Word 2010 Behavior Change (multilevel lists)

So it used to be I could type "I. Lorem Ipsum" and it would auto format to a multilevel list. Then when I hit TAB my line would progress to the next level (if I hit it before typing). NOW- it auto corrects it to a regular list, and if I hit tab, (even after selecting multi-level list) it does not change my list level. WHAT the HECK is going on?!? How can it just change how it works like this?
