" from early on in Mount and Blade's development also show up in the form of a crusade to try and stamp out all life in the game, too. There are no undead, or anything like that, it's just an old developmental easter egg.
To give you some perspective on BnS, it basically looks at Vanilla Warband, says, "Nope, this shit is too pansy for my liking.", and proceeds to amp everything up to death metal album cover levels.
I mean goddamn, the game starts you out fighting groups of 60ish looters. By the time your twenty or so troops get done slaughtering them, you'll probably be covered in gore. That is assuming you are a hard enough individual to take on 60 enemies and come out on top.
Don't get me started on some of the starting careers, like Peasant Revolutionary. Set it to Mommy mode if you want to experience real horror.
How is The Eagle and Radiant Cross nowadays?

If you want an enhancement of the base game with no bullshit (read: Prophecy of Pendor has a bunch of bullshit, Blood and Steel is a lot of bullshit, etc) then get the Floris Mod Pack. It adds a ton of stuff, including graphical improvements, tactical stuff, diplomacy, etc, and really rounds out and improves the game without adding ridiculous junk.
IE: Blood and Steel's idea of making a game good is "JUST ADD TONS OF SOLDIERS" and Prophecy of Pendor is "MAKE EVERYTHING HAVE 100 HP" and "ADD MORE ELVES"

Not sure how friendly this game would be to making it a completely different setting, but does it not cry out for some sort of star wars mod? Maybe siths trying to control a planet, raising armies of droids etc? No? In any case the vanilla game is awesome, will get as far as I can and then try some mods.

Yeah, there's one, and it even added starship combat, I believe.
The warband mod I've been using, "Scaedumar" (really great! Vanilla but prettier and with more features in the vien of diplomacy) has randomly stopped working, so now I'm looking for a replacement mod. Floris maybe?
What I'm planning on doing is to make an LP-ish thing where I record myself playing on super-realistic mode on a new character, and see how far I get before dying - this 'you've been taken prisoner' thing is nonsense and I'm going to treat it like the death of my character. Could be really fun/tense, could be really short and stupid, we'll see.
Anyways, I think maybe a non-vanilla world that I've never played might work well for this. Any recommendations? Don't think I want elves and 100hp doods, but I've never played PoP so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Preferably the prettier looking the better.
I'm playing Warband, and I can do the first quest that they give you after you make a character, but once I finish I get lost and can't find any more quests to do. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Or any direction? :P

Pick a faction to side with, then start going from castle to castle, city to city, talking with their lords and asking if they have any tasks for you to do. Also check in taverns for Farmers, and check in villages for those infested with bandits. Also while traveling around, beat up on smaller bandit parties to level up your dudes and get loot to sell.
Also, while in cities, check for tournaments to participate in.
So I picked up Warband in the steam sale. Looks fun!

Floris updates the environment textures, adds new items, and alters the combat animations. The last one seems like it tightens up combat too since swings are shorter. I started playing with it last night and melee feels faster.
It also adds other stuff but it's still the base game world (albeit with more unit types).
The only downside I've read about is that it winds up creating ridiculously large garrisons compared to native and later siege battles become tedious affairs.

I was in a siege of a few thousand on each side, it took about 1.5 to 2 hours to finish.

Related question but for later in the game:
Where do you go after you've become a vassal and added a town/castle to your holdings? Since I'm pumping up killing power instead of charisma/leadership, I don't have a massive army to take any holding I want but the marshal of the realm is retarded and leads campaigns back and forth as he tries to siege something in Vaegir lands while Rhodoks keep doing half assed sieges on their old holdings. My own holdings are in that area and I've lost a city due to being the only one there to defend against a campaign force.
In vanilla Warband, at the beginning, a ~400 soldier garrison of mostly mid-level troops and a 10 tactics companion should be able to hold against the army of any faction as long as you fight in it yourself.
Try to build relations with lords, so you can instruct them to travel to your city and help you defend it. Just talk to a lord and there will be an option to "suggest a course of action."

They don't have to all be good troops. You just need the battle advantage. Like, a third of the garrison should be recruits and tier 1 archers, a third mid to high level archers, a sixth mid tier melee and a sixth max tier melee. Put all of the max tier melee into your own party so that they're more likely to spawn.
Also, if you're having trouble with party size, try increasing your renown by fighting in tournaments and fighting large bandit groups by yourself (you should be able to handle 20-30 bandits solo).

You can also get decent renown by leeching off of battles being fought by allied lords. Just find a battle that's obviously going to be won by your side, jump in, and claim your share of the glory.

It's a nice touch.
It's even better when next time you meet them, and they say that, is when you're actually turning on them for some other cause or your own ends.
1. If you enjoy the single player experience, Prophesy of Pendor is literally the best single player M&B mod in existence. Everything about it. Get it now.
2. However, it is a fair bit harder than vanilla mount and blade. So I'm going to repost my Guide To Getting Started in PoP.
Am I missing something big? Because I always start the game, finish the tutorial, wander around with 20 or so peasents and get smushed by death cultists or bandits (playing PoP).
Ansen should be your priority #1 companion. Pump nothing but his intelligence, put him at the bottom of your list, and train him in all the doctor skills. Having a party memeber with 6+ surgery will make your life so much easier. Luckily Ansen works with either of the bigger groups.
I personally go with Group #1, because Sir Roland and Donovan are badasses with good party skills.
Don't refer to anything else on that wiki, it's for PoP 2.0, so most of it is outdated. The companion bubble hasn't changed, though.
As for troops, you can read an (updated) overview of each culture, their troop tree, and a tactical analysis of their troops here.
You will need to get into the trading thing in order to make money early on. Don't expect to win a single tournament until level 15 or so, and this is assuming you put a lot of points in str/agi and associated skills.
The best way to get a start, IMO:
1. Get some recruits. Train them at the training fields by sparring with them.
2. Pick who you want to start out being buddies with. Hang out in their territory, learning how their cities' trade works (what they sell cheaply, what they buy for a lot. For example, in my game, I can buy Iron dirt cheap at Senderfall, cruise over to Ravenstern, and instantly double my investment). Whenever you see one of their lords fighting, join the battle on their side and let them do the heavy lifting. Do quests for the lords to gain reputation with them.
3. Sign on as a mercenary (not a vassal) ASAP. This will completely pay for your troops and then some, unless you're rocking a bunch of elite units. Now you go companion hunting as you level up. You want to get at least 4-5, more if you can afford them. Until you hit level 10 or so, you should still only be joining battles with someone else. Fighting on your own is generally not a good idea.
4. Don't even think of starting your own kingdom until you're like level 20 and can field 150+ strong troops. Pendor's politics are cruel.
If you're having a lot of trouble getting started, here is a secret that could pretty much be considered a cheat:
If you buy one unit of Salt, and go to any training field, talk to the trainer, and select "Tell Me About Pendor", the salt will be removed from your inventory. You will also gain 20 Noldor troops and 5 Knights. Probably not a good idea to use this too early in the game if you're going to use it, it will eat up all your money in wages.
Also, keep in mind that doing this will remove all Training Grounds from the map.
Prophesy of Pendor is meant to start a lot slower than Native. You have to work your way up to fighting those Heretic armies. You really have to get used to running from fights and helping out other people until you're strong enough to stand on your own.
